Strike Likely at City of Prince George

Tuesday, January 7, 2014 @ 5:00 AM

Prince George, B.C.-  The City of Prince George could be about 5  hours away from a strike by CUPE locals 1048 and 399.

The two  locals, 1048 and 399 have been without a contract since  December 31, 2012. They  presented a  proposal  to the City's labour lawyer and the City is to advise today if  it will  accept or  reject the  plan.  Unless there is a major surprise,  it is unlikely the city will  accept anything that doesn't support its net zero  position.  While details of the union proposal have not been released,  it is our understanding  the proposal does not support a net zero position.

Inside and outside workers are prepared to  hit the picket lines.  Unlike the one day strike action  that happened in early December,  it won’t be  an action that will be held on a Saturday, so as to minimize disruption, it is expected to be wide spread, and immediate.

Among the services deemed essential  under the interim  order  from the Labour Relations Board prior to the December 14th action:

  • Snow removal, ( but not maintenance, ie widening the roadway)
  • Police  and Fire services, ( but not some clerical staff)
  • Wastewater treatement
  • Water pumping stations ( Fish Trap Island for example)

But, you can  expect to have to haul your garbage to the Foothills Landfill yourself as garbage  pick up is NOT considered essential.

City Hall  inside workers will be off the job.

In addition to a negative impact on  a number of City services, there are a number of  events that could be negatively impacted by strike action.  Depending on how long it  lasts, job action could negatively impact  several events scheduled in the City for January including:

-Cougars and Spruce Kings games  at their respective arenas

-completion of the Kin Centre upgrades

-Hockey Day in Canada  ( January 18th)

-Premier’s Natural Resource Forum ( Jan. 22nd and 23rd)at the   Civic Centre,

-Bridal Expo at the Civic Centre on the 26th

-The Band Perry concert at the CN Centre  on the 11th.

It is known  some of the City Councillors will not cross a picket line, so  committee work and  the next  City Council meeting   could be in jeopardy as well.

Wow! Yet again when the roads are like 4×4 tracks. Can’t even stay in the ruts cause then u hit the bottom of your car. And to expect people to take their garbage to the landfill? Are they going to let us use the trucks that OUR. Tax dollars bought to get this done? Are they going to give each house in PG $6 so we can even get in the foothills landfill? Maybe they (city) could afford a deal if they weren’t buggering off to China (a place that doesn’t have human rights) twice a year. How good does it look to other communities that the Spruce Kings and Cougars play when games are cancelled cause out city hall can’t get their act together, not to mention acts like The Band Perry. Why would any top name acts come here anymore when stuff like this happens. BOTH sides should stop being headstrong and do what is best for the community they “say” the care about. C’mon Man!

There again, counter proposal made by the Union and mayor has her head up her XXX.She has no clue or seems to care less about the effects on the City or people. She wanted a fight from the start and unless Council steps in writing is on the wall.

Last time the garbage service was disrupted a mountain of garbage bags ended up on the lawn of city hall! May history repeat itself.

“Snow removal, ( but not maintenance, ie widening the roadway)”

So a 4 lane road is plowed with a windrow in the center and 1.5 lanes on both sides, or 2 on one and 1.5 on the other.

Can someone tell me how one can widen a road without removing the snow from the portion by which the road will be made wider – that means widened to the design standard of the road.

These people are really ALL idiots!!!!

“But, you can expect to have to haul your garbage to the Foothills Landfill yourself as garbage pick up is NOT considered essential.”

It is winter. The garbage will freeze or stay cool.

I have capacity in my SMALL bin to put accumulated garbage back in over a period of a few weeks after the strike is over. If it is not over by the first 15+C heat wave in August, I will have to rethink that strategy …. ;-)

BTW, what are those who will be taking their garbage going to be doing there?

Will that be manned by Beth James or her designate who can take the $6?

Ya let the union use a bully system against the people of PG.. I think there should be bullying classes in school,,give the kids an even playing field.. it seems to be the way things get done. Bully on folks, Bully on. I dont see how we expect our kids not to be a bully in school, when all they see is how it works in real life.

get these clowns out of here. Ive lived in this town my entire life and there has never been a more useless bunch of city council.

So the Mayor, her Sherriff, and the hired gun have decided to call the Unions hand when it comes to Strike action. Although this is not at all what the City workers want to do, City Administration has publicly belittled and slandered them to this point. The Net Zero mandate is a farce. It applies nowhere else except at the negotiation table. Let the gunfight begin. Should be entertaining.

Sorry for the double post.

I can see how wars start …….

Humans are such an amazing race. Still not that far removed from animals.

I believe the dump is ran the regional district so there will be no city people at the gate.

Dan was doing a not so bad job after all…she still in China??

I see a lot of business dumpsters in the city filling up real quick during the night. City hall probably has a dumpster, everyone should put their garbage in it if they strike. If snow removal is deemed an essential service then maybe we will finally get our street plowed this winter.

How can members of council not cross the picket line? Do they not know they are part of management? Council members better realize they are required to do the job they are paid to do no matter if they have to cross a picket line.

I think it is a bit hypocritical for council to try and be sympathetic to those on the picket lines when council is directly responsible for the labour dispute. If they feel otherwise it would be nice to hear from them. The silence from members of council is deafening.

I already paid my utilities, if they don’t collect my garbage do I get a 6 dollar credit?

The mayor and current council have done nothing but harm the residents of Prince George, whether it’s raising taxes, unities , parking fees, raising user fees, rental property licenses, the list goes on and on. Plus hundred of thousands on a core review that is useless, wanting to hire public relations, traveling to China to twin, and one of our councillor’s not paying his taxes. Let’s not forget Haldi road dispute, again the list goes on.
It doesn’t seem to matter what we the tax payers say, if we don’t like it we can move according to the mayors recent comments in The Prince George citizen, we’ll I’ve heard of people actually doing that, because of her.
Now we will be faced with a strike by the city employees, the recent poll on this site supports the union workers. I think it’s good they are standing up to the biggest bully in the history of our city. Mayor Green you are a disgrace.

gus: “I can see how wars start ……. “

Nailed it.

Gotta save a buck or 2 …after all 40 Million on this new cop shop..and trips to timbucktoo….

They never picked up the garbage on my road Dec. 13 because the truck driver knew he would get stuck. So I had to take it to the dump because it was full to the brim and have nowhere to store it. I called the city to see if they would reimburse me the 6 dollars since I already paid the city to pick my garbage up but no they don’t do that. Maybe during a strike they will pay? I am going to keep my dumping receipts just in case the city decides they should cover this during a strike.

I find it quite hypocritical that we have a city council and Mayor along with the Christy Clark wannabe city manager, can sit idly by and waste good money on such political white elephants such as IPG and trips to China, yet deny tax paying workers (property, income, etc) a reasonable wage increase. This symphony of ridiculousness is amplified tenfold when so much money and effort is spent by this mayor to ensure that more dollars flow from this city via Chinese investments.

I have heard that our honorable mayor is seeking a MP nomination and sources tell me that she has as good a shot as anyone in receiving said nomination. It reminds me of a saying that goes around coaching circles, you are passing the trash, which basically means that you are passing along a horrible coach to another association just to get rid of them. Ottawa, we give you the best trash we have, Mayor Shari Green

Isee your in full election mode Gus, guess you will take another swing a being an alderman this year at election time.

Yor post are long and boring.
Cheers

Imo,I guess it’s time to get the burning barrels out, we payed for garbage collection. If it’s not picked up burn it.

This Mayor and that Joke of a City manager Beth James have WANTED this to happen from day one!! I wish the worker’s the best and hope that some Ego’s from the 5th floor can see past themselves.

Perhaps some of the people who post here, and support the Union demands could explain at what point do we say enough is enough. 2 years, 5 years 10 years. When do we stop giving increases??

As far as I’m concerned the City Administration, Unions, Police, Fireman et al, are extremely well paid, with good benefits, and its time they just do their jobs. A five year pay freeze for all of them would not be out of line.

Having said that, let the chips fall where they may. If they go on strike so be it. We can keep our garbage, or take it to the land fill, or give it to the City for safekeeping in their front yard. Any other services (other than essential) can go on hold for as long as it takes.

Whatever the Unions ultimately settle for, Management should get significantly less.

Seems the payroll department is considered an essential service. Whoda thunk it.

“As far as I’m concerned the City Administration, Unions, Police, Fireman et al, are extremely well paid, with good benefits, and its time they just do their jobs. A five year pay freeze for all of them would not be out of line.”

Unions…plural, Police (salaries paid by the federal government) et al??! What an amazingly articulate vague rambling lol

Your simple minded approach of EVERYONES paid to much and FREEZE all wages is why your posts are so laughable. Next time your house is on Fire ask the guys running INTO it to risk their lives for 20$ an hour. You PALOPU are whats wrong with this city! “Its time they just do their jobs”…..hummm, seems like they are. We do actually agree on 1 thing though….”Whatever the Unions ultimately settle for, Management should get significantly less.” AGREED….now go enjoy your retirement Pal.

Prior to the Christmas breaks, the Unions were stating that their strike was about respect for the workers. It wasn’t about the money!

So, is the pending strike about respect, or is it about money?

As far as I’m concerned, it’s always been about the money. It always is!! The Unions held a 1 day strike on a Saturday, when most of their members already had the day off. They returned to work so that their members would be eligible to receive Stat Pay for the holidays. Now that Christmas and New Years is behind us, the Unions are going to go back on strike!

Now a recent CBC news story states “Gary Campbell, president of CUPE 399, says his members are prepared to walk out Tuesday if the city does not bargain with them. He says it all comes down to money.”

Isn’t this exactly what many speculated would happen?

CrysBaron, do some research before posting. 1. Police are not paid by the Feds nor do they belong to a union. 2. Firepersons no longer “run” into a burning building. 3. Firepersons (& Police) make far more than $20/hr.
As for City personell doing their jobs? I don’t know who is responsible but it is probably a combination of all involved, I have never seen in 40+ years our city streets in such a deploreable condition. If we are hosting the Nation next February & our streets look like they do now, we will be the laughing stock of Canada.

These city workers are a joke, very well paid compared to other jobs in the city for what they do and no education or training. People spend months and countless hours organizing events around this city to only have them potentially cancelled by these idiots. Only more reason to give them the finger next time they try to give me a parking ticket or I’m driving by them on the street!

Thats pretty ludicrous coming from a pgpulp worker don’t you think?

“CrysBaron, do some research before posting. 1. Police are not paid by the Feds”

??? no way your this moronic! Just WHO do you think pays the RCMP salarys? they are paid by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT as they are FEDERAL GOVERNMENT employees, and no where did I suggest they were in a Union?! Trust me when I say it’s YOU that needs to start doing YOUR homework (As given your comments your 12) if you think the Royal Canadian mounted Police are NOT paid by the feds. Apparently your unable to read a paragraph line by line as I suggested that you WOULD NOT Get a Firefighter to go into a burning building for 20$ an hour….I didn’t say that’s what they receive now, try READING AND THINKING before posting detoe43.

Oh…and pgpulp….Your a total idiot if your driving around FINGERING city workers, speaks volumes about your maturity level!

As usual (just like CF18) CrysBoron is spewing BS.

Cities in excess of 15,000 pop. pay 90% excluding overtime.

Cities between 5,000 and 15,000 pop. pay 70% of the cost, excluding overtime.

“you WOULD NOT get a Firefighter to go into a burning building for 20$ an hour”

CrysBoron, are you denying the fact there are many, many volunteer firefighters ?

Oh, whoops. I was referring to the RCMP CrysBoron. Private police forces are paid 100% by the municipalities. (should I throw a bunch of capital letters in there…..make it easier for you to read ?)

Ah CrysBaron, Did you even bother to look up how the RCMP are paid? Perhaps in your infinite knowledge you could explain (if the Feds pay local members) why we have a budget of $20.4 million for police in PG?
Read what I wrote, as this seems to be your demand to me. I stated that Firefighters no longer run into burning buildings (at any wage). If you want anyone to take you seriously, lay off the personal attacks, it lessens the impact & validity of your statements.
