Canucks Fire Gillis
Vancouver, B.C.- Mike Gillis is no longer the President or GM of the Vancouver Canucks.
In a statement issued this hour, the chair of Canucks Sports and entertainment, Francesco Aquilini said it was time for a change in leadership:
"The Vancouver Canucks had success under Mike's leadership, and we nearly reached our ultimate goal; but I believe we have reached a point where a change in leadership and new voice is needed."
The statement went on to say; "I also want to thank our fans for their support for the Vancouver Canucks through a difficult and frustrating season. We haven’t met their expectations or ours. We are committed to bringing the Stanley Cup to Vancouver for our fans and we will continue to do everything possible to reach that goal."
The Canucks did not make the playoffs this year, officially eliminated from playoff contention with a 3-0 loss to Anaheim last night.

Now get rid of the coach too. That’s a good start.
About bloody time……:)
Firing Gillis cost Aquallini $8 million. Firing Torts would cost a further $8 million. Iâm not sure ownership wants to bleed cash of $16 million since there are still on the hook for a percentage of Luongoâs contract.
If they keep Torts, expect more of what you saw this season.
Also, it may be the first time in six seasons that theyâve missed the playoffs, but if you witnessed the previous two showings, they didnât bother to show up even when in the playoffs. They won a single game in 8.
Agreed Pylot. Some will try and blame this on one missed playoffs, but the Canucks have gone downhill since they lost the Cup to the Bruins.
Not to mention Gillis completely bungled the goalie situation. That’s enough reason for firing alone.
I’ve heard a rumor, that the Canucks have been given permission by the Cougars to talk to Mr. Thompson, he would be a good fit.
