Superintendent Stubbs Moving Out and Up
Prince George, B.C.- RCMP Superintendent Eric Stubbs is leaving Prince George.
250News has learned Stubbs is moving to Ottawa.
He was named to the post as Officer in Charge of the Prince George Detachment in March of 2011, and arrived on the scene in June of that same year. At the time he said he was aware the City was looking for a 3 year commitment, and he was agreeable to that, if not longer.
The three years are up.
He had placed a focus on reducing the number of illegal guns in the community, having arrived in this City on a weekend which saw two shootings.
Under his watch, RCMP in Prince George not only focused on illegal firearms, but continued the focus on prolific offenders. In addition to placing a focus on repeat offenders, a new domestic violence program was launched.
He was a key player in the creation and implementation of the City’s crime reduction plan, which was developed in the wake of the City being named Crime Capital of Canada for the third year straight. Although significant progress has been made on that crime reduction front, the magazine which placed the label on the City decided not to issue its annual crime report last fall.
When Superintendent Stubbs arrived in Prince George, the old buildings at 4th and Victoria were in the demolition stage. At his first Council meeting he told Council, he was “looking forward to what might rise from the rubble.”
What has risen from that rubble is a facility into which his team has yet to move, although he did officiate at the unveiling of the detachment in November of last year.
Superintendent Stubbs becomes the 4th RCMP member to have served in Prince George to make the move to Ottawa:
- Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens, in charge of “E” Division served in Prince George
- Deputy Commissioner Peter Henschel: started his RCMP career in Prince George serving here straight out of depot
- Brenda Butterworth-Carr: Was the Superintendent of the P.G. detachment, moved to Ottawa and is now Officer in Charge of “F” Division (Saskatchewan).
While the exact departure date for Superintendent Stubbs is not yet known, it is suspected he will wait until the end of the school year.
Comments
Seems to me that Stubbs had something on the ball. It will be our loss that he’s leaving.
Hopefully we will get a replacement that will continue to focus on prolific offenders, and illegal guns.
I agree, I think Stubbs was a pretty sharp guy and was probably on his way up so to speak. The reality is that his career options likely outgrew what was available to him in PG. With the city being stagnant in growth, that will continue to be a trend for people like him.
Maybe he will return when he sees his property tax bill out here, LOL ;)
He will be a loss to our community. Such a great guy..
thank you sir, not a glamour job, but you did it.
Also under his watch, Gregory Matters, deceased September 9, 2012. Just saying….
Yes PG Whirly Girl, Superintendent Stubbs personally placed the hatchet into Greg Matters hand….Sheesh!
Had the pleasure of working in association with Eric in Terrace (and playing the odd hockey game with) and I can tell you, he is a gem of a man and this will be PG’s loss as it was Terrace’s loss before that.
Good luck and best wishes _keep up the good fight!
It’s not often I would consider censoring someone, but when someone says something so careless and stupid, I think they should be censored for their own good.
Grow up, Whirly Girl!
Totally offensive and ignorant comment.
whirly girl’s point is valid, and evolution, thanks for backing her up.
as evolution points out, while it may not have been been stubbs, it was never shown/explained to us how or where the freshly unwrapped ‘axe’ came from.
a brand new ‘axe’ complete with plastic wrap and awkward ‘sheath’ at the scene, yet no knowledge of its existence or origin by family and friends of greg.
who did put the axe in greg’s hand? and given photos from the scene, which did not include an axe or hatchet, and the hatchet we are shown devoid of blood splatter, and for all we know absent of fingerprints and dna as well.
way to go stubbs, you and your buddies have gotten away with it, so far. tell me this though, are you absolutely sure we will never recover you and your co-conspirator’s bbm trail? or discover who actually purchased the ‘axe’?
@ Sine Nomine – then you better not read the other online newpaper for this City because it states the same thing in it’s article front page.
so tell me pineview farmer, why then did the rcmp or iio choose to destroy all rcmp bbms and cell calls of the members involved then?
your reference to a cousin seems to be mudslinging, i cannot see how it is related to anything we are discussing.
Why don’t you explain where this “new” axe come from. Who’s doing the mud slinging? I’m stating facts, you are throwing garbage out there that you have no idea of what you talking about.People like yourself are just playing off your imagination not caring about how it affects any of the people who are affected by it.
“Why don’t you explain where this “new” axe come from.”
this is my point, the rcmp never showed us where this mysterious brand new hatchet came from.
the shooter, warwick, testified that he saw greg pull the hatchet from under his outerwear, and with some difficulty removed wrappings from it.
the articles documented at the scene as presented in the iio’s report included plastic pieces and a sheath.
as well a cell phone, even though warwick, and the other 3 members as well i believe, all testified they did not see a phone in greg’s hand at any time, nor did they recognize that he was speaking to sgt anderson on that ‘unseen’ phone in the time immediately before they shot him, and possibly when they shot him.
the hatchet photo you previously mentioned, was it of the hatchet on the ground, in the location described by the diagram on page 16 of the iio’s report?

pineview farmer, please address my question, why did the rcmp and/or the iio choose to destroy all the bbms and cell calls of the involved members?
you claim i do not know what happened, that suggests that you think you do know. please enlighten me.
“i” am not claiming “you” don’t know what happened. “i” do not know entirely what happened on that horrible day. But “i” do know that several of “your” comments are wrong, and “i” have no desire to enlighten a person who makes false claims on such a serious and unfortunate incident. Several people have been affected by this tragedy, family, friends and public servants.so please don’t comment on certain things you know nothing about.
pineview farmer, i recognize there are things i don’t know about this tragic incident, and so, i search for answers.
i would very much appreciate your opinion of why the bbms and calls were deleted. the only reason i can think of is that they were deleted so that no one could see them, so we could never see the evidence of the crime the rcmp committed.
you have not responded to my question regarding the picture of the hatchet you spoke of.
you claim i am wrong, and you claim ‘some family member signed the photo’, the relevance of which escapes me.
if you go to the ‘justice for greg matters’ facebook page, you can see that your comments suggest you feel greg’s mother is somehow ‘wrong’ as well.
“Gregory and myself didn’t know what the hell was going on. So Greg and his brother had a fight, about the third one in all of their lives. Why didn’t the police leave it alone. Both boys went home, the police must have been bored because they blew this up to a mountain out of a mole hill. We thought that this was over and then the police start phoning us for Greg to walk to the road out of the driveway. Its still so hard to believe! Greg and myself didn’t have any idea. Greg went to his cabin, while I waited for a phone call from legal aid. I started for the cabin about 2:00 to tell Greg that I haven’t heard from the legal aid yet. The police had barged the locked gate and broke it before I went up! I still wasn’t aware of anything, didn’t see the broken gate, the gunman follows me into the cabin driveway and totally assaults me, then throw me in jail..My neighbour goes to pick Greg up and they wouldn’t let her go and then they shot my innocent son…He didn’t have any idea that they were laying in the grass waiting for him..waiting to kill him….Wow, I start on my story and can’t quit. I don’t beleive for a minute that Greg even had the hatchet. I believe that they planted it there after…Well thanks for listening to me…Sincerely..A very sad mama”
pineview farmer, your opinions/answers with regard to my evidence destruction question would be very much appreciated.
