Friday Free for All- Jan. 24th, 2014
Friday, January 24, 2014 @ 12:00 AM
It's been a very busy week.
The eleventh annual Natural Resources Forum is touted as having record numbers of delegates and exhibitors.
There are to be improvements to the standard of maintenance for both Highway 97 and Highway 16, and Council for the City of Prince George is looking for a post mortem from it's operations department to see what, if anything, can be learned from the snow removal issues that developed through December.
But today is not about us setting the agenda for your discussion. It is time for the Friday Free for All, when you pick the topic.
The rules remain the same,
Keep it clean
Keep it legal
No bullying.

A safe and pleasant week end to all.

This week Prime Minister Harper revealed his dark sinister side for all the world to see in his ode to Israel. Not to be outdone Harper used his opportunity to one up the far right wing Likud settlers every chance he could. If one is to look at his words and the policy he supports in Israel, and then apply it to Canada, one would see we have huge threats here in Canada from the totalitarian mindset of Harper.
Harper announced in his speech to the Knesset that it is a ânew kind of anti-semitismâ to criticize Israeli Likud policy on settlements and its implications in apartheid. A way to pre-empt any debate on the subject with the chill that the implications of anti-semitism stirs up in peoples emotions. A sign post on who makes Harpers enemies list, and by extension Harperâs necessity of ignoring as irrelevant an opposing view point on humanism.
Harper would not condemn the Israeli settlements, and their expansion, and in fact went out of his way to justify their existence as that of a minority in a world of enemies. Harper also claims to support the âTwo Stateâ solution. The problem being that most everyone in the world realizes you can not have continued settlement expansion, and still have a two state solution. The whole world sees Israeli policy as grabbing as much of the Palestinian land as they can possibly get away with, and in doing so making a two state solution a defacto impossibility (its about the most transparent and truthful thing Israel does in relation to the Palestinians). The issue of the Palestinians is not one about two state security issues, but rather the discriminatory nature of the one state that is.
Is the defacto one state reality going to be one of Palestinians surrounded by military encampments and sectioned off populations divided by prison fences that restrict ones freedoms based on religion and ethnicities? A one state where far right wing settlers that Harper defends with the political chill of anti-semitism are governed by a civilian settler law, and the Palestinians are governed by arbitrary military law? The two sets of laws for different ethnicities administered by one state is by definition apartheid.
Or will the one state be one where everyone is protected by the same laws and guarantees of protection before the law whether Jewish, Christian, Muslim or atheist⦠a non apartheid state? And why is it that Harper feels threatened by this to the point of making an enemies list of those that would express an opinion on the matter?
In Harpers world are we all Palestinians of a different shade? Does the world view of Harper in Israel, as it relates to Palestinians, also apply to residents of Northern BC that stand opposed to Northern Gateway? Does standing opposed to Northern Gateway get one on Harpers enemies list of radicals and potential terrorists? If one opposes Harper policy does that translate into Harper attacking the persons integrity, rather than confronting the ideas expressed?
Harper said, â”Canada supports Israel because it is right to do so. It’s a very Canadian trait: to do something for no reason other than that is right.”
Canada once stood as a fair arbiter of internationalism in the sense of multilateral respect for the rule of law in just causes. Picking the side of Israeli settlers stealing Palestinian lands in occupied territories that are governed by apartheid legalities is not the âright thing to doâ in the name of Canada even if Harper says it is.
The Likud form of political Zionism is destructive, racist, extremist, undemocratic and hateful. It claims settler supremacy, specialness and uniqueness. It espouses violence as a means to an end. It deplores peaceful coexistence with its Arab neighbors. It chooses settler style confrontation over diplomacy. It prioritizes militarism, belligerence, intimidation and naked aggression. It’s repugnant, indefensible, destructive and malignant. It’s the enemy of Jews and non-Jews alike. It’s the polar opposite to fundamental moral and ethical values. The Likud form of political Zionism in no way shares Canadian values no matter how forcefully Harper makes this insistence under the threat of ânew anti-semitismâ accusations for anyone that would raise questions.
I predict that in 30-years the next generations of Canadians will be watching you-tube videoâs of Harpers speech to the Knesset with the same kind of astonishment as someone from our generation would have while watch the kind of racist speeches of those that fought against the American civil rights movement in the American deep south during the 60âs. That will be the Harper legacy⦠one of a guy who was way out of step with history in his zeal to show his ignorance, and in doing so exposing his fraudulent notion of being a man fighting for freedom and rule of law. Harperâs support of Likud extremism subverts regional peace. Supporting Israel’s worst crimes prevents the possibility of peace.
If undermining core Canadian values while representing Canada abroad wasnât enough⦠Harper also gave out a war guarantee to a country that is the worldâs foremost belligerent. A chicken hawk move that puts Canadian sons and daughters on the line. Harper swore allegiance to Israel saying, “through fire and water, Canada will stand with you”. Reiterating past promises and agreements to fight Israelâs enemies if Israel is attacked. The problem is Israel has already said they plan to attack Iran, and on a number of occasions have taken unilateral action in Syria⦠in essence a war promise is akin to contracting out sovereignty on the decision to go to war⦠this should be a red flag for every Canadian. WW2 happened in large part because Britain gave a war promise and thus contracted out its sovereignty for the decision to go to war by giving a war promise to Poland excluding any possibility of a negotiated solution. Poland took this war promise and falsely believed it would save them when they rejected any options to avoid war⦠and Israel with friends like Harper will do exactly the same thing.
Something for all Canadians to consider in regards to our Prime Minister and how he might drag us into a war for belligerents (the purpose of his trip) that donât deserve the blood of our soldiers, and for the citizens of Northern BC who may find themselves on his enemies list for their opposition to his Northern Gateway policy.
IMHO
Happy Friday all,
Class 1,2,3,etc highway maintenance. Who would have thought there were all these levels of service options. Makes one wonder what class of service the city is providing and if I can have a payment option on my taxes pick the class of service I would like .
I did learn there is a class 1,2 and three option in carpet installers that is a unknown secret . Always ask for class one .
Just to start my day off right , I got up this am , looked up at the sky an apologised to all humanity for all the sins my generations of unknown relations and myself have committed since the big bang . Wow , that feels better.
Eagleone get your own web-soapbox too cry on.
After yesterday’s local tv report on the city street plowing – if I lived on beech cresent, I would arrange to pick-up the Mayor and a few city council members along with Bill G in the front seat directly for a ride to that area and have him explain to the boss …why …. I feel for you because its gonna be awhile before mother nature will take care of that….however why the hell should your people live like that when taxes are being paid. etc.
Our streets were like that for about two weeks and it was nothing but a nightmare heading out and heading home daily. I was so close of being hit head-on, I hold my breath hoping there’s no bus heading opposite direction at the same time I’m travelling cause there’s no way in hell would I had room to move over….
why should drivers feel that way when driving. I say, Mayor Green help out these people now….. not a good ride.
Just sharing a public concern for the kind of leadership we have, not in anyway crying.
Eagleone-SSDD!
Ispy says from flu shot post.
“NoWay- we health care professionals were given these choices, get the shot or wear a mask all the times fro Dec 1st through till April. It is enforced, believe me.
We health care professionals wish the public would adhere to the rules posted by all entrances stating if you’ve haven’t had your shot wear a mask, if you are exhibiting signs of being ill don’t come to visit! The basic rules you learned should be applied too-wash your hands, cover your mouth/nose when you sneeze or cough, throw your tissues and stay away from people who are already ill or compromised, they don’t need your germs too!”
Don’t all health care professionals know that the flu shots efficacy isn’t 100%? Meaning you can still get the flu even though you have received the shot. So wouldn’t the best most professional healthcare worker out there wear a mask too? I wished the healthcare professionals would practice what they preach. Getting the flu shot is giving a lot a folks the illusion that they won’t get the flu! So put on on darn mask too!
I wonder why there’s no reports about Kin 1 opening for the weekend? That’s 15 million of your dollars.
“We’ve outsourced our manufacturing and much of our pollution, but some of it is blowing back across the Pacific to haunt us.” So says University of California scientist Steve Davis. Smog from Chinese factories has already saturated cities like Beijing, where residents go about in surgical masks, and crossed the East China Sea to foul the air of Korea and Japan.
Now China’s smog is coming to America’s West.
Among the pollutants wafting their way over the Pacific, says the Guardian, is black carbon, which is “linked to cancer, emphysema and heart and lung diseases,” and travels “huge distances on global winds known as ‘westerlies.'”
As the Chinese factories fouling Asia’s air arose to meet the demands of Western consumers, says Beijing, the West should help pay the cost of cleaning up their polluted and poisoned environment.
Just a reminder: if you get a Call from Microsoft, hang up it,s a FRAUD, do not talk to them. This kind of Calls are making the rounds again!
Safe Computing to all, so just hang up, Microsoft does not want to talk to you.
Thanks to the city workers who came down our street last night and scraped the ice and widened the roads. I understand how long it must take to get all the roads in town completed. Thanks again.
To the loader driver my only pet peeve is that you cleared one side of my driveway but not the other and left huge chunks of snow and ice I can’t even move. I will eventually get it moved but I can only think of those who don’t have the equipment or strength to get these chunks of ice moved. I am not looking to have the end of my driveway cleared but when huge chunks of snow and ice are left that can’t be moved please think ahead to those who may not be able to get these moved. Thanks for all you do, I know you are trying.
Yes a big thankyou to the snow removal crews. We know you do a good job when given the chance. Too bad you can’t just do it your way all the time. Or, maybe you could. It seems your boss doesn’t know what you’re doing anyway so just do the best you can.
Very well written Eagleone. I was appalled with the words and tone of Harpers visit to Isreal. Siding with Isreal is not the Canadian way. The Canadian way is to promote peace and neutrality… unless of course you are directly threatening Canadians. Canada should not be putting its fingers into that mud pie.
Locally, speaking… has anyone noticed a benefit from Boundary Rd since it’s opening?
Ben, was fantastic at roast for Pat Bell on Tuesday night. He looked rather dapper as well. The event paid homage to the amazing work Pat Bell accomplished. Time ran out and many things were not mentioned. This humble man will be missed.
Has anyone driven down Dufferin St lately? It parallels Westwood Elementary, and basically there should be a “road closed” sign at both ends, it is so bad. I could understand during the Christmas holidays it not being plowed, but school has been back for 3 weeks now, and it is in as bad a shape as I have ever seen. What kind of poor planning caused this??
Eagleone left out some points. Israeli history in the area goes back over 3500 years. They got run out. Surrounded by radicals that want to destroy them. Israeli population is 20% Arab with full rights. How does apartheid apply then? Harper does not agree with the settlements.
I think the Kin 1 opening is a soft opening. I believe there will be a proper grand opening in the near future.
Here is the entire speech for those who want to read what was actually said and not what is inferred to have been said by the Eagle

I wonder how many of the majority are health care professionals?
NoWay-you asked, I answered.
Our choices were get the shot OR wear a mask all the time while in contact with patients. We know there is no 100% guarantee against the flu.
Why should we do both? The public needs to be responsible and accountable to themselves and the “ill” people they are wanting to visit. Stay home if you are ill or exhibiting symptoms, that goes for both staff and the public, it is common sense!
Is spring here early? Or is winter yet to come?
it’s just the usual mid January loll.
In a week or two it will be nasty cold for a couple of weeks. Then a mild known as a chinook, then another freeze, followed by a warm tease in march.
Have any of you received your utility bill statement from the City of PG. My monthly payment is going from $69.00 per month to $80.00 per month. Will it ever end?
I saw one of the squirrels walking along the top of the fence just now. They seem to think it is spring.
The weather network’s prediction over the next two weeks is more of the same, daytime temps either side of 0C with more sun than precipitation.
Yup. Have to agree. Winter’s not done yet. February can be cold and snowy. I would count on it since January has been so balmy.
Why are there so many people out there driving in the dark with their headlights off? Their daytime running lights do not illuminate the road very well; do they not notice that they can’t see the road in front of them?
It’s always a bit of a surprise to come up behind one of these knobs and not see them until I’m a lot closer then I really want to be.
axman – I’m just amazed at the fact that they don’t notice that their dash isn’t lit up.
Is it just me or are more people also driving around town with their hi-beams on? Do they not see that light on their dash indicating they’re on? Or do they just not care that they’re blinding people?
“Has anyone driven down Dufferin St lately? It parallels Westwood Elementary, and basically there should be a “road closed” sign at both ends, it is so bad.”
Yes, I drove it a couple of days ago. It was very bad. I drive a 4×4,and was worried it would break my axles. Slow and bumpy going, and heaven forbid you meet another vehicle on it. They are currently plowing Pinewood. Again. The side streets around Pinewood however, are very hazardous. The moral of this story: live on Pinewood. ;)
I want to get the conversation started so people of PG start to think about who they want to lead our city come November 2014. I believe we need progressive leaders who do not prescribe to the ideology that fiscal responsibility means cutting services to our city. I also believe that our leaders should work towards foster growth of a healthy community where in the residence are proud of their city and its inclusiveness. I also believe that our leaders need to stand up against the Provincial Government when their direction is counter to what our city and residence need. So take the time to think about what you want in our leaders and make sure you get out to “all candidate forums” and make sure you get out and vote in the November 2014 Municipal elections our city is counting on you.
Heisenberg. Sometimes fiscal responsibility DOES mean cutting services, or at the very least reducing the cost of providing services.
Could you give us some examples of where the Provincial Governments direction was counter to what the city and residences need??. Seems to me they are two pea’s in the same pod, scratching each other’s backs and generally having a good time on tax dollars.
**All candidate forums** are usually controlled insofar as talking directly to the candidates are concerned, and are not an effective way to get their perspective, especially when the questions are posed by the press, or some other group.
What we need is a public forum, where the candidates can make a speech, outlining their platform, and then be subject questions from the public at large.
I agree that the citizens of Prince George need to get seriously involved in the next Municipal election to ensure that we get good people elected to represent us. What’s the chance of that happening??
There are some readers on this site that seem to be upset Mayor Green and Council is spending $393,000 on three full-time equivalent communication positions at city hall.
Hmm⦠so I guess it’s alright for a Federal Conservative government to hire over 1,500 communication specialists to help spin it’s messages to the media and a gulible public?
“The Hill Times went through the government electronic directory service to get a rough idea of how many communications staffersâpeople paid to help craft and disseminate any given government messageâcurrently work in the public service, ministerial offices, the PMO and the PCO. In all, there are currently around 1,500 communications staffers working in government offices and departments across Canada, including 87 in the PMO and PCO.”
“Thatâs roughly five for every MP. And if that total doesnât include staff employed by opposition MPs and leadersâ offices, the ratio is even higher.”
http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/11/21/so-many-people-to-say-nothing/
So other political parties don’t have BS spinners I take from what you are saying.
I like the dopes that run around with their fog lights on day and night blinding everyone. I guess it’s good to be ready just in case when they drive around a corner and it’s foggy they will beable to see where they are driving.
thanks for the info outwest, got a call yesterday telling me my computer was infected.hung up right away.
Sociable wondering if you have any thoughts on wealth redistribution by the UN under the guiseof so called climate change. Just putting it out there
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2014/01/24/the-world-economic-forum-gets-hijacked-by-climate-alarmism/
Heyyyyy Has anyone noticed I’m here today????
Dragonmaster – I had one of those behind me last night in a lifted truck with both HID heads and fogs. I almost got out at a red light and smashed them all.
We picked up an RV Times magazine, no mention of camp sites in Prince George nor events that take place here. Who looks after promoting our City ???
Press secretaries do a lot more than just write speeches and answer the phone. It is slightly different than running a city, for example the mayor or city manager does not need someone to go over the news and happenings of the day all over Canada to find out which ones are relevant to the office and require a response. The mayor and city manager can just open the paper or watch CKPG at night and they are all caught up
Hey polar7018 I want to get one of those calls and tell them we don’t have a computer… and see what the response is. I didn’t think tablets get infected with the things, but if they do just reset it to factory and good to go again
You should do both ispy just in case your flu shot doesn’t work!
From a realiable source the main reason the snow removal is so bad is because half the equipment was broke down. Due to 3 consecutive year of cuts in the maintenance shop there isn’t enough people to fix the broke down equipment in a timely manner.
reply to only2c about boundary road …have to say I live out here and have to say unless they direct all heavy truck traffic coming from the east to highway 97 and trucks coming from the south to highway 16 east its a bust ,, instead these large trucks continue to blast through the pineview school zone at well over 70k posted speed 30 k many as fast as 100 k , goes on all day and night ,, needs to change and needs more police to slow them down and the people who planned this road need to enforce the trucks to use boundary road .
The Old Cariboo Highwy is still part of our Highway system, and as long as it is cost efficient for trucks to use this road they will.
I assume that a lot of the traffic would be logs going to Carrier Lumber via the back route, and logs going to Dunkley. Plus the empty trucks going back. Any traffic from the East going South on 97 or East off 97,would naturally use the Old Cariboo Highway as opposed to the Boundary Road cut-off.
So I suspect at this point there is very little traffic on the Boundary Road Cut-off.
very little traffic Palopu , so what do you suppose its there for ???,,,i say for taking dangerous goods and very heavy truck traffic off a 70 k highway past many homes and a school zone .. mostly my point was that vehicles travel way to fast, speeding through the school zone … locals know to slow down but its a very small percentage of the trucks who travel it daily , loggers are the best at doing the speed .. if I shot a video of a day in front of the school during school hours you would be appalled
Did anyone see CKPG tonight? Stolz and Hall have thrown their hats into the ring to run again…………..sigh
Say Say Say: Well someone must be reading these comments. Beech was done this afternoon and the other day when I mentioned Cherry, they got right on it too!
Outwest: slinky: My wife did answer one of those calls the other night. She told them she doesn’t even have a computer. They couldn’t hang up fast enough!
peegee: I wish you had! Take their license number and report them. I don’t know what it is that makes some people want to be so offensive.
Seamut:-“Sociable wondering if you have any thoughts on wealth redistribution by the UN under the guiseof so called climate change. Just putting it out there.”
——————————————–
My opinion of so called climate change is similar to yours, Seamut. I don’t believe in wealth (money, actually) re-distribution by the UN or anyone else under any guise. Money, in this country and every other one I know of, is already chronically insufficient in the hands of the general public to fully liquidate the costs of all articles in existence ALREADY made and for sale that are PRICED in money. You don’t cure any insufficiency by ‘re-distributing it’, especially internationally. All that would do, if there were any substance to the allegation that man made climate change is wrecking the world, is further accelerate the process.
Socredible sorry for name change, typing and brain have never much co-operated.
Oh my, just read the Citizen resident science column. Quote “For those who argue that climate change is not happening” I ask do you mean climate change in general or mann caused warming or natural warming, please clarify. You will be hard pressed to find anyone denying that climate changes but there are those who will argue about the warming and the amount man has contributed if any at all. The climate always changes or do you deny that. Oh in the context that the term, climate change, has morphed into, climate change means warming, not cooling.
Those that push man will cook the planet used to say, global warming, but that was not working out very well then the name morphed into climate disruption, well looking at climate history that did not work out very well also. So the general term climate change is used to infer mann caused global warming not climate change in general. Gets confusing. Another reason to use the term climate change is scientist even after hundreds of billions spent cannot separate the natural or mann caused effects on climate. If mann has any effect at all.
He then goes onto say according to NASA,” 2013 has tied with 2009 and 2006 for the seventh warmest since 1880. This continues the long term trend of increasing global temperatures and adds to the pile of warmest years occurring since 2000.
Indeed, in the past 134 years, nine of the 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2000. The only exception 1998. He then goes on to say in the last 134 years, nine of the 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2000. The only exception 1998.”
Wait one minute if 2013 only tied with 2009 2006 seems the so called pause in warming is still there and since only .09 degrees separates the warmest years with .1 degree error bar where is this burning warming the columnist alludes to. Also since the end of the Little Ice Age around 1880 the earth has warmed only about 1 degree on its way to what it was before the LIA.
Now about temperature records, NASA has been shown to adjust earlier temperatures down and more recent temperatures up trying to eliminate the warmer 1935 to 1945. Heck even the IPCC, the authority that governments use on so called climate change has recognized temperatures are not increasing as computer models predicted dispite the natural and/or man caused rise in C02 .
Here is what NASA actually showed.
NASA and NOAA Confirm Global Temperature Standstill Continues
â¦Date: 21/01/14
â¦Dr David Whitehouse
â¦In a â¦joint press conference NOAA and NASA have just released data for the global surface temperature for 2013. In summary they both show that the âpauseâ in global surface temperature that began in 1997, according to some estimates, continues.
Statistically speaking there has been no significant trend in global temperatures over this period. All these years fall within the error bars of 0.1 deg C. The trend is less than this and is statistically insignificant. There is no statistical case for representing the post-1997 data as anything other than a constant line. The graphs presented at the press conference omitted those error bars.
When asked for an explanation for the âpauseâ by reporters Dr Gavin Schmidt of NASA and Dr Thomas Karl of NOAA spoke of contributions from volcanoes, pollution, a quiet Sun and natural variability. In other words, they donât know.
NASA has a temperature anomaly of 0.61 deg C above the average of 14.0 (1951 â 80) making it the 7th warmest year. Note that it is identical to 2003 and only 0.01 above 2009 and 2006. Taking into account the errors there has been no change since last year.
NOAA also has 2013 as the 4th warmest year, at 0.62 deg C above the global 20th century average of 13.9 deg C. Note that only 0.09 deg C separates their top ten warmest years. Each year has an associated error of 0.1 deg.
Funny how the few global warming deniers on this site believe that smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer, yet cannot accept the fact that climate change / global warming is caused by human activity.

honestjoe… Don’t know where you are, but I’m up by walmart area and my utility bill went up only ten bucks a month. wowww Less garbage we put out, the more we pay, same with water.
