Did You Get Caught?

Citizens on Patrol volunteers, Blake Hines, Eric Rockwell and Kyall Nelson operating a speed reader board

Prince George, B.C.- They're  on the job,  volunteering to  assist the Prince George RCMP  in proactive  crime  prevention  efforts.

They are the Citizens on Patrol, and  they were very busy yesterday on  First Avenue, where they  had a Speed Watch board  set up just west of the Yellowhead Bridge.

Drivers who ignored the 50 km per hour speed warning may have found themselves pulled over by the Prince George RCMP's Traffic Services Section.  Over a short period of time, eight drivers were issued violation tickets for speeding contrary to the BC Motor Vehicle Act.  Other violators may find a warning letter coming in the mail explaining the conduct observed.

The Prince George RCMP's Community Policing Section has mailed hundreds of warnings to registered owners of vehicles observed in these operations over the last year.

Citizens on Patrol volunteers worked with Prince George RCMP in crime prevention  efforts such as Speed Watch, Cell Watch and community patrols last year,  and those educational and enforcement actions continue in 2014.

"Community Policing will continue our proactive approach in 2014 with an increase in educational enforcement" says Corporal Thor Forseth, in charge of the section.

"Over the last year Citizens on Patrol contributed 1,324 hours, over 37 speed watch operations; checking a total of 10,977 vehicles with 1,289 of those vehicles speeding", says Citizens on Patrol Volunteer Assistant Coordinator Melissa Lang.

come sit on Tabor Blvd., some weekend, it is a regualar drag strip, but once the snow goes….IT IS EVEN WORSE

I have another suggestion. Concentrate on school and playground zones. They seem to be ignored by a lot of drivers. However, it is good to see young people getting involved in assisting the police for better driving habits of the whole. Congratulations to you fellows!

Try Cameron street bridge for people heading into the traffic circle..

Oh yes, a warning letter will certainly make people slow down.

Highway 16 and 97 intersection – 58 crashes per year. Highway 16 and Domano – 46 crashes in a year. Yup, lets focus on important stuff, like someone going ten over on First avenue. That will make us all safer
*eyeroll*

50k speed limit on 3rd avenue..ya right way to darn fast. 50k on foothills and first avenue…really.

Give them guns.

Put them on the payroll and give them the ability to issue fines to cost recover their salary. (works well in Alberta)

50kph on 1st avenue is a kind of a joke for the most part – I’ve never been behind a police car on that street in the past couple of decades that has ever gone below 60 while I was following. That said, maybe I should have feared for my life because of their rampant speeding (hold up ‘sarcasm’ sign here).

Want some respect Citizens on Patrol? Do this in school zones and other real problems roads – and then make the news with that. This just leaves a bad taste of ‘speed trap’.

definition of Maximum – … 2. an upper limit allowed by law or regulation. (Websters)

When did it occur in our society that the norm is to ignore the law when deemed appropriate by the individual? If the law is wrong, change the law. Otherwise, be prepared to pay up when “caught” in the “trap”.

Busybodies.

So, I drove along 5th this morning from downtown and turned right at Tabor. I was following a City garbage truck which also turned right at Tabor.

The light was red on Tabor. It had not just turned red. There was no traffic on Tabor crossing 5th, The City garbage truck turned right without stopping, slowing down to about 20kph for the turn.

Since I was for some weird reason under the impression that a red light was the same as a stop sign: come to a complete stop; look to see if you can safely make the right turn; then start up again and make the turn.

But hey, I suppose because it says City of Prince George on the doors of the vehicle, the drivers think they own the City and make the rules.

BAD!!!!!

I suggest people use those reader board, sit away from the lights, and press a button each time they see someone make a right hand turn without stopping, then the reader board will say:

“You failed to stop before you turned … fine is $120” or whatever it is.

It is actually going through a red light.

Thank you for the automatic speed indicator. They are the best thing that has been introduced to slow me down.

My intentions are not to speed. But the foot can be heavy on its own. But these speed indicators make me aware of what I am doing, and yes it does get me to slow down. Nothing really is that much of an emergency, to get a fine, or injure someone because of time.

I think if your caught speeding after one of these speed indicators, one should have their fines doubled, for being that arrogant.

Is there a site we can report cell phone users while driving? I saw a guy talking on his cell, obviously ignorant to his surroundings & he went thru a red light. Damn good thing no one was coming the other way or a pedestrian wasn’t crossing the street.

There is a number that you can phone to call in a cell phone user behind a wheel.

Just make sure you are behind the vehicle you are reporting in so that you can get the license number accurately……

Maybe the guy in front of you on his phone is reporting on you for being on your phone. Could happen.

I think its time to be realistic on some of these roads with the speed limit. I don’t see having 60km/h too fast on the main drag on 1st ave. Theres no school’s near there not that much walking traffic that I have ever seen there.

And don’t give me that if they set it to 60 people will just do 70 story. Most people drive to the flow of traffic. People who speed are going to speed no matter what the limit is. Some of the speed limits are too slow and I think some are too fast. 50km/h on some down town streets where it is very busy with alot of people walking around might be too fast some times. maybe 45km/h or what not.

I think foot hills speed limit is too slow being its a divided 4 lane road.

People will always complain if someone is breaking the law reguardless.

Anyhow. I am sure I’ll get flamed but thats how I see some (but not all) speed limits around the city.
