Make it Six! Cougars Win 7-1 Over Red Deer.
Make it six straight wins for the Prince George Cougars! Saturday night at the CN Centre, Brad Morrison, Troy Bourke and Todd Fiddler each had two goals while Jordan Tkatch added four assists, and the Prince George Cougars earned a 7-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels to secure their sixth straight victory. Adam Beukeboom stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced in goal to earn his third straight win between the pipes.
After one period the Cougars led 1-0 but it wasn’t for a lack of chances. Prince George outshot Red Deer 16-6, but Rebels netminder Patrik Bartosak held his team in the game early. His best save came in the opening minutes as he robbed Joseph Carvalho from in close.
Troy Bourke opened the scoring for the Cougars at 11:55 of the period to become the fourth Cougar forward to hit the 20-goal mark in 2013-2014.
Prince George would add three more in the second, and all three would come in the back half of the period. First it was Zach Pochiro, charging hard to the net, who tapped home a Brett Roulston pass for his 22nd. Brad Morrison then followed up with a beautiful breakaway finish to notch his eighth. Todd Fiddler then rounded out the scoring in the second with a beautiful shorthanded breakaway goal at the 19:33 mark of the second.
After two periods the Cougars were outshooting Red Deer 30-10.
26 seconds into the third, Red Deer got on the board when Aspen Sterzer tipped home a Conner Bleackley pass for his 25th. But back came the Cougars with three more unanswered goals.
First, Troy Bourke cut past the defence and deked out goaltender Taz Burman (who replaced Bartosak to star the third) for his second of the game and 21st of the season. Brad Morrison and Todd Fiddler then added goals in the late stages of the game to secure the 7-1 victory for the home team.
Troy Bourke and Jordan Tkatch each finished with four point games while Martin Bobos, Todd Fiddler, and Brad Morrison also had multi-point games.
Prince George finished one-for-four on the power play while Red Deer finished zero-for-three on their chances. The final shots were: 38-18 for Prince George.
With the victory, the Cougars improve their record to 24-26-2-5, and are now just two points shy of the Tri-City Americans for that final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Next up, a very tough test, as the Portland Winterhawks come to town for two games starting Monday afternoon at the CN Centre. Can the Cougars extend their winning streak to seven games? Find out on Monday afternoon during Family Day at the CN Centre.
