Conifex Mackenzie Served with Strike Notice
Prince George, B.C. – Conifex in Mackenzie has been served with 72 hour strike notice by the United Steelworkers local 1-424.
“The members ship voted down a tentative agreement, then voted in favour of strike action” says Frank Everitt, President of Local 1-424. He says some tweaks were made to the memorandum, but when it went to the membership for a second time, it was rejected by 58% of those who voted.
72 hour strike notice was served yesterday
“It is a very complicated issue” says Everitt “we are doing our best to try and rectify it.”
The agreement is a template package and has already been accepted at the Conifex operation in Ft. St. James. Everitt says the main issue in Mackenzie is centred on working conditions.
There are 200 members of USW at the Conifex sawmill in Mackenzie. The union has planned a meeting with the membership on Sunday.

Wow. Weren’t they shut down a year or 2 ago? I would shut it down again. Beg for a job then go on strike.
I agree PGguy1234, the fact that Mackenzie is up and running again at all should make the idea of a strike a last resort. And when the mills close down again it will be all the fault of the company.
Here in Terrace the unions wouldn’t let West Fraser put in new kilns during the strike in 2007. Mill never fully reopened under WF, was closed and sold; thankfully its running again under new owners (Chinese). And WF closed Eurocan as well, which has always made me wonder if we lost the synergy of the two plants together.
Regardless of who owns the company…..if the working conditions are bad then the workers have a right to try and get things to change.
The management group will go on and on how they have the right to manage. Well….you know what? We…the workers…have the RIGHT to COMPETENT management. Seriously….some of the morons they put in charge of things shouldn’t even get out of bed in the morning….
Always more to the story, have to wonder just what there thinking and are they being told everything some times the followers get feed BS
