Bus Incident Near Terrace

Tuesday, April 8, 2014 @ 5:02 PM

Terrace, B.C. – High wind and falling trees caused some tense moments for a school bus driver and students in a rural area east of Terrace Monday.

Terrace RCMP say the bus was carrying students home on Bornite Mountain Road when gusty wind brought down trees in front of and on top of the vehicle just before 4 p.m.  Hydro lines also came down near the bus, trapping some of the 14 youth.

“A bystander said that a couple of the youth had gotten off the bus when it stopped.  Another bystander saw a tree come crashing down towards one of the girls. He selflessly tackled the girl and absorbed the hit from the tree and hydro wires himself.  He luckily only suffered minor cuts.  It was an unbelievable act of heroism,” said Constable Shane Nicoll of the Terrace RCMP.

Nicoll described the area as a war zone.

BC Hydro was able to cut power to the lines and RCMP were then able to guide the bus driver, children, and bystanders to a safer area.

Thank you to the bystander who shielded the child and who took the hit from the falling tree and wires…. Glad you were there

Damned lucky no one was electrocuted. It sounds as though the bus driver allowed some of the kids to leave the bus before the lines came down, I hope it was before. It is never a good idea to leave the relative safety of a rubber tired vehicle if power lines have come down on or near the vehicle.
