Cougars Sink Hurricanes 5-2.
Tuesdsay night in Prince George, the Cougars wrapped up a three game home stand with a convincing 5-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Four different Cougars had at least two points and Adam Beukeboom turned aside 24 of the 26 shots he faced to secure his second victory of the season for the Cougars who are now 18-24-2-5 on the season.
Lethbridge opened the scoring at 3:07 on the power play. Bryton Sayers took a pass at the right point, snuck in a few feet and then snuck a shot through traffic and in for his third of the season and an early lead for the visitors.
Prince George responded with an equalizer just over three minutes later. Brett Roulston freed the puck from behind the Lethbridge goal then found Tyler Mrkonjic a long the left wing wall. Mrkonjic made a nifty move to the inside and then stuffed a low shut past Jonny Hogue for his fourth goal of the season.
The first period ended in a 1-1 tie with Lethbridge outshooting the Cougars 14-12.
It remained a tie until 13:36 of the second. That's when Jordan Tkatch and Troy Bourke teamed up for Bourke's 15th goal of the season. After Hogue turned aside Tkatch's initial chance, Tkatch grabbed the rebound, fed Bourke in front, and the captain made no mistake to give his team the lead.
Back came the Hurricanes a few minutes later when Taylor Cooper snuck a shot past Adam Beukeboom from a tough angle on the left wing. Cooper's ninth goal of the season was unassisted and it tied the game at two.
19 seconds later the Cougars restored a lead that they would keep for the remainder of the game. Jansen Harkins, Troy Bourke and Jordan Tkatch combined in a three-way passing play which resulted in Tkatch's 12th of the season. The goal had to be reviewed because it appeared as if Tkatch had possibly kicked he puck in. But the referee ruled good goal, and the Cougars took a 3-2 lead into the intermission.
Late in the third the Cougars made it 4-2 when Tyler Mrkonjic set up Brett Roulston on a two-on-one. Roulston tipped home the Mrkonjic pass for his first goal of the season and first since March 4, 2013. Marc McNulty then added a power play marker less than a minute later to secure the 5-2 score for Prince George.
Prince George outshot Lethbridge 44-26 and finished one-for-five on the power play. Lethbridge responded with a one-for-four effort in their power play chances.
With the win, the Cougars move back within five points of the Tri-City Americans for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Cougars will look to extend their winning streak on Friday when they kick off a six-game road trip in Regina, SK.
