Horgan Continues to Campaign in One Man Race
Prince George, B.C. – With Mike Farnworth bowing out of the NDP leadership race, it is very likely John Horgan will take over the top spot by acclamation. Farnworth , who had yet to formally file as a candidate, was the only other person in the running but has withdrawn and thrown his support behind Horgan.
Lois Boone, a long time New Democrat who served as the MLA in Prince George (two different ridings) from 1986 to 2001 has some mixed feelings about yesterday's developments “As someone who has already publicly stated I was supporting John, I am of course happy to hear that he could be the new leader by acclamation”. But, Boone adds, if Horgan is to take the post by acclamation, it will be disappointing not to have a leadership race “There is something about a leadership race, an excitement, that will be missed.”
What won’t be missed is the cost of a leadership convention.
It is estimated the September convention could cost about $350 thousand dollars. The New Democrats financial report to Elections B.C. show the party finished 2013 with nearly $3 million in debt.
The cost to enter the leadership race is $25 thousand dollars, and the deadline for throwing your hat into the ring is May 1st. If no other candidates step forward, Horgan would be named leader of the party by acclamation and that would force Adrian Dix to make an earlier than expected exit.
With nearly all members of the New Democrat caucus standing behind John Horgan, it would be very surprising to see anyone else enter the race.
But, Horgan says he is taking nothing for granted, and will continue his campaign “Winning in 2017 starts with building a strong and energized party in every corner of our province,” said Horgan. “And that’s what I plan to do.”

So Horgan is the only one who wants to lead the NDP party????
Hmmmmmm
Kinda like trying to find someone to lead a sports team that hasn’t won a game in 10 years, with no prospect of improving…
Kinda like team NDP you think?
It must be getting pretty bad in the BC NDP organization, when a leader is chosen by acclamation. Nobody else cares to lead this party. Did Horgan really apply to be the leader, or was he just applying to get a custodial job at the office and filled out the wrong form?
I wonder if they still have the 35% popularity vote? I bet even that has dwindled down.
They need a charismatic leader, that can rally up the troupe. Not saying my fearless leader, Christie has all that going for her. The last female premiere in the country. She certainly not in the news and making waves, quietly doing little things.
I like Horgan and I think he would be great for this province.
“The New Democrats financial report to Elections B.C. show the party finished 2013 with nearly $3 million in debt.”
They can’t even run their party debt free!
Hey No Way…your Republican Party of BC a.k.a. BC Liberals are also in debt. Do you want to post the same comment about them. I believe you would not. Please do your homework before making snap judgments.
Lois Boone? Where’s Mr. Ramsay (Ramsee? Ramsey? Ramsaye)? I’d like to hear his comment.
One has to look no further than the current stance of the last two leaders of the party who formed government to see how impossible for them to govern in the foreseeable future unless they can reign in the looney left wing of the left wing party.
Glen Clark is one of the right hand men of the richest guy in the province and now makes enough money to build his own back deck. Even if he does still hold a membership card it is doubtful if he would welcomed with open arms at any dipper function.
Mike Harcourt quit the party outright.
At the end of the day it is a one man race for the permanent seat as leader of the opposition.
Dix . Now Horgan . When are the NDP going to get it ? Quebec just got it . Get some one with a back ground in the sciences . Andrew weaver won his seat on merit . He’s a Nobel prize winner . He’s a team leader . Look what’s happening in Ottawa with a mailboy in charge . Draft Andrew Weaver . He can think circles around Christie in his sleep .
Clark is a career politician who attended three universities and never graduated with a degree . Would you put her in charge of your life boat ? I wouldn’t put her in charge of a mcdonalds . Check her out in Wikipedia . Have a laugh and wonder at the intelligence of the voters of bc . The NDP is full of teachers . You’d think they could come up with an entrance exam for leaders and check list .
Andrew Weaver? Any relation to Charlie Weaver? Funny guy, Charlie (in his time).
Dix will soon have lots of time to “create” the university records for any potential dipper leaders.
Harbinger, why would you want to know Mr. Ramsay’s comments. Another attempt to disparage a decent man like Prince George did for such a long time. Leave your hatred in the past, like it did any good back then.
It’s andrew j. Weaver . Professor , scientist , Nobel winner . World class mathamation . B.C. Green Party mla . A giant amongst politicians on par with Angela Merkel and some one mocks . Too bad for the NDP that they could not include him . The NDP needs to up its game . Not going to happen using old retreads .
Sophie: “Harbinger, why would you want to know Mr. Ramsay’s comments. Another attempt to disparage a decent man like Prince George did for such a long time.”
I remember the big “Recall Ramsey” campaign in the late 90’s. Good times.
Paul Ramsay…worst..politician…ever. I never hated the man but he was easily the most inept political figure to come out of PG.
You know the NDP are in dire straits when their best leader in decades quits the party in disgust. Not a huge Christy Clark fan but those of you taking shots at her for the lack of a university degree…She’s the Premier of BC, what are you doing?
Good times huh with the recall…divided a community all because there were some who were homophobic and the last trying to bring a government down. Sad to hear you thought they were good. I see attitudes have not changed much!
You must have been a part of a different recall campaign. I don’t remember anything about ‘homophobia’, I just remember an incompetent politician that people wanted out.
Hey, JB. I came across a “Recall Ramsey” bumper sticker in my garage a while back. Any offers if I find it again?
NoWay says “”The New Democrats financial report to Elections B.C. show the party finished 2013 with nearly $3 million in debt.”
“They can’t even run their party debt free!”
Maybe it’s because the NDP wasn’t in a position to use taxpayer money for funding an “ethnic vote” campaign like the Liberals?
Maybe someone should send the party Svend’s phone number. All is forgiven. Right?
All this talk about the NDP and not a peep from people#1.. Was peeps a victim of the latest 250 kaizan??
Seems like Peeps disappeared right around the same time that BeingHuman appeared!
I’m wondering……??
