Prince George, B.C.- It’s called “Sirens for Life”,  a challenge to see which emergency responders in Prince George can  donate the most blood to the Canadian  Blood Services  by the end of January.  Prince George Fire and Rescue, the Ambulance Service, and the Prince George RCMP are  facinng off against each other  to see which  group can donate the most blood  in January.

This morning, Prince George RCMP Detachment Superintendent Eric Stubbs,  Corporal Craig Douglass and Sergeant Al Steinhauser, all rolled up their sleeves to donate blood.

It was the first time for Cpl. Douglass, “It’s something I wanted to do for  years, and it just  never happened, so I’m glad  I have this opportunity to get out and make a donation that could really, help save  someone’s life.”

When his session was complete,  Douglass  said he  didn’t feel one bit different than he did before the process started.  He does have one regret though,  “I wish  I had done this sooner.”

Challenges such as  the Sirens for Life,  help raise awareness  and encourage others to  donate blood.  Superintendent Eric Stubbs  says he hasn’t set any goals for his team  to meet, but is hopeful  officers can  find  the time to  visit the  Blood Services  Clinic on Westwood, and make a donation.

You  don’t have to be an emergency responder to  take part in the challenge.  Anyone can  make  a donation and  sign the  challenge book   in support of their  favoured first  responders.

There is a prize at the end of the challenge,  which wraps up  at the end of January.  The  group that has the  most members, or supporters  donate blood,  will see the leaders of the other two groups , show up in dress uniform and deliver  donuts and coffee to the “winners”.  One thing is certain says Superintendent Stubbs,  when it comes to donating blood “There are no losers.”
