Hell Yeah Prince George Taking Off
Facebook page stirs up proud posts about PG – image courtesy Facebook
Prince George, B.C.- Call it a counter attack.
A local man, Scott McWalter, has launched a Facebook page, called “Hell Yeah Prince George” to counter the negative comments and attitudes being spread by another Facebook page called “WTF Prince George”.
McWalter explains his reason for launching “Hell Yeah Prince George” as this “This specific group (WTF Prince George) is making our kick-ass northern community look like a bunch of whiners. Instead of constantly complaining about the city we live in, I suggest using this energy to speak towards the things that make the City of Prince George truly incredible. I'm talking about that stranger who bought you coffee; I'm talking about that perfect sunset picture; I'm talking about the extraordinary meal you had at a local restaurant; I'm talking about sunny days at the lake! The list is endless!
These are the kinds of things/experiences that deserve to be shared and raved about. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the easiest and best way to make yourself sound unintelligent is to complain about the city that you choose to live in. PG City is filled with unlimited recreational opportunities, diverse culture, amazing people and good times! Let's celebrate and focus on that! Prince George, You Rock!”
This is not the first time someone in Prince George has launched a counterattack to negative comments about the City. You may recall several years ago when MP Hedy Fry told Parliament that “as we speak” crosses were being burned on lawns in Prince George. That sparked the Fry Hedy Fry website .
Then there was the contest launched by a lower mainland radio station that would see winners travel to what the station referred to as “the armpit of the world, Prince George,” for the Elton John concert. The station was convinced ( by its legal department) to rephrase the contest to “the jewel of the interior, Prince George”. 250News ran a counter contest at the time, asking folks for their reasons why concerts in Prince George are better than concerts in Vancouver. The winner picked up $100 dollars.
And so now, it’s Scott McWalter who has stood up to launch the counter attack to the WTF Facebook page, “I just woke up on Sunday morning, and thought I wanted to do something positive” says McWalter “ so I put together the Facebook page, added a couple of nice cover shots, and the community has done the rest”.
What the community has done has responded with images, and information that surprised even McWalter “Some of the photos are fantastic, and there are events and things going on in this city I didn’t know about and definitely will have to check out.”
While “WTF Prince George" is a closed group that has some 1913 members, the newly launched “Hell Yeah Prince George" has nearly tripled that number with 5.608 members ( and growing) since just being launched on Sunday. Does that mean “Hell Yeah” founder Scott McWalter will claim victory? “I don’t think victory has to be declared” says McWalter, “I think it really has been a rally by the community to speak positively about the community.”
As for how long “Hell Yeah Prince George” can expect to be in the spotlight, McWalter isn’t saying “That’s up to the community, it will last as long as the community wants to share those positive things about Prince George.”

You may want to ask the Admins how many peeps are in the WTF Group as to me it stands at over 4,000 members and is a secret group. Which would be why you couldn’t get the actual result. Although it’s nice to see some positive pages going up, there is suj a thing as too much positivity for one persons mind to take in no matter what you share. And yes I am apart of BOTH groups so my comment doesn’t sound so biased towards WTF.
WTF, to many people with to much time, get a second job and contribute to the economy to funny
Hey, I just commented about this yesterday, and could have sworn Prince George was referred to as the “armpit of BC” not the world.
At any rate, nice to see some positive spin for PG, but let’s not get carried away and ignore the substantial social issues this city faces.
Awww Hell No….
Right on, Scott McWalter
Hell Yea, bad potholes and road season is nearly upon us!
I just love Scott’s enthusiasm for life. Good job getting this page going and thanks for making PG a better place!
best free advertising ever for a potential new city council member
Clicktivism at its finest.
Way to go Scott, Glad to see the next generation of entrepeneurs embracing out city.
Cool idea and folks should not underestimate the power of social media. Heck, if managed proactively, I would actually suggest that this page could be more influential for PG than O250.
Facebook is far more interactive and “just in time” than a website like O250 and this page could be a great venue for getting people in PG talking, participating in various events, promoting the city, etc.
Should be “Heck Yeah Prince George”. A good time to whine about Facebook bullying? Seems to be the trendy thing to do these days.
Facebook is an example of mob rule …..
It is finally coming to light that half or better of those on the site are pseudonyms, the same as most other such sites. God only knows how many duplications there are.
First thing about marketing and coming up with a brand name ….. explore who might already be associated with it and what it means ….
http://www.hellyeahband.com
Very appropriate name for PG …
The band will be coming here in April

Hellyeah and gritty mill town sort of go together …. LOL

I think you could get around that with effective moderation, but it would take a great deal of effort.
To be truly influential, one would have to approach the management of the page in a very business like manner and I’m not sure if that was the intent when it was created.
Clicking ‘like’ on a Facebook page and actually being an engaged member of the community are two different things entirely.
In other words, actions speak louder than clicks or hits.
Arm Pit? I thought we were a lot closer to the bowels than that> Hmph?
Running around harping on the greatness of Prince George is ok as far as it goes.
Our friend Mr. McWalter should know that the so called negative issue’s that are being constantly raised about this City ie
Bad roads, pot holes, poor snow removal, poor maintenance of City buildings and infrastructure, etc; will not disappear because we happened to look at a beautiful sunset last night.
We have some serious problems with our elected officials, and City Administration, and the spending of tax dollars. This is not going to go away soon.
I am one of the critics of City Hall and Administration, and also have lived here all my life, and I do not need a lesson on what it positive and what is negative about this city.
Sunsets, big trees, Connaught Hill Park, South Fort Park, PG Railway Museum, Library, Civic Centre, Swimming Pools, Art Centre, Cottonwood Island, Rivers, streams, University, College, Hospitals, etc; etc; are all good and positive things, however they do not necessarily offset the continual gouging, and manipulation of City Hall.
Its one thing to have these things to enjoy, and its quite another to not be able to enjoy them because the different levels of Government are taxing the s..t out of people.
Now as I look out my window and enjoy the beautiful sun setting in the West, reflecting on the huge puddles of water and ice on the street, I see that we in fact have a City with a dual personality.
One personality is to put forward all the positive things that the City offers, and take credit for them, and the other is to ignore all the bad things, or blame previous administrations, or so called negative people.
Prince George will be much better served, and be much more respected, if we can get out politicians to look after the basics.
There is nothing that I would like more, than to go golfing, fishing, on vacation, etc;, knowing full well that the City is looking after my interests. The fact of the matter is they are not. In fact they are looking after their own interests, and those of vested interest groups, making money and spending money that would best be left in the hands of those who earned it.
The City is an inanimate object. It is the people who make a difference. We have lots of hard working people who volunteer, etc; year in and year out, however they too are constantly under duress from the various levels of Government.
“Bad roads, pot holes, poor snow removal, poor maintenance of City buildings and infrastructure, etc; will not disappear because we happened to look at a beautiful sunset last night.”
True Palupo, but if you spent any time on the WTF page you would see that hardly any of it is about city government issues. It is a room full of screaming whiners who complain over things as mundane as not getting their favourite parking spot… I spent 20 minutes on there and really feel like a lost a little piece of my life. This positive page has to be an improvement.
Love the positivity. I agree the WTF page is full of whining but I am tired of being labeled negative or whatever because I am concerned about the direction this city is taking.
There are important issues and problems with our infrastructure and it seems the biggest issue for council is how to build a PAC thinking that people will move to town and ignore all the problems we have.
Lets hear a “Hell Yeah” for the price of Gasoline at Costco 128.9 or the cheapest diesel going at 149.9.
FN Criminals!

But that’s how our politicians roll. Everything is always just wonderful. Even when their mouths are full of brown stuff!
Hey, now we no longer need IPG
Is this the same McWalter that used. To be Oland’s boss?
Knowlege88 and CrysBaron I suspect work for the City,.
If I waited for the City to do something for me I would be up to my ass in alligators.
I pay my taxes early, including my utilities, I put up with all the crappy streets, snow removal etc; I watch with dismay as street after street is torn up because of broken water mains. I talk to people who live in the Hart Highway and other areas who have had little or no service since amalgamation in 1974.
I watch with dismay as my taxes and other cost rise, and service goes down,.
I see the City purchasing huge buildings for their City yards, and building new office buildings on borrowed money, while at the same time shutting down the transfer station at 18th and Quinn to save money.
I see a Community Energy System that was to reduce greenhouse gas emmisions that if anything actually increased them, and furthermore no one seems to know exactly how the system is working ie; breaking even or going broke.
I see a $40 Million dollar police station, financed over 20 years for a total cost of $78 Million dollars, that is behind schedule, and probably over budget.
The list goes on and on, and I have barely scratched the surface, however I suspect that in the world of Knowlege88 and CrysBaron everything is coming up roses.
This year , circumstances as they are, city wise, can I expect to be handed to me by a city clerk a nice pair of rose coloured glasses upon paying my first of my twice yearly $497 dollar utility tax bill? It might change my outlook on this ‘burg.
Quality of life here is pretty good.. Hell yeah!!!
The funny thing is, it wasn’t 5000 people who joined, it was 5000 people who were added. I woke up one day to my FB and all of a sudden I’m a member of this group.
I think its a positive group, but ya, people are thrown on it, and don’t want to leave as that would be negative.
The area is great for recreation, but let’s not confuse this with the city of PG, which really blows.
“Is this the same McWalter that used. To be Oland’s boss?”
Nope, it is the junior version of that McWalter.
Happening at this time in the year, using the social media, this might be an early election test. The newest member of the Green team with 10% savings projected because we can have natural beauty that we can take photos of on ideal days and play back on our IPads and digital flat screen TVs. We won’t have to go out to participate. We can just let others do the walking for us. ;-)
And if you want the civil infrastructure improved, his dad’s firm will take care of that.
Gus, you might of nail the reason behind this … early election pulse.
Talk is cheap when it comes down to technology media. Facebook, tweeting all comes down to popularity and whoever has more free time. Back / Forth BS thru out the day, similar to this forum at times.
Hey northman! “Quality of life here is pretty good” Really. ?Why don’t we ask the little native girl that got jumped and beat by 5 white people in a raised white pickup on FEb 8th outside Princess Auto. The main slugger was a Walmart Clerk, no less, who was joining the others in yelling rascist remarks and calling her down because she was special needs. Can’t get the memory out of my mind! Prejudice at its finest! My boss said : “Only in Prince George!” We are both moving our families out of here when we can get transferred! Was your street cleared this winter? Mine is still rough as Hell!
“My boss said : “Only in Prince George!””
Well, your boss is an idiot.
But if you believe there is some crime free place to move to then carry on.
I’ve perused that facebook page after someone added me. It’s interesting to look at all the scenery pictures. Too bad most of them were taken outside of PG. :)
Good point axman. Probably closer to Huble Homestead.
Obviously McWalter didn’t spend much time reading WTF PG. Yes there is some whining and I think some had rights to with the state of our roads a few months ago. People need to learn how to scroll past.
I enjoy that page b/c it is a community of 4500 people, haven’t a clue where you got the other number from. It is not all whining. There are many posts praising good service at local businesses. It’s also a good community watch, people post when they see break ins or strange behavior in our neighborhoods, cells phones have been found and returned b/c of that page, animals returned, people post good and bad rentals, recently there was a post about good realtors, and almost every week there is a post about good restaurants, since we don’t get out to eat very often I enjoy reading the restaurant reviews I’ve read great reviews about restaurants that I didn’t even know existed.
Actually Western2..
Im wrong.. let me correct myself..
Quality of life here is AWESOME..!! If you dont think so then get on the next plane to Ukraine..Tell your bone head boss that an isolated incident does not represent a whole community..
Life & where you live is what you make of it for the most part. If you look around you & complain about everything, likely your life will be one big disappointment. I have friends from all walks of life in virtually every corner of the world, the thing that always stands out for me is that the issues that we have, legitimate or not, are variations on a theme everywhere. I love PG for the lifestyle it has allowed me to enjoy, it’s not for everyone but that’s the beauty of being human, we all move to the beat of a different drummer.
