Prince George, BC – Prince George RCMP Superintendent Eric Stubbs will highlight the successes and challenges of policing the city in 2013 when he appears before City Councillors tonight…

In preparing his annual written report for the City, Superintendent Stubbs says overall calls for service were up 1200, compared to 2012.  But he says, 'Most of our crime types trending downward.  More importantly, most of our violent person's offences are either down or have remain flat."

Stubbs says the most concerning increase is in calls for service for mental health-related issues.  He points out those calls increased 13-percent last year and are up 40-percent when compared to statistics from just four years ago.

The city recorded one murder in April of last year – it was not gang-related and saw a Prince George man, and two others, charged in connection with the death of his father.  There were also three violent sexual assaults in the city over the course of the year.  The Superintendent notes, "These were serious events, but all resulted in arrests and charges."

Also on tonight's agenda, Councillors will receive a staff report detailing what went wrong in terms of snow removal during several major events in December and January, and will consider three recommendations to come from that review.  (click here, for previous story)

Comments

We have first hand knowledge how well the RCMP ERT TEAM deals with mental health issues.

Mental health issues are a growth industry for law enforcement and the medical system.
Not enough is being done to effectively treat those afflicted, let alone address the main reason for the increase in mental illness (meth, crack, etc.)
Answers I do not have, but I can see a growing problem, and cannot see much being done to try and control that problem.
