Watermain Break Closes Intersection

Monday, March 24, 2014 @ 12:54 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The intersection of 4th and Ontario,  east of Queensway in Prince George,  will likely  open  by 2 this afternoon.

Crews  were called to the  intersection earlier today to deal with a watermain break.

All water  service in that area was shut off, to allow crews to  make the  necessary repairs.

The line has been fixed and  crews are  now back filling the  excavation site.   The intersection is expected to remain  a "gravel" section  until  asphalt production starts later this spring.

The money used to fix this watermain break could have been better used toward the the building of the PAC.

You are fast on the draw today Oldun.

More proof of crumbling infrastructure? Where is this city’s priorities?

I think the City gets something like 500 breaks per year. Its about time they got serious about fixing the infrastructure in this town.

They need to reallocate some of the money to those things that are really important.

What oldun said!

Oldun, you’re closer to the solution than you realize. When they build the PAC they will have to rip up the street to connect it to the community heating system, and since the street is ripped up already, we can replace the water mains in that section – and just think, we’ll get 75% of that cost covered by the feds, prov and donations. So for mere 12 million plus $300,000 a year operating costs, we can get one street’s water mains replaced. Sounds like a winner to me.

Absolutely correct, Oldun… there is no point in fixing that or any other watermain failure. The escaping water simply goes back into the aquifer so there is no net loss or net gain.

Don’t worry about the pumping costs, they will just show up as a line item after the storm water line item, the winter games line item, the extra snow clearing line item and the city hall misc. line item.

Whereas a PAC would be FAR more useful, downright necessary in fact. No need to NOT spend millions on it for the huge number of users just waiting to do so.

The infrastructure in your town doesn’t need to be fixed just because it breaks from old age or wear/tear … some of it being over a hundred years old.. (fact BTW) … if your water is off or your sewer is plugged on the street, just go over to your new PAC and use the washrooms there, just be sure to take your toothbrush and towels.

No better way to get the value for those extra tax dollars coming out of your pocket real soon.

Fix the infrastructure ???

Whaddya nuts ?? Get real !! :-)

PAC is going up by the Multiplex so it is going to tap into the UNBC energy system!

I wonder if they should look at lining the piping system rather than replacing. Its a lot cheaper than replacing and a heck of a lot faster to do.

DO we all think that crumbling infrastructure is a PG problem. I think we are probably in better shape than most larger centres. Breaks happen. They happen because pipe gets old, ground shifts and pipes break. Brining up the PAC every time the city spends money is ridiculous. I don’t support the building of the PAC at this time because of the money and the fact that I imagine that most of this council will be voted out in November so I don’t want any legacy spending on their way out. Let the PAC fight it’s battle and voters hold the city to account strictly on their record and vision.
