Groundhogs Divided on Winter Prediction

Sunday, February 2, 2014 @ 9:09 AM

Prince George, B.C. – It appears predicting how long this winter is going to last is much like predicting the winner of today’s Super Bowl game.

It’s just too close to call.

Groundhogs in various parts of North America are just about evenly split when it comes to predicting how much longer winter will last.  Wiarton Willie,

Punxsutawney Phil and a groundhog named Chuck on Staten Island, New York all saw their shadows when they popped their heads out of their winter dens this morning.  And that indicates another six weeks of winter.

However, Willow in Winnipeg, Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia and General Beauregard Lee in Georgia emerged to find cloudy skies, which according to the lore means an early Spring.  So take your pick.

All we know here at home is that it’s going to be pretty darned cold this week.  The forecast is:

Today:  Mainly cloudy, a 30% chance of flurries.  High minus 13.

Tonight:  Clearing this evening.  Wind from the north at 20 km/h.  Low minus 20 with a wind chill of minus 29 and the risk of frostbite.

Monday:  Sunny with northerly winds at 30 km/h.  High minus 14 but with a wind chill of minus 33 during the day.  Overnight low minus 23.

Tuesday:  Sunny with a high of minus 15, low minus 28.

Wednesday:  Sunny.  High minus 16, low minus 24.

Thursday:  Sunny.  High minus 16, low minus 30.

Friday:  Sunny.  High minus 16, low minus 27.

Saturday:  Mix of sun and cloud and a 60% chance of flurries.  High minus 16.

As far as the Super Bowl goes, GO SEAHAWKS!

Don’t think we up here can really depend on what happens in Pennsylvania or Ontario. Winter here will probably end around the end of March, like usual.

I stuck my bare foot out the patio door yesterday, Feb 1. It was kind cold, but normal for this time of year.

I do that every year, and so far I have been right 10 times out of 10.

Based on that, I am predicting we will have 31 days of weather in August.

Nice that we are finally getting winter!

As for the superbowl… who cares? I will, however, be inviting the Canucks to my funeral as pallbearers, that way they can let me down one last time!

So, Wiarton Willie, Punxsutawney Phil and numerous other groundhogs have made their predictions this morning. Has anybody heard yet what our local groundhog, People#1 had to say this morning, haha??

Sorry People#1, I really had no choice today. I just had to do this!!

Darn it People#1, I was hoping to post my comment before you popped up!!

“Don’t think we up here can really depend on what happens in Pennsylvania or Ontario”

Agreed. Weather predicting groundhogs are really only reliable in this part of the continent.

That’s OK Hart Gal, everyone here knows why you shadow, and obsess, over me! So what’s it like having me live inside your head?

The local groundhog peeked his head out and has no prediction about when there is going to be a change of polls. Maybe by the end of April?

Hey Peeps, I just love trying to knock you off of your pedestal once in a while, haha! Tough job, but what the heck, somebody’s got to do it! Besides, it’s a lot of fun! Now, go back into your den and come back out again in six weeks!! ;-) !!

By the way, “Peeps” is the new nickname that my sister Hart Gal came up with for you! I hope it sticks!!

Peeps! Peeps! Peeps!!

Dang, why did it have to see its shadow?

Just filled up with diesel yesterday and I think they switched over to summer diesel or something, this weather is making the fuel gel up and plug the filter. We are now below the average of -3 high and -11 low, and the last few days we haven’t even hit the average low

California is facing it’s worst water crisis in history!

Interesting how we are using millions of gallons of fresh water mixed with gas companies special cocktail of toxic chemicals to frack at each gas well.

I cannot believe the idiots we put in charge of our province are not interested in preserving our water and exporting it, at great profit, to California.

With global warming there will be more droughts and increased demand for our water world wide!

not sure people #1 but I thought I read somewhere that if the states needs our water we are obligated to give them some?

Uh, we do not have a monopoly on water that I’m aware of.

As for groundhogs, humans have some pretty ridiculous traditions, and this has to be near to the top of the list.

People#1; “I cannot believe the idiots we put in charge of our province are not interested in preserving our water and exporting it, at great profit, to California.” Uh…are you being sarcastic?
Over the years there have been numerous interests in sending our water south, all of which would have devastating impact to our environment. As a proponent of global warming, surely you can see the effect this would have on our ecosystems.

Seeing how Peeps-did you mean that sickly yellow glob that appears once a year on store shelves and has no real substance but is simply a bit of glucose puffed up with a lot of hot air Hart Guy?- always sticks to the subject matter of the story it must mean the libs/conserves are responsible for a groundhog either seeing or not seeing it’s shadow depending on location.

Funny I saw no mention of water exports or California when I read the story.

It would seem bottled water is included in NAFTA but not the “bulk” sale of our water.

“The Times article quotes Barlow of the Council of Canadians as saying, “I don’t think the United States is going to send up an army to take our water. I don’t think they have to.” What Barlow means is that under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement, Canadian bulk water may already be subject to continental exploitation, and unless Canada acts firmly and forcefully it almost certainly will be. Canadian bottled water already is included in NAFTA. The difference between a litre of bottled water and a supertanker of bulk water may turn out to be merely a matter of size and semantics.”

@ detoe43; My main point was the waste of millions of gallons of fresh water used to frack at each gas well. We should be preserving it and selling it.

@etwitt; there was no more discussion on the groundhog story, but now we have plenty of discussion going on this subject. You are right, I should not have posted on a different subject, and just let this discussion thread die! ;-)

Ewitt, glad to see that “Peeps” is catching on, haha!

Nice of you to point out how some Peeps change the topic, while criticizing others for doing the same things! Hey Peeps, bet you’re thinking that “Facts and Truths” suck, especially when they are about you!!

By the way, Maude Barlow is another one of those privileged people like David Suzuki, Al Gore and now Neil Young, people who consume massive amounts of fossil fuels flying all over the planet, contributing far more than their fair share of global warming green house gases while at the same time telling the rest of us to cut our own carbon footprints.

Peeps goes on and on and on about global warming, yet holds these people out as both experts and heroes! I don’t buy into their self-entitled crap! Do as I say, not as I do?? How about Walk the walk and talk the talk?? Hypocrites!!

“under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement, Canadian bulk water may already be subject to continental exploitation”

Ever hear of the Columbia River Treaty?
