Prince George, B.C. – The predicted change in the weather in the Prince George area is resulting in a rapid melt of the snow levels within the city.
A quick drive around parts of the city resulted in the discovery of backed-up water pools at some intersections. Side streets are slick with a combination of water and ice on the surface but the main streets in town are clear and wet. The overnight low temperature will remain slightly above freezing at plus 2. It’ll be right at zero Sunday night and minus 4 Monday night.
The weather change has been expected and the City Streets and Utilities Divisions have been taking steps in preparation for the quick melt. Work crews have been clearing snow from ditches in problem areas and making sure that catch basins are cleared of ice and any other obstructions.
There is a puddle crew out working today, locating and opening up catch basins that are still blocked. They’ll work through the day and will be back at it tomorrow, if the situation warrants. As well the City has a foreman on call and staff and equipment will be put to work if needed.

The sudden thaw was even mentioned on the big Vancouver news stations. What nobody is mentioning yet is if this weather trend continues here in the Central Interior for as long as is predicted, we will be hearing about a very serious flood threat in the lower mainland in about 14 days.

You mean City Crews Deal With Pooling Water On Overtime!
So they should wait until Monday. Maybe the unions are behind the thaw this weekend?
Some people make me laugh, first they complain about ever thing, but if there basements were flooding because of water backup, you would not here crap about it.
My point seamutt is if they plowed the streets properly to begin they wouldn’t need to unthaw so much! So how much money did they save by plowing after more has accumulated? What ever the savings they are being gobbled up by drain crew!
Lots of people can prevent flooded basements if they’d take the time and not shovel the snow towards their homes in both sets of yards they have when it begins to snow in the first place. A very simple concept. If anyone thinks placing snow against their home will keep it warmer is sadly mistaken. I’ve seen lots of homes with snow piled up against it and well, have fun. No way it can snow under a roof lip. If they have one.
So the snow on the side of the streets, lawns whatever has nothing to do with the water on the roads? My road is almost bare but a small river running down it.
pookerjams. Why would placing snow against the side of a house not keep it warmer???
Hey Pooker, in my young life, we always banked the house with snow, and Pal, yer right, it did keep the houses warmer. Lotta folks did that.
Try placing snow against the side of your house and it will melt. So for it to melt there has to be heat loss. So placing snow against your house does help insulate it.
This is not rocket science.
But for some I guess it is.
