Prince George, B.C. – The Coroners Jury has delivered 9 recommendations at the close of the inquest into the death of Gregory Matters.
The death has been classified as homicide, with the cause of death being two gunshot wounds to the posterior chest.
The recommendations are:
1: Audio visual recording devices be worn by all ERT members upon deployment
2 Arwen gun be included in the RCMP`s options as a less lethal weapon
3. Program be developed to effectively train all ERT members on use of all less lethal weapons
4. A qualified mental health professional be made available ( possibly on call) to all ERT deployment situations, similar to the Vancouver Police Department "Car 87".
5. Mental health training be provided to all RCMP members within first year of service
6. RCMP police dogs be utilized to apprehend armed suspects
7. Information from RCMP cell phones be extracted and held following ERT deployment.
8. Department of National Defence have programs developed to monitor the physical, emotional and financial health of members of the Armed Forces upon discharge
9 That the Dept. of National Defence and Veterans Affairs ensure there is adequate support and education on Post Traumatic Stress disorder be made available to family and loved ones of those suffering from PTSD.
Holding hands, Greg Matters' mother Lorraine and sister Tracy say they are delighted with the recommendations. Two of the recommendations from the jury had been suggested by the family, namely the call for audi-visual recording devices and support for veterans.
"It doesn't end here" says Tracy, "We will pursue whatever other avenues we can ,whether it be civil or criminal action, to see that justice is done."

Every single recommendation has merit! Can’t wait until all nine of them are implemented, we shouldn’t be holding our breaths on the last one being implemented though, not until we heave Steve!
Yeah rite……………
Number six puts an animal in harms way, animal rights groups will have a hayday with that one
Heard on CBC news that some of these recommendations, in similar cases, have been made by coroners juries before, and that the feds have not implemented any of them, as yet. No great surprise there.

“The death has been classified as homicide” .. why isn’t anyone being brought up on charges then? Don’t they know who pulled the trigger? Funny how you heard from and the name of every cop that was questioned on the stand, except the “member” who actually pulled the trigger. Why are they protecting this person who, by the classification, committed murder?
3 kills while on duty..this cop is a Psycho…what more would ya expect with all the crap they send here…ACSC!! just my opinion………..
Huh, homicide is the killing of one person by another person. Greg was killed by another person, thus the classification.
In the Canadian justice system it does not mean or imply murder as it does in other jurisdictions around the world.
No matter how you slice it it’s a sad situation, maybe the so called cop is in bad shape, who knows ?? What about the brother he has not said a word.
The cop who pulled the trigger testfied in October, as did the brother.
The cop did not kill twice before, but was a member of an ERT while a shooting took place two other times, and therefore had to testify for those two as well.
I wonder what they meant by the one with the taser being “within striking distance of the axe”. To me that would be about arms length at the most. Hard to believe anyone would shoot if their partner is that close to the target.
“It doesn’t end here” says Tracy, “We will pursue whatever other avenues we can ,whether it be CIVIL or criminal action, to see that justice is done.”
I suspect that this whole affair will end with the family seeking $$ for compensation in some way.
