Cougars TBirds Rematch Preview.

Wednesday, January 8, 2014 @ 1:05 PM

In a season filled with high scoring wild games, last night's game was certainly right up there with as one of the most bizzare games of the Prince George Cougars 2013-2014 season. Now tonight the Cougars will look to put last night's 9-7 loss behind them, and climb back into the win column with a positive result tonight against the Thunderbirds.

OVERVIEW:

Steve Konowalchuk's Seattle Thunderbirds will play their fifth game in six nights tonight in Prince George. At 23-14-2-3 the Thunderbirds boast the sixth best record in the WHL's Western Conference and snapped a five game losing streak last night with their win in Prince George. So far this season the T-Birds are 1-0-0-1 against the Cougars and a win plus some help from Portland could vault them into fifth place in the West.

WHO'S UP FRONT:

With three goals and an assist in last night's game, rookie forward Ryan Gropp certainly made his presence felt for all of the right reasons for Seattle. Originally selected sixth overall in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, Gropp joined the T-Birds in mid October and has been a nice addition with 10 goals and 18 points in 29 games. Gropp has a late birthday and won't be NHL draft eligible until 2015.

WHO'S ON D:

While Shea Theodore might be the face of the Seattle Thunderbirds blueline, last night they got some nice offensive contributions from some others. Evan Wardley had a goal and an assist for Seattle while Adam Henry also chimed in with a power play goal. The T-Birds have a big and versitile group of blueliners and while they won't be happy with allowing seven goals against, they'll be pleased with contributing offensively.

WHO'S IN GOAL:

Last night was a real eye-opener for rookie netminder Logan Flodell. The highly touted goaltender out of Regina, SK earned his first career WHL victory, but did so allowing seven goals on 28 shots faced, which is not exactly flattering. That said, a win is a win, and that should help Flodell's confidence as he forges ahead in his career. Will Danny Mumaugh be back between the pipes tonight for Seattle? Or does Flodell get another look?

X-FACTOR:

Seattle's power play has not exactly been consistent this season, but last night the power play was probably the difference-maker in the game. Seattle finished three-for-three on the power play, and used it to their advantage twice in the first period in order to help restore some ties after two different one-goal deficits. Tonight the Cougars will need to be mindful of their power play success and not allow Seattle many opportunities to take advantage.

OVERVIEW:

Mark Holick's team heads into tonight's game with an overall record of 16-22-2-3. They once again trail the Tri-City Americans by five points in the race for eighth place in the Western Conference standings, and lost their first game of 2014 last night at home. Now it's all about a positive response as the Cougars look to take advantage of a Seattle group that is playing for a fifth time in six nights.

WHO'S UP FRONT:

With another five point game, Todd Fiddler is now at 22 goals and 50 points this season, which puts him in 10th in the Western Hockey League. Fiddler has 20 goals and 20 assists in 23 games since joining the Prince George Cougars from Moose Jaw, and lately has been 'automatic' for the Cougars as he has 12 points in his past three games.

WHO'S ON D:

Marc McNulty's strong offensive start to 2014 continued last night with another assist which now puts him at 21 points for the season. The Detroit Red Wings prospect didn't have the greatest night in his own zone, but based on how well he has played as of late, it's forgivable provided it doesn't become a habit. McNulty is a rare breed in that he's so tall, but he's got tremendous agility as patience as well. Hopefully tonight he can bounce back with a strong two-way effort that can help lead the Cougars to victory.

WHO'S IN GOAL:

With no backup goaltender readily available, Ty Edmonds will once again be called upon to man the goal for the Cougars tonight. This will be his 16th straight start, and over the past 16 games, we've seen a little bit of everything from him. Most night's he's given his team a fair shake and a great chance to win, but other nights he's really struggled. Most rookies aren't thrown into the fire the way that Edmonds has been this season, but considering the fact that there's no other option, he has no choice but to accept his circumstances and bounce back tonight with a better effort against Seattle. The Cougars need Edmonds to out-duel his counterpart tonight in order to get back on a winning track.

X-FACTOR:

Tonight marks the 300th career WHL game for Klarc Wilson. The 20-year-old from Edmonton, AB has already set new season highs for goals and points, and is looking like a player who really wants to get to that next level once his final season in the WHL is over. Not only has Wilson's leadership and offensive contributiosn been a huge asset, but he's also one of just two remaining Cougars who have dresed in every single game so far this season. Hopefully Wilson can have a night to remember tonight for all of the right reasons.
