Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Cougars have shared some honours with  key players of the regular season.

The team has  handed out the awards for Scholastic Player of the Year, Most Dedicated Player, Rookie of the Year, and Most Valuable Player.

The Cougars also recognized three players who are graduating from their junior hockey careers this season, in addition to naming this year’s Volunteer of the Year.
 
“The Cougars are very proud of all of our players, both in their effort and contributions made to our team, but also how they represent our organization and the community of Prince George, both at home and away,” says Brandi Brodsky Cougars Vice-President. “We thank all our players, including those three players who are now graduating from the league, our volunteers and everyone who made a contribution to our 2013-14 season.”

Scholastic Player of the Year: #12 Jansen Harkins

16 year-old rookie forward Jansen Harkins has managed to balance his  schoolwork with  his on ice duties.  The product of North Vancouver, B.C. currently leads all Cougar rookies in scoring with 10 goals and 34 points in 64 games this season while tackling a full course-load at College Heights Secondary School. Harkins’ teachers have all commended him for his professionalism and hard work both on the ice and in the classroom. Great stats, strong grades and excellent behavior make Harkins a well-deserved recipient of the Prince George Cougars Scholastic Player of the Year Award.

 
Rookie of the Year: #35 Ty Edmonds

Ty Edmonds’ WHL career kicked off with a bang in 2013-2014. Edmonds allowed just two goals over the span of his first four career starts and earned WHL and CHL Goaltender of the Week honors for his early efforts. This season, Edmonds has compiled a record of 18-19-2-4 and has appeared in a staggering 53 games this season for the Cougars. In addition to that, Edmonds was the lone WHL goaltender representative during the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game which was held in Mid-January in Calgary. Edmonds suited up for Team Cherry and stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced. Edmonds achievements in goal make him a worthy recipient of the Prince George Cougars Rookie of the Year Award.

Most Dedicated Player: #20 Troy Bourke
Troy Bourke first suited up for the Prince George Cougars as an under-ager in 2009-2010, and ever since has become both a model player and a model citizen for the Prince George Cougars. The Colorado Avalanche prospect has dressed in 274 WHL regular season games, all with the Cougars. In that span he has recorded 82 goals, and 231 points and now sits just three points shy of becoming the Prince George Cougars all-time scoring leader. In 2013-2014, the Cougars captain has established new career highs for goals (27) and assists (53). Bourke’s potential in hockey knows no bounds, and the Cougars sure are grateful to award Bourke with the Prince George Cougars Most Dedicated Player award for 2013-2014.

 
Most Valuable Player: #14 Todd Fiddler
Despite his league-wide reputation for highlight reel goals and terrific offense, nobody could have predicted just how incredible Todd Fiddler’s impact would be for the Prince George Cougars in 2013-2014. Acquired in late October 2013 in a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Fiddler arrived in Prince George eager to prove some of his doubters wrong, and that’s precisely what he has done. In 50 games with the Cougars, he has scored 44 goals and added 39 assists for 83 points. Some of his many season highlights include: January WHL Player of the Month honors, five hat-tricks, a 19-game point streak and after Saturday’s announcement, team MVP honours.

In addition to the awards listed above, the Prince George Cougars also presented the three graduating 20-year-olds (Peter Kosterman, Klarc Wilson and Todd Fiddler) with their jerseys, and also recognized Norm Poitras as the 2013-2014 Volunteer of the Year.
