Back To School

Prince George, B.C.- Just a reminder that Spring Break is over, and that means students with School District 57 will be heading back to class today.
The return to class includes the Spruceland Elementary students who started Spring break half a day early because of some smoke in their building. That problem (overheated bearing in a heating system) has been repaired, and classes are back to normal today.
Drivers are reminded to obey the school zone speed limits, and watch for those young people who may be distracted as they listen to their iPods, or are texting and walking to school.
School buses are back on the roads, and those double flashing red lights mean traffic, in both directions, must stop.

drive carefully.
I can’t believe they just had 2 weeks off and this Friday is a non-instructional day already.
It’s in the contract.
If you disagree with the school Calendar feel free to go to the open public meetings held at the board office each year. These meetings decide dates for NID’s, spring break, future meetings, etc.
This next NID is not a Provincial NID, so it was certainly put there by the SD57 board. Perhaps, you should go ask them why they chose to put it here.
No, it doesn’t matter to me because my children are all through school. This just seems strange that they want all this extra money and everything but have to take a day off right after a two week break. Next they will want two weeks off at Christmas, and a couple of months off in the summer. Oh wait, they get that too!!
Schools close for July and August so the children can aid in the harvest. Or so I understand.

I will assume the “they” you speak of is teachers. First of all, the teachers do not make the calendar. As a teacher (not in sd57) myself I would rather have it earlier in the year where I feel I can put some of the skills learned to use earlier. Secondly, the school board in consultation with anyone that shows up to the calendar meetings with an idea get to make the calendar.
I have no idea why you blame the NID on teachers other than misinformation or blind hate.
Smooth: “Perhaps, you should go ask them why they chose to put it here. “
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where they ‘put them’. There’s one NID per month as far as I understand. Because of the high frequency, they’re going to fall close to holidays.
JohnnyBelt, I have never really thought about it that way but you are pretty spot on.
There are 6 NID’s and 10 months in the school year, but I don’t think I have ever seen one in December or the month spring break falls, and a June NID would have very little time for teachers to learn and put to use, so lets call it 6 of the 7 other full months.
One NID is set Provincially
One NID is a planning day for the following year (usually in May)
One NID is for report card writing
The other 3 are more flexible.
Considering Family day was added in February we are much more likely to have them near a holiday no matter what happens.
