UNBC Celebrates Cultural Diversity

Monday, March 10, 2014 @ 3:50 AM

Prince George, B.C. – UNBC is hosting Culture Days on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.  The event has been held for the past three years to celebrate the cultural diversity on campus.

On Tuesday, Student Life in partnership with International Education is hosting a two hour workshop for students, faculty and staff about the topic of cross-cultural communication. Coordinator Lisa Scheck says it  is an introduction to the rules of communication in different cultures.  Participants receive information about how different cultures communicate and essentially what is considered appropriate and inappropriate in each culture.  She says students from Japan, India, Pakistan, China, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Kenya and Canada will be attending.

Then on Wednesday there is a Celebration of Culture in the Wintergarden, featuring displays from nine countries focussing on the theme of festivals.  Entertainment by performers from Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and Nepal runs from 12:30-2:30.  And an international food fair with dishes from nine countries runs from noon to 1pm.  The charge is $2 per item.  The day’s events include calligraphy and origami making demonstrations, and students can have their name written in many languages and collect recipes from each booth.

Students from UNBC’s English Language Studies program are the people making the event happen. They  will be on hand to discuss their displays, provide entertainment and help serve the food.

… what is considered inappropriate and appropriate behavior in each culture? Hmmm. Saudi Arabia should start off their list with the interesting item whereas “women aren’t allowed to drive or leave their home unescorted”. That, by itself ought to be a discussion hoot up there.
