Police Hunt Jewelry Thieves

Tuesday, February 18, 2014 @ 4:52 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Police in Prince George are making the investigation of the weekend break, enter and theft at a Pine Centre Mall jewelry store a priority.

At 3:35 Saturday morning a stolen 1995 red Jeep Cherokee with a roof rack was driven through a set of rear doors of the mall, down a hallway and through the secured gate at Paris Jewellers.  Several people wearing dark clothing with their faces covered jumped out of the jeep, took an undisclosed amount of jewelry from the store and got back in the vehicle, which then fled the scene.

While the RCMP won't’ divulge specific resources they put to any investigation, Media Liaison Officer Cpl. Craig Douglass does say “it definitely is a priority for the detachment.  We have made adjustments to our plans over the weekend to focus on this, and continue to investigate with the hope we locate these individuals.”  He says to this point the stolen Jeep, bearing BC licence plate XAR353 at the time, has not found.

Cpl. Douglass says while there was some planning that went into the incident, “I don’t think there’s too high a level of sophistication here.  I have seen this same thing in different communities as well as in Prince George.  We’re talking about the sophistication to steal a car and basically ram through some doors.  It certainly had to be planned, and they definitely targeted this business, but I don’t think it takes a whole lot of grey matter to do this.”    He agrees that the thieves must have completed the theft in a short period of time as alarms would have gone off the moment the jeep went through the exterior mall door.  “Definitely it was a swift crime, it was very quick,” he says.

Cpl Douglass says there is video surveillance footage of the incident and investigators are going over that to pick out any information that might be available.  He also says efforts continue to find the stolen jeep that was used to transport the thieves.

Regarding the stolen jewelry Cpl. Douglass says the monetary value of it has not been determined.  As far as anyone trying to unload the loot he says “other detachments and police organization probably throughout the province are aware that this has occurred.  And locally pawn shops are aware and with a bylaw in place that stuff is reported to us so it makes it more difficult for somebody to get rid of this stuff.”

Cpl. Douglass says police would certainly like to hear right away from anyone who was approached on the street to buy a piece of jewelry.

Don’t worry RCMP… there long gone !

*they’re

I don’t think it takes a whole lot of grey matter to do this.”

Should be easy to catch then !

Get mantracker to help get the “stuff”.

I think this looks so unsophisticated because they are not stealing $20million dollar DaVincis from le Louvre …. one can just steal a heavy car, drive through, grab whatever one can in 3 minutes or less and drive out before security reports to an alarm.

It does take some guts. Who on this board would have that?

Throughout the province? What about Alberta or Saskatchewan.

I bet it’s already melted down!

Was there a diversion call to 911 before they struck? The phone would probably be a throw away??

Too bad the little guy doesn’t get this kind kind of help from the police when his or her house is broken in to.

Mad.

Whether it’s at a retail store or someone’s house, theft causes insurance rates to go up and we all pay. In the case of stores, they build the cost of loss through theft in their pricing. Thanks, thieves.

…”And locally pawnshops are aware…..? “So if ya wanna wait I know a guy who knows a lot about jewelry”. Ha ha ha .

Where were the security guards????

The goods and the thieves are long gone, no doubt down south. Three minutes maximum in and out. This was a “cased” job, very well planned and executed. Alarm delay time 45 seconds maximum, but doubtful an alarm was even triggered. Contrary to the police down playing the planning and sophistication of this job, it’s laughable. This was a well done job, just about shift change for the RCMP (3:45 A.M.). This stuff won’t be fenced locally, it will be taken down south or into Alberta for disposal.

Craiglist is a good start to investigate

No security camera footage or pictures?

Craigslist… yeah right.

But!
” Several people wearing dark clothing with their faces covered jumped out of the jeep, took an undisclosed amount of jewelry from the store and got back in the vehicle, which then fled the scene.”

I guessed you missed that part JB!

No, I didn’t miss it, but thanks. Sometimes the RCMP releases the video/pictures to the public.
