Off Street Parking Rates To Be Rolled Back

Tuesday, April 1, 2014 @ 4:05 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Off-street parking rates in downtown Prince George will be cheaper in a month's time.

Not everyone on Prince George City Council wanted to see off-street parking rates rolled back to their 2013 levels May 1st.

Facing fourth and final reading of the amendment to the Comprehensive Fees and Charges bylaw, Councilor Cameron Stolz and Mayor Shari Green opposed the rollback.

Councilor Stolz wanted to hold off on passing the amendment until there was a complete review of the costs involved in providing off-street parking.  Stolz was referring to a letter from the Downtown Business Improvement Association   which called on Council to hold off on making a change until all of the issues had been examined.  The DBIA is concerned the roll back will create a shortfall and that downtown property owners will be expected to make up the difference through increased contributions to the Off-street Parking Reserve.

But the two votes against the roll back were not enough to stop the move, so, as of May 1st;   the fees for off-street parking in downtown Prince George will revert to their 2013 levels.  The rates will be boosted by 25% as of January 1st, 2015 and by 15% in 2016.

Another nail in the downtown coffin. Let’s make sure the civil servants have cheap parking while the business owners pick up the tab.

Those are fighting words, Axman. Just wait until the Civil servants get to work and start responding…

Well with the RCMP Building openning this month and the City realigning the pay for parking lot across the street to restricted parking for there employees. Now how is this really going to affect the parking in the “Downtown Core”. They took how many paid stalls away and gave them to there employee’s I’m guessing at this time free for there use as no other City employee is required to pay to go to work in the City. Is this a benifit and if so, who too, and / or is this just plain old progress……

getagripreally: I wonder too if this is claimed on their income tax as a benefit? Sure looks like one to me.

Imagine that, the City, not contributing anything to the off-street parking reserve and using a pile of the stalls…

Ah, but it gets worse. The parking lot that will be for the RCMP at 4th and Vancouver is not owned by the city. They rent it.

Who cares. Downtown is a dump with crappy shopping, harassing hoboes and crime. I go downtown to eat at the Keg once in a while. That’s about it for me and downtown. Buy stuff on-line or at the mall or other stores that have free parking.

It’s curious that the RCMP members and staff will be getting free parking in the parking area that was used (and paid for) by the workers in the HSBC building. If these people have to pay so should the rcmp and staff!

downtown is a dump? apparently u haven’t been to the keg in a while because if you had you would see some thriving infrastructure. Or maybe you just chose to focus on the negative and ignore anything that might vary from your close minded opinion.

My close minded option is based on my experiences going downtown. I have been there. You call that thriving. Wow. You don’t get out much do you. A hotel on hold, a wood building with a sorted past, a new RCMP building (Really Cool Money Palace)and that’s about it. DO I want the downtown to be like that? No. It is (like just about every downtown in Canada) and that’s it. And I need to pay good money to park there to spend money when I can go down the road and park for free and spend money. I will say that the hobo problems seem to be less than they used to be. And of course they chased the hookers down the road to the VLA so we can call that an improvement.

You suggest that PG’s downtown is like just about every downtown in Canada and then you suggest that phje doesn’t get out much? Wow.
