Matters Inquest Set to Resume
Prince George, B.C. – The Coroners Inquest into the RCMP shooting death of Greg Matters, resumes in Prince George this morning.
While the order of witness appearance was not known at publication time, BC Coroners Service spokesperson Barb McLintock says there are 5 witnesses scheduled to give testimony. Four of those witnesses are members of the RCMP and the fifth is from the Independent Investigations Office to explain their investigation.
McLintock says, barring any last minute additions to the witness list, the inquest is expected to conclude mid week, with the Coroner’s Jury delivering its recommendations. The inquest has already heard two weeks of testimony in October. It was adjourned until today, the first available time for all involved.
Greg Matters, a Canadian forces veteran, was known to have suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the wake of his service in Bosnia. He was shot to death on a rural family property on the east side of Prince George, September 10th, 2012 in a final confrontation with police. The trouble had started with an altercation between Matters and his brother at the home of their mother in the early hours of September 9th.
A Coroner's Inquest cannot place blame, it can only determine the cause of death, and make recommendations aimed at preventing such a tragedy in the future.
