Horgan Says P.G. Critical to NDP Win

Prince George, B.C. – Just three days after announcing he was in the running for the leadership of the NDP in B.C, John Horgan has landed in Prince George.
He headed up a session at the Civic Centre tonight, hoping to get some of those in attendance to join “Team Horgan” either through a party membership or a donation to his campaign.
Horgan says Prince George is “critical, absolutely critical” to any future success of the NDP. “That’s why I came here right off the hop. If we can’t win in Northern British Columbia, we will not form government and I have no interest in many more years in opposition.” He added “You don’t win government if you don’t win Prince George.”
As for what sets him apart from the other leadership candidate, Mike Farnworth, Horgan says it’s all about style “I think one of the issues we have been hearing a lot about during the campaign is that Adrian’s approach wasn’t sufficient to win over those people who don’t think about politics a lot. Anyone who knows him knows how intelligent he is, and how quickly he can respond to a myriad of issues and his work ethic. But in modern politics, low information voters, those who only pay attention during a 28 day campaign, need to have something that will capture their attention. I believe what separates Mike and I is that I will have a better chance of doing that.”
How does he plan to do that? “By being present, and by building relationships. I think if people become comfortable with the message you are delivering, they are more likely to vote for you. That’s a repetition issue, be present, be available, be accessible, I will answer questions all day long and try to make it entertaining as well.”
Horgan sprinkled his presentation with humour, when asked if he supported decriminalization of marihuana he responded with “I can say I haven’t smoked pot… today.” While not coming out and saying he has used marihuana, he said his spouse is Dutch, and he has been to Amsterdam. And yes, he does support the decriminalization of marihuana.
While not a fan of what he calls “scorecard politics” he was asked about his stand on a number of key issues in the region:
- Enbridge: Says the party stance has been to oppose the pipeline, that he thinks “This is not the appropriate course of action for the North to have 800 water bodies crossed by Alberta crude to get to a coast line that doesn’t have a rapid response capacity as there is in the lower mainland.”
- Site C: Says while he had supported in the past, he has become familiar with the area, and doesn’t believe the project is needed right now, although that is not to say he wouldn’t support it at some time in the future.
- Education: “We need to stop making education a political football.”
- Poverty Reduction: “Poverty is real, its been here for generations. We have a plan, we put forth a poverty reduction plan, it is a complex problem that requires complex solutions, ignoring the problem is not the answer.” He says it is a high priority for him.
- News Prosperity mine: Horgan says while he did support the development of Mount Milligan, he does not support the Taseko proposal for the New Prosperity mine. However, he does encourage Taseko to move forward with its expansion plans for Gibralter Mines.
The New Democrats in B.C. will select a new party leader in September of this year.

No pipelines, electric, or mining. How does he expect to pay for education and ‘poverty reduction’? Is this the best the NDP has to offer? Next!
Jesus Christ mentioned about two thousand years ago that “we will always have poor people”. Hey! A guy ahead of his time, eh? Tell me something I don’t know. I want proof the NDP can run a popcorn stand first. The Socreds built the roads, the railroad and fixed up the ferry system. The dippers? We got the ALR and ICBC. Any more?
“Fixed up the ferry system? Ummm… I guess if you think increasing ferry fares and cutting back on run schedules is fixing it.
They didn’t fix the ferry system that great with fares going up…why do people always give the Socreds all the credit…is unbelievable!
I like this John Horgan.
So he is against jobs. Short memory.
Socreds, People, not the current bunch of Re-treds.
I cannot understand how someone who lives here fails to remember BC’s political history. People#1 show up after the last Dipper was shown the door in Victoria? Just in passing apparently NDP MLA Jenny Kwan got a free trip to Disneyland courtesy of the Portland Hotel Society. I look forward to her explanation. My brother met her once. He told me if Chinese had blondes, she would be one. Carry on, folks.
Harbinger, I think you just insulted half the people on the planet with your racist remarks. It explains where all your other comments come from.
British Columbia-Cottonwood scandal
“Land dealings by Chief Justice Mathew Bailey Begbie in the area of Cottonwood became the focus of a scandal in the later 19th century. Begbie denied any impropriety and papers relating to the scandal were all destroyed”.
Even BC’s most honourable are and were dirty dippers.
Half the people on this planet are not blonde.
No jobs, no social programs. The NDP still doesn’t get it.
The PHS scandal was well known about prior to the election but was kept hush hush by the Libs.
I didn’t know blondes were “half the people on this planet”. Lady Clairol must be doing a land-office business.
Our govt aren’t they special?

Dragonmaster, as I stated in another post:
Did they chose to keep it quiet until well after the election?
The audit covered a 3 year period of time, from March 2010 to March 2013. So, if the audit period did not end until after March 2013, it is highly unlikely that the report would be compiled, processed, completed and released by the May 13, 2013 election date.
Nice try though!
Dragonmaster, why do people who resign always want the golden ticket?
Peeps needs to learn how to read instead of leading Sunnyday on. We all know how the NDP fixed up the ferry system don’t we?
Socreds were here in the 80s Peeps, anyone still have their brick shares, could have got 56 cents a share when Pattison privatized the company? It was akin to when the NDP bought Skeena and made BC a fortune on logging and milling businesses.
I almost went to Expo 86, the Coke highway now that it is toll free is a nice change over the canyon the times I use it. With the thaw and freeze it must go over – why they don’t have the potholes we do in PG?
The NDP need to do what Tony Blair did to British…move to absolute centre…..we are a resource extraction economy that has not diversified to build a stable economy. Adriam Dix needs to be turfed asap and Jenny Kwan and all these lefties. Either John Horgan moves this party to centre and comes up with a sustainable diversification plan to support resource economy….or BC needs to get off their fat butts and form a new political party. Christy Clark is nit the answer…..long term stable employment in the north has been in severe decline since you all elected this bunch. They are making sure their business spoorterd do well but nobody else is. They are selling off our province to the Chinese Red Army and temporary foreign workers. Many if our kids are losing opportunities to be accepted in our tax funded universities in top programs because foreign students with double tuition are taking up seats. I find it incredible that people have allowed BC to get so “out of whack”
There is no-way in hell you are a teacher Crysbaron / ice. Alias…..
Yes I am…..and I am a direct descendant of one if the first business families in this province.
Oh yeah ? And Amor De Cosmos was my great grandfather. Hahaha…..
I believe it…..he was one weirdo!!
I believe it…..he was one weirdo!!
What difference does it make if our natural resources are owned by the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Americans, British, Europeans, etc;???? One thing is certain, very little is actually owned by Canadians.
One of the first business families in this Province would be the First Nations trading with the Hudson Bay Co.
No pipelines, no mines, no power, hmmm – Maybe thats the NDP plan to build families. With everyone unemployed there will be lots of time to spend “growing” the family.
ps – Education isnt a political football, the BCTF fights with all political stripes equally ;)
Be involved in things but don’t commit.
It’s like eggs and bacon.
The chicken was involved, the pig was committed. Not my words, but a good idea nonetheless.
We need foreign investment but we need to keep control of our natural resources. These multi-nationals dont pay the taxes they should be…ie. offshore head offices and the profits leave Canada and go elsewhere. That’s why its important that BC and Canada control our natural resource extraction. We need Danny Williams type leader in this province. The reason why we have the particular politicians we have now is because lies have been told so often by the corrupt lieberals ….the people buy into the “hope”. THE NDP kill the hope with their utter stupidity in regard some of their members. New party in this province needed with stringent conflct of interest laws.
taxpayerteacher. We lost control of our natural resources many years ago. Have you been asleep.
Probably 80% of all business, corporations, and industry in Canada is owned by foreign companies.
Harbinger. The Rooster was involved, the chicken was an unwilling participant, and the pig was committed against his will.
Palopu: “Probably 80% of all business, corporations, and industry in Canada is owned by foreign companies.”
Welcome to the global economy. Glad you could join us.
Hart Guy, it was stated on Global BC that the libs new what was going on prior to the election but kept it hush hush. Nice try though
“These multi-nationals dont pay the taxes they should be..”
Apparently neither do most major corporations in Canada.
have you not seen the news over the last two weeks?

Dragonmaster, why do people who resign always want the golden ticket?
————————————
The libs wrote it all into his contract and are trying to back out of it apparently. Is that a golden ticket? Are you suggesting his expenses while on the job are to come out of his own pocket? Let me guess, you’re a liberal party member right?
All the other govt friendlies that have resigned etc have been given their payouts.
John Doyle wasn’t govt friendly though was he?
“Horgan says Prince George is âcritical, absolutely criticalâ to any future success of the NDP. âThatâs why I came here right off the hop. If we canât win in Northern British Columbia, we will not form government and I have no interest in many more years in opposition.â He added âYou donât win government if you donât win Prince George.â
Then I suppose it’s time to lower yourselves to the level of the libs and fire up all four burners of the NDP personal attack system.
Palopu states; “Probably 80% of all business, corporations, and industry in Canada is owned by foreign companies.”
JB states; “Welcome to the global economy. Glad you could join us.’
Ummm… shouldn’t that be: “Glad you could OWN us”?
The banks need to start paying taxes. They use taxpayer paid infrastructures. It was Carol Taylor for the Liberals that set up the agreements with banks operating in BC. Then she gets appointed to some cushy Board for a good penny
One would have to think that any Political Party that would elect Adrian Dix as its leader is left wanting.
Horgan might win the leadership, however these other dudes are still behind the scenes running the party. The NDP didn’t shoot themselves in the foot when they elected Dix as leader, they actually blew their foot off.
Horgan or any other leader will have one hell of a big job to convince anyone to vote for them. Christy on the other hand can put on her hard hat, safety glasses, and pass out barbecued hot dogs, and rake in the votes,.
This Province has some serious problems when it comes to leadership.
If Horgan cant cleanse NDP and do “a Tony Blair” the NDP are redundant forever. Horgan is the guy to successfully challenge Ms. Titswiggle
Hell, let the LibCons win again I say. Sit back and watch all (100%) of our natural resources become foreign owned.
Time I learned mandarin anyway.
taxpayerteacher/ Crysbaron/ CF-18/ Alias…..
Can I ask you a question ? Are any of the SD #57 trustees teachers, and if not, why not ?
Is your question a test question or a genuine question rummy?
The answer is one (1); Chairwoman Sheryl Warrington, she is a retired teacher.
Gee, thanks Peeps, I was hoping the self proclaimed teacher would have to work for an answer.
So I’ll have to settle for “why not”. Alias has future politician skills.
One trustee I am aware of is a former teacher. I should run for politics.
During the city contract negotiations, didn’t you claim to work in a sawmill Alias ?
Nope. But I taught him.
Uh huh. I guess he wasn’t a direct descendant from one of BC’s first business families ?
I also guess you a from the Roadapples clan ?
