Election Legislation Introduced to Extend Municipal Terms

Wednesday, March 26, 2014 @ 2:28 PM

Prince George, B.C.- Legislation has been introduced  in Victoria that will  extend municipal terms of office to  4 years, up from the current  3.

The general  voting  day will be  moved to  October,  from the current November.  That change will take place in 2018.

The legislation also  calls on  candidates to file their  campaign finance disclosure statements  within 90 days ( rather than 120)  following  an election.

Other  changes include:

* Ensuring candidate campaign disclosures are published online.

* Ensuring the sponsorship information is published on all election advertisements.

* Requiring third-party advertising sponsors to register and disclose their expenditures.

* Establishing a new compliance and enforcement role for Elections BC.

The legislation will apply to elected officials in municipalities, regional districts, the Islands Trust, parks boards and school boards. If passed, the legislation will take effect for upcoming general local elections on Nov. 15, 2014.

I hope it also includes effective recall legislation.
Can you imagine being stuck with the likes of the current crew for more than three years? Even three years is more than enough!

There is no additional recall features in the bill. sorry to say

The term should remain at 3 years. Is Victoria and the MLAs going to force this on us? Whatever happened to democracy!
Our present PG Council has done enough financial damage already and their 3 years is not up yet. Heaven help us if they are elected for 4 years instead of 3. They will put PG into bankruptcy!

The legislation has been introduced. The Liberals have a majority, and the deal is done.

We will be going to four year terms whether we like it or not.

Gus – where are you? Your comments are needed on this topic.

I think Gus is pouting..lol

Ben told him to slow down on his comments and he hasn’t posted since..lol

So even less accountability than we have now from our politicians? Even more reason for them to make things up during elections just to get elected.
