Warm Weather A Good News, Bad News Tale
Prince George, B.C. – The balmy weather in Prince George over the past week hasn’t resulted in any temperature records but it has been enough to curtail activity at the Outdoor Ice Oval.
Friday’s high temperature of 3.3 degrees fell short of the record high for the day of 8.2, set in 1977. And the low of just minus 7 was nothing compared to the minus 48.3 degrees set on January 17th, 1950.
However, the recent warm spell, which has done a dandy job of clearing many city streets, has not been such good news to the folks with the Outdoor Ice Oval Society. They had this notice posted on their web page last night:
“The oval remains closed due to mild temperatures.
We're hoping it gets cold enough overnight for the oval to fully freeze and for us to open tomorrow. We'll post an update before noon on Saturday.”
So we’ll await that update and pass it along. The forecast high today is plus 2, under cloudy skies with a slight chance of afternoon showers or flurries.

We are already below expected for last night and sitting at -6 just after 9 from a low of -11. Need some real wind to push the warm air up north in a hurry.

I thought it never went above 0 in January in the old days? ;-)
Growing up in PG in the 80s, I do not recall any above 0 temperatures in January. I do recall January being the coldest month in the year, with -30 degrees temperatures for 1-2 weeks and it pushed -40 for a day or 2 every couple of years. Now -40 in PG is unheard of, and -30 for more than a couple of days in a row is also rare.
I guess the new norm is warmer winters and cooler summers.
Memory is not the best thing to go by
1980 7 days above zero (+3 Jan 22 and 23), 1981 15 days above zero (+13 highest Jan 22, 1981), 1982 3 days above zero, 1983 16 days above zero (+6 highest Jan 11, 1983), 1984 19 days above zero (+7 Jan 2, 4, and 27th), 1985 13 days above zero (+6 Jan 19), 1986 22 days above zero (+9 Jan 10), 1987 18 days above zero (+6 Jan 11 and 30th), 1988 13 days above zero (+5 Jan 22), 1989 12 days above zero (+6 Jan 26), 1990 11 days above zero (+4 Jan 6, 7 and 9th)
2012 17 days above zero (+7 Jan 4)(-34 Jan 18 and 19), 2013 10 days above zero (+6 Jan 18)(-27 Jan 12 and 13)
missed this one – 1982 (+5 Jan 14)
But it got super cold in the 80s…here are the lows for the month and number of days below -30 celcius
1980 -39 Jan 10, -37 Jan 9 rest above -30 for low
1981 -17 Jan 30, -16 Jan 16 and 17 rest above -11 for a low
1982 -38 Jan 5, -32 Jan 26, -31 Jan 25 rest above -30 for a low
1983 -20 Jan 22, -19 Jan 23 and 24 rest -16 for one day and above
1984 -23 Jan 17, -22 Jan 16, -21 Jan 18, -19 Jan 19 rest are -13 one day, -11 one day and rest above -10
1985 -27 Jan 1, -18 Jan 2, rest are -10 and above except last 3 days of Jan -17, -16, -20
1986 -22 Jan 4, -20 Jan 3, -19 Jan 4, -15 Jan 2 and rest are above -10
1987 -18 Jan 14, -17 Jan 23, -16 Jan 15, -15 Jan 8, -14 Jan 19, rest are above -13 for one day, and -12 for the month 3 days above zero as a low
1988 -37 Jan 31, -36 Jan 30, -31 Jan 29, 8 days of -20s and rest above that
1989 -32 Jan 7, -31 Jan 31, -28 Jan 6 and 30, 2 other -20s and rest above
1990 -38 Jan 31, -29 Jan 30, -22 Jan 29, 3 days below -10 and rest above -10 for a low
You may be confusing wind chill into your figures but I see absolutely no 1-2 weeks in the -30s at all in the 1980s, longest streak below -30 was 3 days. 6 years of the 11 did not even have temps below -30 and not one year had a below -40 temperature in January for the fantastic 80s
