Cougars Set to Push for Playoff Spot
Prince George, B.C. – The push towards the 2014 Western Hockey League playoffs continues this weekend for the Prince George Cougars who are set to welcome the WHL’s top scorer Mitch Holmberg and the Spokane Chiefs for a double-header that starts tonight.
With four games remaining in their regular season schedule, the Prince George Cougars currently trail the eighth placed Tri-City Americans by only four points for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Two victories this weekend will be key for the Cougars to keep pace.
It all starts tonight when the Cougars announce the Hubbell Designer Goldsmith’s Player of the Month for February. The winner will join Ty Edmonds (September/October), Chase Witala (November), Jordan Tkatch (December) and Todd Fiddler (January) on the list of monthly winners, and will be eligible to be voted as the Hubell Designer Goldsmith’s Player of the Year in the fan-poll on the Cougars website .
Tomorrow night is awards night and before the game, the Cougars will be handing out their individual awards for the 2013-2014 season. Award categories include: Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Most Dedicated Player, and the Scholastic Player of the Year. The team will also name it’s Volunteer of the Year.
It could also be a banner weekend for two Prince George Cougars who are fast approaching three major milestones.
20-year-old forward Todd Fiddler is just five goals shy of reaching the 50 goal mark. Should Fiddler reach 50 goals, he would become just the second Prince George Cougar to ever accomplish that feat, joining Quinn Hancock who scored 54 goals during the 1997-1998 season. Fiddler comes into the weekend with 92 points and needs just four more points in his final four games to record the second highest season point total in franchise history. His 18-game point streak is currently the longest active streak in the WHL.
Cougars captain Troy Bourke needs just four points in his final four games to become the Prince George Cougars franchise scoring leader. Currently Bourke has 81 goals and 230 career points, which leaves him just three points shy of matching Eric Hunter’s 233 career points which he accomplished during the 2006-2007 season.

Soon as they are out of the playoff picture they announce the sale. Book it.
And where did these Cougar record holders go?
Eric Hunter only managed one decent season as a pro in ECHL, and floundered for three seasons in the AHL. He’s played on two different European teams this season (In Denmark and Austria).
Quinn Hancock hasn’t faired much better. Only one full season in the AHL, and has been in Europe since the 2001-02 season (and not exactly lighting it up). He’s played in 11 different hockey leagues, and 16 different hockey clubs. Looks like he may have retired as his stats dropped off after 2012-13.
For what it’s worth, these guys obviously love the game a great deal to take it that distance to make a living. It’s a tough slog. For that, I tip my hat.
That other news paper in town just announced Cougars unoffically sold to Greg Pocock, Hamuis, and Brewer. Just needs league approval. Still just a rumour?
What does ‘unofficially sold’ mean?
The Hamhuis / Brewer rumour has been around for a very long time. I’m trying to figure out why they would want to buy the Cougars? Yes, they played here… but what else?
