Watch out for pothole half way up inside westbound lane on Peden Hill– otherwise enjoy weekend.

what were all the police cars doing on 18th ave going in hurry to foothills tonight at around 845

Wondering if they are this desperate for volunteers?

Spring Break for the schools in 2015 will be from Feb. 16 to 27 because of the Games. You only have until Feb 25 of this year to have any input before the next school meeting for School District #57.

Good morning Prince George, hope you all have an awesome weekend!

Nice to hear from you taxi. How are things going over there?

Here’s a little link for Bill Gaal if he just happens to read this website:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/whitehorse-road-crews-race-to-clear-snow-months-early-1.2510734

Maybe he can take a clue.
Have a good safe weekend everyone.

Anyone know what’s with the sudden closing of the MrG and car wash at the foot of Peden Hill? That was my favourite car wash… :(
Something else going in there?

ok so here is to the city snow removal planners, there is a forecast of much more than 12 cm for next weekend
Are you ready???? or will it be waiting for the thaw to come for the best snow removal of the year

Predicting weather over a week away ?
Are you picking the Miami Dolphins to win the Super Bowl ?

Going into a Municipal election year, this would be a good time for those who are running or contemplating running to state their position on the proposed Performing Arts Centre.

This project will cost taxpayers somewhere in the area of $15/20 Million depending on the funding sources. Total cost guesstimates are around $50 Million,.

Seems at this time the City will try and get their portion accumulated through land sales, etc, which means they do not have to borrow money, therefore no Alternate Approval Process required.

Sooo. Looking at this huge expenditure, that once completed will have operating costs of approx. $400,000.00 per year, that the City will be responsible for, one would think that in would be a no brainer to have this issue go to a referendum in the fall election and have the issue settled once and for all.

The present thinking for those who support a PAC is that some 20/30 years ago there was a list compiled as to the priorities for projects in the City, Ie; Civic Centre, Swimming Pool, Library, CN Centre, Art Gallery, PAC.

The argument now is, is that all the other projects have been completed, and therefore it is time for the PAC. This of course is flawed thinking that only works for those in favour of a PAC. It does nothing for those who are against.

Soooo. Time to have this issue go to a referendum. We have sufficient time to get it in place, and put it on the ballot this fall.

Lets see if we have some Councillors that will support having the community at large make this spending decision.

@Tarnfeather, I heard it will be the newest Shooters liquor store. Lucky us….

What tricks will Harper and Clark play on us while attention is diverted by the Superbowl and then the Olympics?
I shudder.

What’s with drivers in PG lately. This past week, I’ve never seen so many near misses, so much speeding, so much anger. I got fingered and yelled at for doing 55 in a 50 the other day.

People need to just calm down and relax.

Hmmm…. hose the mud off the 4×4 and quad and grab a six pack at the pay window on the way out. Just might be a gold mine…

Was heading east on pulp mill road on wednesday at 5:15pm ish. I followed a cop doing 30km/h. He then pulled over to the shoulder. Myself and another car went by him. Then he flicked his lights on and turned into the oncoming lane and stopped all the people going home from the mills. Then I noticed a second cop parked in a driveway as I went by. They seemed to be waiting for someone. I kept going out to the pulp mills so I didn’t see what happened.

Anybody know what was going on?

A policeman is your friend? Better get Mythbusters to try and confirm that. As always when these misfortunes occur I take it upon myself to ask people to “Google up” Fred Quilt from Williams Lake. A policeman isn’t his “friend”. He wasn’t Fred’s friend. This will happen again. Watch your back. They are not like us. IMO. I emphasize that earnestly. In my cynical opinion.

Tarnfeather they could turn the carwash into a drivethrough liquor store, driving right inside. Visited one while in Australia while picking up some bubbly. Didn’t have to get out of my airconditioned car. Here stay in your nice warm car.

Ever notice that if you are going to make a left hand turn,. Say going West on 1st Avenue onto George St. That quite often the oncoming traffic is coming at you 20k over the speed limit. So if they are two blocks away and travelling the speed limit you have plenty of time to make the turn, however if they are speeding they are on you before you complete the turn, and leaning on their horn,.

These idiots cannot seem to grasp he fact that it is their speeding that causes the problem, not the person making the turn.

The lack of knowledge about the rules of the road, and the overall driving skills of people in Prince George are pretty scary.

How do you like the price of diesel fuel in this city? Wonderful that everyone is on the same page for the price. Great for tourism isn’t it? Looks like Costco will be the only one to bring the price down.

Yes Pal, your inability to judge speed & distance is very scary.

If a vehicle traveling at 70 kmh is “on you” before you turn across two lanes on to George St. you’re doing something wrong. Seriously, are you pushing your car or what?

70 khm is approximately 20 meters per second. Quebec to George is about 240 meters (according to google maps). It takes you 12 seconds to turn?

Recently even when you think you have figured out the turn VS oncoming traffic road conditions have added whole new factors into the mix. If you want to see “barreling” traffic, check out Ospika.

X2 Harbinger.

Even with the weather we had in PG this January we did not set a record for the monthly average mean temperature… go figure, on to the next prediction…

Yeah, I cant believe people in this town.Just like ants, throw a snow ball in front of them and they all start whining, no snow and all is forgotten?

What steps would you take to improve snow removal?

Buy more graders
21.7%

Train more workers to operate graders
22.4%

Hire more staff
40.1%

Pay contractors a retainer to ensure availability
15.9%

How about this;
utilize the people that you have and hold them accountable for there lack of performance and/or planning.
– lets see, 850 km of roads to maintain.
-9 pieces of equipment.Well lets do some basic math..Holy! that works out to 12km an hour if all the equipment was working. So I think clearing the city is achievable within a week. Or am I wrong?

slinky states; “Even with the weather we had in PG this January we did not set a record for the monthly average mean temperature… go figure, on to the next prediction…”

Firstly; I am flattered that you carry me around in your mind so often slinky ;-)

Secondly; the Month of January isn’t even over, although I must admit the temperatures yesterday and today are more in line with the historic averages for January.

But that leaves all of the rest of the days this January being above the average historic temperatures, lets wait and see shall we?

Have to laugh………:)
BC government to change Liquor rules- 73 recommendations to liquor policy review and in the same day……..Rob Ford is in Vancouver………go figure lol

Why is Rob Ford in Vancouver anyway?

I wonder how Rob Ford would do if he ran for Mayor of Prince George this year? Couldn’t do worse than the current crew.

Funeral. Mother of a friend or something like that.

I do not know who looks after the Connaught Youth center on 17th ,just to let you know there are people jumping off the roof and a man taking pictures across the street.

Here in Abby Csstco gas is at $1.12 and Super store is at $1.15 as all the other outlets.

So stop dreaming that Costco will be your salvation when it comes to diesel fuel. Their fuel will be lower untill they have sucked you in and then their fuel will be the same price or a couple of pennies less.

So you guys and gals have a nice weekend up there in George. Tempertures here have been anywhere from 6 to +10. and get Pal to set you up a nice taxpayers association and tell those guys at city Hall to kiss you know where.
Cheers

As usual a number of people who post here missed the point.

The point is the speed limit on 1st Avenue is 50k. If the **goof** in the oncoming lane is doing 70k or more then

1. He is breaking the law.

2. He is getting to the intersection must faster than one would expect if he was doing the speed limit.

3. Your ability to judge speed and distance has little to do with the issue, because the issue is about lame brains, who speed against traffic, and feel compelled to lean on their horn if someone turns in front of them, and forces them to slow down.

4. My ability to judge speed and distance is good, and I therefore make the turn with the intent to lean on it if necessary, however the idiots coming toward me think I should sit there all day while they speed.

Have a nice day.

We got the point, you’re a terrible driver. :)

Kidding aside, there is an inordinate number of bad drivers in this city. However, since licenses are revenue generators for the government I don’t see them tightening up the licensing requirements any time soon.

People you keep forgetting about the weather back east. People so there was no climate change before Mann is that correct?

Can somebody yell me why we are still paying for for those ex liberal senators if they no longer represent the liberal party in the Senate but are still members of the liberal party? I think we have a new prince of pot.

Maverick, I don’t know where you got your information, but the last figure is saw quoted by the city was that we have over 1400 Lane KMs of road to clear. Not the 850 that you quoted. So using your logic, it closer to 10 days rather than a week. The only real cure is to have more equipment and more operators available. If we go that route don’t bitch about paying higher taxes, because there is not a lot slough in the budget elsewhere…unless of course you want to cut back on policing, fire protection or city public works!

Keystone pipeline gets yet another environmental pass. The big O is going being forced to man up soon.

To the idiot that works for YRB who pulled out on a red light into the traffic going north on the hart this morning and then proceeded to stop in the middle of the Hart highway for no apparent reason, you should have your license revoked. You almost caused a 3 car pile up. People didn’t know if they were supposed to stop or go around or what.

@NyteHawwk
or cutback on china trips with everyone and their dog or 30 million dollar cop shops, or 40 million dollar pacs. Theres a lot of places that can be cut back on without it coming out of the infrastructure monies.

NyteHawwk

Buying more equipment and hiring people that you cannot lay off is not smart use of tax dollars. A good used grader can cost 750K and each worker adds 100K all in with wages and benefits. For what? the 10 or 12 days a year when we get a big dump. Factor capital cost, depreciation etc and it is a very expensive way to clear streets. Perhaps Gaal could put a weather app on his phone and have the equipment on the street when the first flake falls if a major dump is forecast. The sooner you start the easier it is to keep up.the policy to wait till there is 12cm on the ground is misguided even idiotic when it is really coming down.

850km is what I read on the cities web page.I like ewitts logic,Like I stated utilize employees time and better planning is what we need. More equipment and operators isn’t going to make any difference when there is no plan in place.

Way to go Chucky!

One good thing about ego driven blogs. They have a short shelf life, and become very boring, very fast.

850 k but don’t forget the roads do not get just one pass. My road gets at least 4 passes before finished. The loaders then do a lot of manuvering while clearing driveways. Just saying about the mileage.

That being said the sidewalk out front finally got plowed and sanded since the big snow fall. I have noticed during this time the sidewalks on university way and Tyner get done between snowflakes.
