Girls’ Run For Fun Hits Its Stride

Saturday, April 12, 2014 @ 3:52 AM

Prince George, BC – For the fourth year in a row, the RCMP's Victim Services and Community Policing Units are teaming up to offer a unique program for local girls…

Dubbed the 'Girls' Run for Fun' program, participants aged 10 to 15 will learn about much more than running over the course of seven weeks, as they work towards a goal of wrapping up with a 5K challenge race.

Community Policing Coordinator, Linda Parker, says the program is designed to increase self-esteem and empower the girls to reach healthy fitness goals.  She says the participants will meet twice per week for 75-minute sessions that begin with a guest speaker discussing relevant issues like drug awareness, anti-bullying, and social media safety.

Then, they'll break into training groups, based on ability, and head out on a run.

The program is free and will meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, between 4pm and 5:15pm, from May 6th to June 19th, with a final race and picnic on Saturday, June 21st.

To register a girl for the program, email Parker at lparker@city.pg.bc.ca or Krista Levar at krista.levar@rcmp-grc.gc.ca to request an application.  Or visit the Prince George Community Policing Office at 575 Brunswick Street until April 24th, or the new detachment on Victoria beginning April 28th.
