Interactive Air Quality Kiosk Opens To Public

Wednesday, February 12, 2014 @ 12:31 PM

Prince George, B.C. – As part of its perpetual program aimed at environmental improvement in Prince George, Canfor officials today unveiled a new interactive air quality kiosk at Exploration Place.

It’s a real time display that takes air quality data from a monitor atop the roof of the facility and provides the user with information about five distinct areas regarding the Prince George airshed.  The President of Canfor Pulp, Brett Robinson, outlined how the company, its unions and the workers in the mills answered the challenge to come up with ideas to make substantial improvements to the air the community breathes each and every day.  He outlined how the expenditure of more than $180 million helped the company achieve the environmental improvement goals it had set out in its five-year plan.  And he called the level of support from Prince George city council and the community as a whole “amazing.”

Martin Pudlas, Vice President of Operations, Canfor Pulp Products, says there was a time years ago when mistrust existed about Canfor’s commitment to clean environment within the city.  However, he noted a 90% reduction in the odour emanating from the Prince George Pulp mill plus a 60% reduction in particulates at Northwood.

The hands-on, touch screen display at Exploration Place is very user-friendly and is there to provide the public with information at any time.

Nice to see the improvement to the air quality,.

Seems to me that $122 Million of this money came from the Federal Government.

Just saying…..

It could have been spent on energy reduction projects that would have helped the bottom line. Just saying.

The funds came from the feds through the stimulus spending promised in 2009. It not only improved air quality but also helped the bottom line.

The NW RB upgrade installed a brand new precip to clean the exhaust air but also upgraded the boiler itself and improved the liquor system. That created more steam and better BTU’s out of the liquor.

The RB previously had been holding NW back.

NW hit pulp production records all through 2012 after the project finished in late 2011.

I sure hope Canfor’s investors are enjoying the benefits of those tax dollars, oops! I meant production records,

Great news, a reduction in particulate matter. A real good news story.

Now if the other major offender could reduce their toxic spew we’d be golden.

The air is a lot cleaner! In contrast to other wasted tax payers’ money this money wasn’t wasted.

Unless this upgrade helped reduce road dust and wood smoke, I’d say any impact on AQ was purely coincidental ;)

ohhh cool…. Kids would enjoy this as a learning tool…

Shouldn’t the “new interactive air quality kiosk” be out in the middle of our fresh air park, rather than in an environmentally controlled, air conditioned and humidified or dehumidified building? Learning tool? As if, eh? For easily brainwashed children. Get them early.

from the story “It’s a real time display that takes air quality data from a monitor atop the roof of the facility”
just in case ya missed it there Harb ;)

Shhh … the odor is now hidden….why do you think ppl are dying from cancer in this town

As far as I understand, and has been in one way or another mentioned above, the money was able to be provided by the federal government because the USA “subsidized” its mills to reduce pollution.

Strictly speaking that was not allowed under NAFTA. Canada showed its colours by going tit for tat and doing the same for mills in Canada.

I believe the Canfor thrust was on further reduction in sulphur based emissions which are, at that level, not particularly health concerns but our sense of smell happens to be sensitive to those smells. At the same time particulates were also reduced.

I am surprised that the federal program did not require such activities in the airshed as this project AND the inclusion of acknowledgement of the participation of the federal grants including the percentage they provided for the upgrades.

I believe there were no upgrades done to the Northwood plant now under Canfor control.

Mea culpa ….. northwood plant did get some money from the feds as well after the original money was given….. just over a cool 100 million bucks to upgrade boilers to reduce sulphur emissions by up to 70%

Has anyone heard from PACHA lately? Seem to have gone underground.

For those who have an interesting thing in following these types of projects over time, you might be interested in going back in time almost 3 years to see what was promised to be done ….

“a 60% reduction in particulates at Northwood” is claimed ….. I wonder how that translates to a reduction at the exploration place monitors.

Never enough details to provide any real meaning to what happened. Mostly chest pounding spin instead of consistent, real scientific evaluations.
