Cougars Warriors Preview
The Prince George Cougars have been on the road for nine days and tonight they'll kick off the home stretch of their Eastern road swing when they tangle with the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place. After a dismal start to their road trip the Prince George Cougars have bounced back with two straight victories against the Prince Albert Raiders and Saskatoon Blades. Now the Cougars will look to secure their third straight win for the first time all season against a Moose Jaw Warriors team that has lost seven straight games.
OVERVIEW:
Mike Stothers' Moose Jaw Warriors have had a tough go of it this season. With a record of 13-29-3-5, the Warriors sit 10th in the Eastern Conference and fourth in the East Division two points in front of the Saskatoon Blades. The Warriors are 0-5-0-2 in their past seven games and have scored the second fewest amount of goals in the entire WHL. All of that said the Warriors have some top-level talent and will have plenty of motivation in front of them tonight against Prince George.
WHO'S UP FRONT:
At the age of 15, the WHL knew that Braydon Point would be a star. He dazzled during the 2011-2012 playoffs where he tallied seven goals and 10 points as an underager, and this season he has been a huge offensive bright spot for a Warriors team that again has struggled to score. Point has 22 goals and 50 points through 50 games this season and is a lock to be drafted in June of 2014 by an NHL team.
WHO'S ON D:
Former Prince George Cougars captain Jesse Forsberg was traded to Moose Jaw earlier this season and has had the fortune of spending his final WHL season in Saskatchewan. This season Forsberg has provided a little bit of everything for Moose Jaw: 3 goals, 19 points and over 100 penalty minutes on the season. Knowing that this will be his final game ever against the Prince George Cougars should help provide a further spark to Forsberg's game here tonight.
WHO'S IN GOAL:
The goaltending tandem of Justin Paulic and Zach Sawchenko usually gives Moose Jaw a decent shot at winning. This season the 18-year-old Paulic is 8-22-3-5 with an ,889 save percentage.16-year-old Zach Sawchenko has dressed in 14 games this season and has compiled a nice record of 5-7.
X-FACTOR:
Losing is never fun, and the fact that Moose Jaw has gone seven games without a win should be more than enough incentive by itself. Tonight at home it will be important for the Warriors to be physical and opportunistic with their chances. When teams struggle to score it often requires a simple approach to get out of a funk.
OVERVIEW:
Mark Holick's Prince George Cougars will play their 54th game of the season tonight in Moose Jaw. A win tonight for Prince George would match their win total from a season ago and would also give them their longest winning streak of the season (three). The Cougars haven't exactly won pretty very often this season, but at the end of the day it's wins that count. Tonight they'll look to take advantage of a struggling Moose Jaw Warriors club while hoping that Edmonton can knock off Tri-City.
WHO'S UP FRONT:
Wednesday night in Saskatoon both Jansen Harkins and Brad Morrison showed why they were both so highly thought of during the first round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Brad Morrison led all scorers with a goal and three assists while Harkins chipped in with two goals and an assist. Harkins' second goal of the game was an end-to-end thriller that ultimately put the Blades away for good. Harkins has six goals in his past three games and 11 points in 11 games.
WHO'S ON D:
What a thrill it must have been on Wednesday for rookie defenceman Tate Olson who tallied a goal and two assists in his hometown of Saskatoon. Olson now has two goals and seven points on the season, but the most impressive thing about Olson is the fact that he continues to get better at both ends and seems to really be thriving since returning from World Under-17s. Hopefully tonight Olson can build off of what has largely been a solid road trip for him through Saskatchewan.
WHO'S IN GOAL:
With a record of 15-15-1-4, Ty Edmodns continues to give the Cougars a chance to win on a nightly basis. His stats as of late have not been very good, but yet he continues to win games for his team in goal. Hopefully tonight Edmonds can build off of the confidence that comes from winning, and maybe even gain some more while facing a Moose Jaw team with some offensive issues.
X-FACTOR:
The obvious glaring X-Factor for the Prince George Cougars tonight is Todd Fiddler. Traded to the Moose Jaw Warriors in the summer of 2013, Todd Fiddler was going to finish his WHL career in his home province. But 14 games into his tenure with Moose Jaw he parted ways with the organization. In 14 games with the Warriors he had two goals and 10 points. Since joining the Prince George Cougars Fiddler has responded with 29 goals and 55 points in just 33 games. Tonight's game is a huge one for the Cougars for a number of different reasosn, but you know that the Cougars would love to help Fiddler have a big night against his former squad.
