They dont, and thats why its a warning letter, not a ticket. (well that and the fact that they are not actually peace officers lol)
If you get a letter that says your car was at location “X” at time “Y” its a pretty safe bet that if it wasnt you then youknow who it was.

So about 2% of all drivers are ignoring the law about distracted driving. I came down the Hart today and for fun did the speed limit and everyone passed me so about 98% of the drivers were ignoring that law. And as for the come to a full stop at the stop sign, I think I saw someone do that last week. There has been lax traffic enforcement for years, and we have paid for it via insurance premiums and personal injury. But good news, the RCMP are really cracking down on the prolific drug offenders – my chances of being killed by one of them are slim to none. But priorities are priorities and keep working on that war on drugs. BTW – that war started sometime shortly after I was born, and from my user name, you can get an idea of how long that’s been. Wonder who’s winning? Just an aside, in Langley the RCMP put an officer at the highway on ramp, and there’s no escaping him/her, you come around the bend, and there they are, pointing their finger to pull over, and no warning letter – a ticket. Ever see our guys do anything like that?

Why should you drive and talk on the cell phone? For years people managed to wait until they got home or to work to communicate. Why is now so different?

Until Tim Horton’s or Star Bucks revise the method for ingesting their products, abstracted driving will be nothing new. How about the excessively loud base thumping from the boom trucks and cars in town. Can’t tell me that doesn’t distract the driver any, however they never get nailed for rattling my windows at 2:00 a.m. as they scream by the house at an excessively high rate of speed. Just saying….

see lots people, mostly older, with little dogs on their laps while driving, must be hard to be in control of a vehicle when you are sharing the drivers seat with a dog. don’t hear to much about this though.

Yeah, the little dog distraction is huge! Driving with a poodle, in a sweater, on your lap, trying to stick its head out the window, could be a problem. Not to mention the little old people that for some reason, can’t seem to see over the dash.

Oh yes, the Hart Highway 500. Just take the right hand lane and travel at the limit – almost EVERY vehicle coming up from behind will pass! City vehicles, police vehicles (!), taxis, buses, etc. Non compliance with the law is 99.9% (not 100% because it does happen once in a while that there is that odd vehicle that will actually obey the law)!

not-so-random a letter is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle… as the owner you are responsible for who is driving it…. it is only a warning so relax and pass on the warning to whomever was driving your vehicle….
but cell phones are not the only distraction with drivers… doing makeup, peting your dog, eating, playing with yuor radio, or doting over your passenger for that matter…. if you don’t want to drive…park it….problem solved for all of us….

Distracted driving is every bit as dangerous as drunk driving, and those that continue to do it should wake up. When you are hurtling down the road at 50km/h or more and not paying attention at ALL times, you are putting everyone else in harm’s way. Every day I see these people weaving across lanes, not noticing pedestrians at cross walks, blowing through red lights and stop signs etc. The police should be allowed to confiscate their cell phones and charge them with driving with undue care and attention. Worse yet are the “professional drivers” driving semis who are doing this while hauling heavy/dangerous cargo. Talking on the phone wont seem so important once you run over someone now will it?
