P.G. Among Communities Where Anti-Hate Crime Campaign Launched

Monday, March 17, 2014 @ 11:47 AM

Prince George, B.C.- Prince George is one of nine communities in B.C. where the "Know Hate Crime" campaign has been launched.

The campaign provides information for the public about what constitutes a hate crime, reporting information and links to resources for victims.

The campaign is available in print, social media, television, radio and transit ads, and will run for six weeks. ( you can see the video by clicking here)

A hate crime is defined as a criminal offence motivated by hate towards an identifiable group. According to Statistics Canada (2011 report), the primary motive of over half (52%) of all incidents of hate crime in Canada is race or ethnicity. The second-highest motivation is religion (25%).

Communities in British Columbia are increasingly culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse with immigrants now accounting for approximately 27% of our population and an additional 5% comprised of indigenous Aboriginal populations.

Wow!

I hate my governments effort to instill this. My government is an “identifiable group”. Come and get me. Hope we never start enforcing “thought crime”. A motor vehicle like “sideswipe” on the free speech section in “The Charter of Rights” which is presently permitted for the next little while? Thin edge of the wedge in that respect. IMO.

This Anti Hate Champaign to be followed by “How to be A Good 2015 Winter Games Host” Champaign.

Campaign. No H. “Champaign” is most likely an illiterate label used in an attempt to fob off a cheap wine.

So how is this going to help the little aboriginal girl beat up by five white people in a white pickup who stopped to punch her out in front of Princess Auto at the transit bus stop on Feb 8th? They were yelling anti native slurs and calling her a retard. 24 of us witnessed it but the police didn’t arrest anyone! The worst assault came from a Walmart lady clerk. It was even caught on private video. Prejudice is alive and well in Prince George! Did you know that Prince George School District is recognized as losing more students to prejudice than any other school district in BC ? Port Coquitlam who has a zero tolerance level to bullying has the best level at no children bullied out of school.

Good point western2; those five racists will likely not voluntarily participate in this Anti Hate Campaign. Maybe we can force them to take a “super host” course?

yep, must make their parents proud to see their kids in action.

What did you do? Did you step up and say something?

Prejudice is alive and well everywherend you are naive if you think school statistics show the whole picture.

Amazing 24 people just stood there and watch. So, who were you expecting to make the change. All 24 of you failed if you just stood there and watched.

I agree that prejudice is alive and well everywhere.

I’d also suggest that it is more alive and well in places where people don’t often interact with others who are different than they are. This can take the form of racial prejudice, linguistic prejudice, cultural prejudice, age prejudice, religious prejudice, a combination of these or others.

IMHO, the best way to combat prejudice is to combat ignorance. The best way to combat ignorance is for people to experience things that are different from what they have experienced in the past. Talk to someone about their religion. Try and understand an issue from someone else’s point of view. Eat in a restaurant surrounded by people that don’t look like you. Go to a different place and try to converse with someone in their language. Even if you can’t speak that language, just learn a few words and see how far that will actually take you. Partake in an activity that you have never done before. Take a vacation to a place you know nothing about and talk to the people who live there, not just those serving you drinks at the resort. Get outside of your comfort zone.

Once you do some of those things, make a habit of doing them again and again and again. You’ll experience some amazing things and you’ll find that you’ll feel less threatened by people’s differences and more accepting of them. This will help you grow as a person and it will help you grow your community.

Bubbles are bad. Break out of them.

Why is this program being launched in PG? Do we have a particularly high incidence of hate crime?

Good post, NMG. Bottom line, take responsibility for yourself and expand your horizons. Don’t expect government-funded feel-good programs and the like to do it for you.

Some are so bored with there lives, they have to invent something to do!
The perfect World is called “UTOPIA”

I don’t think PG has a racist problem any more than any other place in Canada. The vast majority are color blind. My wife is a visible minority and I have never heard her complain about any racism directed towards her or any of her friends.

Decent people that have dignity in themselves tend to be treated with dignity, and rare is the exception.

What these programs always tend to overlook is racism against white people, because that doesn’t count. Like the knock out game being played in cities across the United States as the latest fade. That is a pure hate crime if there ever was one for example, and yet it is swept under the rug so to speak because its not politically correct to talk about it.

Ending hate crimes to some extent is a two way street. At one time the largest slave population and the biggest victims of racism were the Irish, and yet now they are one of the most respected religious ethnicity’s… largely to do with their personal dignity, which in itself is a lesson worth considering.

Want to see racism and prejudice, be a white guy asking an east Indian girl out.

Works both ways.

Western2……I would be embarrassed to admit that I was part of a group of 24 that stood by and did nothing while a girl got assaulted ! And then blame the police for doing nothing ! Amazing !

Not to worry Western2, I could post links to hundreds of news stories of people being stabbed, shot, and beaten to death trying to break up fights / stepping into altercations.

Some of these yahoos are only hero’s in their own minds, typing on a computer key board. ;-)

boon you got it…. western, when you all stand there staring at a women being beaten by a bunch of men you are no better than them. people#1 24 people watched, 24 people did nothing, 24 people could have done something to stop 5 douchbags? no? 24 people watched that is messed up
twenty four

All hearsay, 24 people, 12 people and dog, what ever. Everyone seems to be a hero from their computer key boards.

I have any idea; lets get an Internet lynch mob going over this:

If it was in the U.S., Venezuela, Ukraine, Syria and the like I’m sure some one would whip out their phone to film it. Seems Canadians are kinda slow off the mark.
