Slick Roads + High Speeds = Collision

Monday, March 3, 2014 @ 3:00 PM

Prince George, B.C. – There is nothing about today that says “summer” so Prince George RCMP Traffic Services officers are wondering aloud just why people  are driving  as if  it’s mid August.

“White roads are slippery roads” says Sergeant Al Steinhauser “Slow Down!”

Sgt. Steinhauser says  officers have attended to at least a dozen collisions today, all a result of  people driving too fast for  conditions.

“The roads are slick, and they best way to avoid being involved in a collision is to slow down and keep  your distance” says Sgt. Steinhauser.

Meantime, City Streets Operations Supervisior Mick Jones,  says crews continue to focus on cutting ice and widening roads in the city’s outlying areas, and sanding streets and intersections to improve traction.

Measurements at the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant indicate some areas  of the City have received more than five centimentres of snow since Sunday evening, but it’s not expected that this will alter clearing strategies and priorities at the moment.

The current forecast calls for light snow throughout Monday, with a few more centimetres expected at the end of the week.

I have been out today , and even slowing way down the roads are slick . Intersections are really bad . Cannot get traction starting or stopping . Still seeing loads of drivers tailgating and driving too fast.

The graduated divers license system has been in place here in BC since August, 1998, that’s 16 years now.

For a system that was suppose to develop better drivers, it certainly doesn’t seem like it has accomplished that goal.

I know weather and road condition play a factor in accidents, but perhaps it’s time this whole graduated license system was evaluated for effectiveness.

Not sure how any licensing system will ever help when it seems like so many people ignore what they learned within seconds of being licensed. Everybody knows they are supposed to stop fully at stop signs. How many do? Everybody knows they are supposed to slow down. Everybody knows they are not supposed to drive with dogs on their laps (saw on of those today). It’s a simple matter of people just not caring or thinking they are better drivers than they really are. I’m not sure how you fix that. Certainly nobody has figured it out yet.

Interesting drive home. Nice rear ender at Massey and Ospika.

-hey Lakewood Electric van, do you have signal lights on that van ?
-hey ACME cleaning van, sweep your van off so you can see out of it.
-hey old people in dark Kia, where Ospika meets Tyner the right lane turns right onto University.
-hey grey car on O’Grady, beautiful 360

Its incredibly slick out there folks. If you can’t drive, please stay home.

yep, she was a bit slick out there this morning. I noticed it even with snow covered vehicles. Was that You, middle finger I saw as I was doing my spinorama.

Yup. Very slick out there. Watch out for intersections at the bottoms of hills.

As for licensing, lhl hit the nail on the head. People seem to ignore the rules as they see fit. No graduated system or any system you can think of will stop people who drive as if the laws of physics don’t apply to them.

My understanding of the graduated system was that any one with a L or N would be treated harder, like losing the right to drive if found ignoring the laws. Instead it seems to be a license to ignore the laws right in front of the police. So the graduated system teaches the new drivers that they don’t have to obey the laws.

Learner (L license) exam fee = free
Road test fee for class 7 (Novice) = $35.00
First Class 7 (Novice license) = $75.00
Road test fee for class 5 = $50.00
Regular 5 year drivers license = $75.00

Add in all the extra beauracracy to track and maintain the system, and we have a very expensive graduated driving system, that most people on here agree, does not work!

Hmmm… sounds about right!

The ones without winter tires will be blamed for the crash! This happens every time we have a lull in snowfalls. Nothing new here, move along!

Has it been 16 years already? Hmmm… Who would it have been who introduced this tasty money grab? I wonder… ;)

The best aspect of the graduated system is that a brand new driver can’t load up his car with all of his 16 yr old friends and then proceed to write the whole works off.

People#1: “Add in all the extra beauracracy to track and maintain the system, and we have a very expensive graduated driving system, that most people on here agree, does not work!”

Well colour me surprised! I actually agree with you.

“Who would it have been who introduced this tasty money grab? I wonder… ;)”
LMAO

I lost count of the number of idiots driving this morning in the blowing snow who didn’t have their lights on. It’s difficult to believe that there are that many stupid people in this little town.

Yes; “Who would it have been who introduced this tasty money grab? I wonder…” is a very funny and indeed ironic statement.

I think the real “money grab” occurred between 2001 – 2014 where the cost of purchasing, and then renewing, those driver’s licences TRIPLED. In light of this “fact” I do think we must ask ourselves just who has been grabbing our money? I wonder…. ;-)

All the concern and yet this morning at 7:15 the RCMP cruiser # 1106 was travelling from downtown, west on Hwy 16 without having the snow cleared from the vehicle, tail lights cleared of snow, nor tail lights on. Yes, it was daylight, but with the blowing snow, the vehicle was not visible.

Just got back from an out of town job. What on earth is going on here??

Peeps has commented: “Add in all the extra bureaucracy to track and maintain the system, and we have a very expensive graduated driving system, that most people on here agree, does not work!”

Wow, I think this is the first time EVER that Peeps has suggested that a government program providing highly paid government and union positions is a very expensive system, and one that doesn’t work!

Welcome to the dark side, Peeps!!

And then on top of that, we have both JohnnyBelt and myself agreeing with Peeps!

It’s official! Here I thought that we were in the midst of a cold spell, when in fact Hell truly has frozen over!!

Al, please have a chat with the GD members and ask them to clean up their act.
And for those stupid civilians that don’t understand, yes, you do have to get off the road when you see blue and red christmas lights coming up behind you, Jeeebuzz!
Watched a waste management truck slap a 350 to the curb today like it was a fly.
People just didn’t get it today, frozen road, real dry snow compacted, icy intersections, Slow Down! The life you save could be mine and I’m precious!

” I do think we must ask ourselves just who has been grabbing our money? I wonder…. ;-)”

I’d guess that most of that money has been grabbed by our over bloated civil service employees.

People in Prince George not knowing how to drive? That’s shocking. I was out for only about 30 minutes today to get groceries and I witnessed more stupidity in that 30 minutes of driving than I can remember. I was fingered, honked at and to the nice gentleman in the jacked up Dodge with his high beams on 3 ft from my bumper, sorry for making you late to your award for douchebag of the year. My family and I’s safety comes first, not your rush to get wherever you are going.

17 years ago the government was going to make it mandatory for new drivers to graduate from am approved driving school as part of the graduated licensing program. Unfortunately for us all, they backed off on it because the lefties screamed about poor folk (no money) and immigrants (no English) not being able to participate…

To the Grey Dodge pickup that blew off the exit from North Kelly today.. nice pile of plastic pieces you left behind. Going a touch fast were we? Hundreds of other drivers made the same corner just fine this morning…
ah well, our insurance will suck it up for you. You’re welcome. Idiot.

When I passed him he was out taking pictures of the damage. Gotta shake your head at the way some people take that corner.

Hey contractor, I took the time to read your comment, now that’s 10 seconds of my life I wish I could have back. Oh, and you might want to check out who our BC government was in 1997… just saying.

I know for a fact that the roads have been extremely slippery this week – I am a driver with 40+ years experience, using a car with studded snow tires (tires and brakes checked yesterday at service and in excellent condition). I slid into two intersections on Monday, despite everything I did to try and stop.

I drive a standard transmission and slowed the car with a gear change; still slid. The combo of fresh, dry snow on top of well polished ice gave no traction. I had the brake pedal to the max, nothing – sliding, sliding.

I guess I should have blown through the yellow lights instead of trying to stop for it.
