Another New Highway Webcam On Line

Friday, January 24, 2014 @ 3:49 AM

Burns Lake, B.C.-  Drivers now have one more tool to  use when planning their  journey.

DriveBC has added a new highway webcam on Highway16  to it's suite of highway cameras.

The webcam is located at Priestly Hill, approximately 32 kilometres east of Burns Lake looking east. It’s the 20th webcam along Highway 16, and the third near Burns Lake.

“DriveBC is an invaluable resource that everyone should use whenever planning a trip,” says Nechako Lakes MLA, John Rustad. “We are continuously adding webcams on the DriveBC website so drivers can always be well prepared before hitting the roads. On Highway 16 particularly, it is so important to know the latest road conditions so everyone arrives at their final destination safely.”

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Transportation announced it would be upgrading  the classification of all of Highway 16 to "Class A" .  That means  the  winter maintenance standard will be  higher, with patrols every 4 hours instead of  8,  and snow removal  when snow is at a depth of 4 centimeters instead of the current 6.

Good location for a camera… another good location would be the 6-mile hill between Houston and Burns Lake.

Eagle… there has been a camera there for quite a few years… it fell of my bumper at the pull out when I stopped to water the weeds one evening… never did find it… but I know it is still there… somewhere !!!! :-)

Silly me, and here I thought if you look out the windshield at what the road looks like ahead of you and adjust your driving accordingly, you’d have a good idea of what is coming!

GM … true, and of course nobody ever expects the real conditions to be different from the web cam pics… because everyone knows that pics NEVER lie (eye roll) !!!

And BTW Eagle… there really is a MOH cam at 6 mile hill… you will find it on the Hiway 16 group.

cameras are much cheaper than building better roads.

6 mile hill? To me it was always ‘Hungry Hill’; and I was there riding on a grader with my dad when they were building the road.

Remember, defensive drivers look ahead at the horizon for what is coming up.

Anyone with access to the web through their smart phone would be able to lengthen that real time view by linking to the web cams coming up.

Who knows, just as we have GPS linkages now, there could be such linkages to DriveBC on heads-up displays in cares quite soon.

Phew … a post without a cut and paste. Hopefully the prediction is not too far out of line with my expertise. LOL

ntkr13 … “Hungry Hill” is actually further along towards Telkwa from Houston a few miles… starts at the bottom, just a bit from the Wallcot Bridge road going East towards Houston… great hill for free wheeling in a soap-box… if you have the dangly bits for it !!! Also known as the range of one of the largest Grizzlies in BC. Grizzlies are always “hungry”.

Six Mile Hill is the stretch from the bench East of Topley past Broman Lake to the last corner just before the Rose Lake high point… also the marker for the Pacific Divide.
