Trevor Linden New President of Canucks

Wednesday, April 9, 2014 @ 9:16 AM

Vancouver, B.C.- Trevor Linden  has been named the new President of the Vancouver Canucks. He returns  to lead the team that he played on for 16 seasons, including seven as team captain.

The news came in a statement moments ago  from the Chair of the Canucks Sports and Entertainment, Francesco Aquillini.  "“It's my honour to officially welcome Trevor Linden home in his new role as President of Hockey Operations for the Canucks. We believe in Trevor's leadership abilities. His 20 years of NHL experience including seven as team captain, his role as NHLPA President, community leader and businessman offers a very special skill set; one that will positively shape the direction of this club in the future.”

Linden has been named President, Hockey Operations and Alternate Governor, NHL. In his role, Linden will be responsible for all hockey operations, including the coaching and scouting staffs, player procurement and development, and minor league affiliations and operations.

Since retiring after 19 seasons in the NHL, Linden has resided in Vancouver where he has led a number of successful business ventures ranging from commercial/residential development projects to fitness club chains. He has also remained involved in the community through the Trevor Linden Foundation.

“Today is a real honour" says Linden "I came to Vancouver 26 years ago and I have never left. I love this city. It is my home and the Canucks have always been part of my family.”

“I’m passionate about the Canucks and I want to win – just like our fans. I believe in this team and share the organization’s commitment to excellence on and off of the ice.  I am looking forward to getting started – getting to know everyone in the organization, and working together to win the Stanley Cup for this great city and Province.”

Happy, Happy, Happy…Congrats Trevor..

Way to Trevor, now the Canucks may have a shot at the cup….

They didn’t win one with him as their captain so why do you believe that they will win one with him as the President of the club?

I don’t think there is much doubt that Linden is a class act and that this move will play to the nostalgia of Canuck fans, but this is also a much different role he is jumping into than what he was responsible for on the ice.

Pro sports is littered with examples of great players who couldn’t repeat their on-ice or on-field success in the front office when given the opportunity.

To succeed, he’ll have to assemble a heck of a crew around him and he’ll have to understand what he can and can’t do in the position that he occupies. I think the closer he gets to the ice-level stuff, the greater the chance of failure. He’ll have to learn how to separate the sport from the business. Some guys could do that well and others couldn’t.

And your point is what exactly PGguy1234?

John McDonough, Pres of the Blackhawks… never played the game whatsoever.

Cam Neely, Pres of Bruins… never won a Stanley Cup as a player.
