Prince George, B.c.- The Ministry of the Environment has issued a Dust Advisory for Prince George.
24 hour rolling averages for coarse particulates ( PM 10) were at 58 micrograms per cubic metre at the Plaza 400 downtown, 42 µg/m3 at College Heights and 53 µg/m3 at BCR at 10 this morning, The Provincial objective is 50 µg/m3.
At the same time, the 24 hour PM2.5 ( fine particulate) rolling average was 14 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site, 10 µg/m3 at College Heights. The provincial objective is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
The high levels are mainly due to road dust in the bowl area.
MoE Meteorologist Dennis Fudge says the advisory will be in effect until tomorrow morning, although an update will be issued at 4:30 this afternoon. He says it is possible the predicted overnight precipitation could reduce the dust levels.

With snow removal, the City’s plan seemed to be “leave it where it is, it will melt when and if Spring ever gets here!”
With our roads now covered with gravel, sand and dust, it would appear that the City’s street cleaning plan seems to be “leave it where it is, it will wash away when it rains!”
Ahhh… dust advisories, a sure sign that spring has arrived in Prince George.
Free bus rides?
Catch-22. I heard the city is not allowed to sweep during air advisories. Now what ?
The city wets the streets before they sweep. Maybe look at all the private companies sweeping the parking lots.
Zum, has nothing to do with sweeping, more with people not being able to drive straight and stay off the road edges kicking up the dust, and flying through parking lots at road speeds.
Middlefinger was commenting on the bylaw that does not allow sweeping during dust or air advisories, but this does not apply to YRB or federal regulated industries like CN, they can sweep all they like and thumb their noses at PG regulators
Agreed slinky. PG Drivers seem oblivious or unable to stay off the dust strips.
ALERT ALERT ALERT: FACE MASKS IN EFFECT…I wonder: has anyone in Prince George taken the PG City and Pulpmills to court for the undeniably dangerous air quality and suffocating people who work and live in the bowl and area? I know I have lung, chest and breathing problems from this place. I wonder how many people are in the hospital right now who can’t breath????????
But, but, but PG Girl, suing Pulp mills and refineries in court would be like biting the hand that feeds us. That smelly smell we smell is the smell of money.
What’s our health compared with… gasp… that all important money? (sarcasm off)
Just curious, why hasn’t the city looked into the use of road salt in the winter as a way to help improve snow management AND as a way to help reduce air pollution in the spring?
There are obviously pros and cons to salt and sand, but the air quality issues from all of that residual sand in the spring are simply too significant to ignore IMHO.
I think I smell and breath a “Erin Brockovich” story………it always is about the money..cough cough…oohh there goes my lung
Without all the industry, there would not be a PG to complain about. Just saying…..
They are usually cleaning the street by now…why not this year! I do agree that they are waiting for the rain….this is awful with people not breathing right…what kind of Mayor is this!
Can’t be spending all that Canada Winter Games money too far ahead of the games.
Wait and see the spectacular streets and everything else around these parts leading up to the opening ceremonies.
sunnyday 1. Stop and think for a moment. The weather has everything to do with the sweeping. Have you seen any private contractors sweeping until this week ? No ? It must be just as hard for them to sweep at -13 as well as the city. Now there is an air advisory and the city is not allowed to sweep. (everyone else can).
But I totally agree, it must be the mayor’s fault. You must have a pot-hole or two on your street to blame the mayor for as well.
Middle finger, no one can sweep within city limits, my machine sits idle until the advisory is lifted unless I want a 1,500 dollar fine or whatever the bylaw allows them to slap me with.
It is those companies under federal and provincial mandates that can sweep if they want like CN and YRB, although they are supposed to ‘work’ with municipalities
A couple years ago CN kept sweeping down in 1st ave yard during an advisory and the city couldn’t do diddly
Sunny day, this is the earliest my machine has gone to work since it started sweeping in 2009
Maybe the city could phone every vacuum cleaner business in the country and get all their sales people can come to PG to demonstrate their wares.
