Vanderhoof, BC – No one was injured, but the CN rail line is closed west of Vanderhoof after two trains collided earlier this afternoon…
CN's Public Affairs Regional Manager, Emily Hamer, says one CN train struck the tail-end of another at approximately 1pm this afternoon. The 'rear-ender' caused the derailment of one locomotive and eight intermodal cars, but they remained upright.
"No CN crew members were injured and there were no dangerous goods involved," says Hamer. She says both trains were westbound when the collision occurred about eight-kilometres west of Vanderhoof.
The rail line is closed and Hamer says no estimate is available on when it will re-open. Crews are on-scene and an excavator is en route.

So two trains going the same direction (west) and one tail-ends the other… guess it’s just a matter of time before we have a head-on train wreck.
With all this increased rail traffic, does CN know whether it’s trains are coming or going?
So you’re going to blame CN when perhaps you should be blaming the crew for not paying attention?
Do either one of you know what went wrong?
CN runs the rail road not the crew, less eyes less workers longer hours even less safety measures
Campbells Gov’t sold BCR to CN, and the first thing CN did was either lay off most of the Track repair crew, or pension them off. Sound familiar to you??? So now the tracks are falling apart, just wait there’s a big derailment in CN’s future.
I just feel it!
Who’s driving the train? One would assume that it was a highly trained and very well paid unionized crew. Kinda reminds me of the unionized crew sinking the Queen of the North after running it into a very very large island!
Unionized? Non-unionized? I probably shouldn’t go there! Instead, I think I’ll just chock this one up to “S**t happens!
Glad no one was hurt!
Steph99, CN doesn’t operate those trains. The crews do.
heyyy come on guys… He was tail gating.. Of course your gonna hit the car in front of ya if your texting or distracted :) (where was the squad who was doing the distracted driving thing this weekend???)
So 2 trains going back to back down the rail. Wonder why there are no moose left.
Musta been a non union crew, most are un train able.
Stillsmokin, perhaps they didn’t hear that ICBC and the RCMP were cracking down on distracted driving during the month of February?
Uturn, the tracks still belong to the people of BC, maybe CN will sue you for not taking care of your track…
this is how many off rail excurions for CN over the last while….
and we are supposed to embrace the idea of them transporting crude oil from Alberta to our coast ? ? ? ? ?
can’t see me ever doing that….
“The tracks still belong to the people of BC.” Slinky, since when has the CN Nechako sub belonged to the people of BC ?
Before we pre-maturely blame the train crew, maybe we should pre-maturely blame the Rail Traffic Controller as well ?
The tracks that ‘belonged’ to BC Rail still belong to BC, none of the actual rail beds were sold because of the BCR backlash.
Yes Slinky, but that does not pertain to this track. To me, west of Vanderhoof is probably still the CN Nechako Sub. Has been since about 1914.
BCR Tracks run north and south. The tracks in question have not to do with the former BCR
Yes middlefinger but was in reply to post %5 – Uturn, “BCR (was sold to) to CN, and the first thing CN did was either lay off most of the Track repair crew, or pension them off”.
The BCR track crew did not maintain this portion of track, and the portion they did maintain still belongs to the people of BC.
“So now the tracks are falling apart, just wait there’s a big derailment in CN’s future. “
This shows that the writer is talking about the portions maintained by these crews that were laid off or pensioned off.
How does a train rear ending another train have anything to do with track maintenance?
It’s so funny how tunnel visioned so many people become. I went to an open house for a natural gas pipeline last year and there was a lady there asking about what would happen if there was a spill.
Pipeline Rep: “it’s natural gas”
Lady: “but what happens if there is a spill?”
Rep: “it’s natural gas… It doesn’t spill”
Lady: “but who will clean it up?”
Unfortunately that is the state of knowledge among many these days. I find that most arguments against any big employer in this country are like that.
