Cougars Earn Fourth Straight Win.
For the first time since the 2010-2011 season, the Prince George Cougars have won four straight games. Saturday night in Swift Current the Prince George Cougars got two goals each from Troy Bourke and Klarc Wilson, plus 38 saves from Adam Beukeboom en route to a 6-2 victory over the Swift Current Broncos.
After rattling off victories against Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw, the Cougars headed to Swift Current for the final game of their six-game eastern road trip and were rudely greeted by a hungry Swift Current team that dominated the early minutes.
Colby Cave opened the scoring for Swift Current just 1:40 into the game, and from there they continued their offensive onslaught. Halfway through the period the Broncos were outshooting the Cougars 12-3, and goaltender Adam Beukeboom had to make several tough saves to keep his team within one.
Right before the mid-way point of the period the Cougars tied the game off a two-on-one rush. Todd Fiddler took the Broncos defenceman wide, then centered a pass across the ice to Troy Bourke who beat Eetu Laurikainen for his 18th goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later the Cougars took the lead on a power play. Todd Fiddler threw a pass across the ice to Klarc Wilson who knocked the puck home right as the first of two Swift Current penalties had expired. Wilson’s 21st of the season gave the Cougars a lead that they would never surrender.
Late in the period Zach Pochiro extended the Cougars lead thanks to some great work from his linemates Brett Roulston and Aaron Macklin. Roulston started the play by throwing a puck towards the goal from the left wing boards. Macklin charged hard at the net, and got a piece of the puck which Laurikainen stopped, but Zach Pochiro followed up on the rebound and knocked it in for his 21st.
Eetu Laurikainen was subsequently pulled from the game in favor of Swift Current backup goaltender Landon Bow.
Swift Current quickly responded when Nathan Burns knocked home his own rebound to give him 20 on the season, but that would be the final goal scored by the Broncos on this particular night.
In total, the Broncos peppered Adam Beukeboom with 22 shots in the first period, but the 19-year-old stopped 20 of them and the Cougars had a 3-2 lead after the first period.
The next goal of the night came with just 1.9 seconds remaining in the second period. With six seconds left in the period the Cougars had an offensive face off in the Broncos zone. Jordan Tkatch won the draw back to Marc McNulty who quickly fired his shot through traffic. Bow made the initial save, but the rebound came right out to Troy Bourke who slid it home for his 19th of the season and his second goal of the game to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead through 40 minutes.
Jordan Tkatch and Klarc Wilson would add goals in the third period to seal the deal for the Cougars who improved their trip record to 4-2 and their season record to 22-26-2-5.
Despite being outshot 40-30, the Cougars were the more opportunistic team converting on one of their four power plays while the Broncos went zero-for-five.
Unfortunately for the Cougars they are still six points back of eighth place thanks to Tri-City’s win in Red Deer. But the Cougars will return to action at home next weekend when they welcome Red Deer for back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday.
