P. G. The Volunteer City
Prince George, B.C.- The City has described itself as “B.C.’s Northern Capital”, but now, there is a new “branding” for Prince George.
Council has approved, rebranding the City to “The Volunteer City- It’s In Our Nature”.
The rebranding is appropriate says Enhance PG Chair Linda Self, as a recent volunteering report ranked Prince George first when it came to volunteering at 62%, while the provincial average is 45%.
Self told Council, Prince George is known for its, “can do” and “giving” nature and that volunteers can be counted on in all sectors of community life.
In 2015 Prince George will see the largest volunteer effort in its history with over 4500 volunteers working at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. This is in addition to the thousands who volunteer for hundreds of organizations every year .
Enhance PG says branding Prince George, “The Volunteer City” before 2015 will “help build the identity of the City, and showcase Prince George in a positive light provincially, nationally and internationally.”

Excellent, accurate, and positive to brand ourselves in this manner!
I agree.
Of course that means now I can no longer take our friends visiting from out of town to the Court House and say that it is the Capitol Building of Northern BC. ;-)
Did we ever have a flag for Northern BC?
So how much will it cost to make the change? How many items do we have that need to be reprinted, videos that need to be adjusted, etc.? And, dare I ask, what will be the cost of that?
Worth every penny (oops, nickel) though to get rid of that inappropriate “brand”.
Like the new branding, however once again P.G is almost in the center of the province, this would make us central not northern. If there isn’t a flag the city should put on a contest for one.
Excellent idea. I like it.
The City has a Coat of Arms and a flag – check the City web site.
Gosh I remember a jingle from a few years ago “The Center of it All”!
About the volunteering! I would like to thank the neighbour who unselfishly volunteered to fill the pot holes on our street. That should free up the City workers to do some other street.
My suggestion for the flag, it will be all white.

Nice to see the term **Northern Capital** go the way to the Doo Doo bird (Raphus cucullatus).
Get away from this branding idea, do we really need to waste so much energy and resources trying to build this brand.
How about focusing on positive actions to improve ourselves and let that be our image to the rest of the province, country and world.
We are very well branded about being the crime capital of Canada. What should we do about it. You’d figure it would be pretty easy for the RCMP, since the activities are centered around a hand full of criminals, and they all seem to be known to them. Just send in the swat team, keep hammering these people until they leave or stop. Call in the military, if you need too. That will give the city an image. It might not be the most popular image when it is happening, but ten years down the road, we will be recognized as a town that won’t take crap like that. Take the grey out of law enforcement, make criminals pay.
@Palopu: What’s a doo doo bird? My vote goes to the Seagull. Second choice is the pigeon.
In terms of branding and reputation of the City of PG, the change has to come from within.
Until people in this City can find a positive attitude and get rid of the crappy culture of negativity, all the targetted advertising campaigns and slogans in the world won’t change anything.
How about, “The city so great they named a future king after us”? Kinda like New York. The city so great they named it twice.
@He spoke, “…make criminals pay”. Ha ha ha . Tell it to the judge. Convince the judge you’re his mentor. Nice chuckle tho. Thanx.
Nice! Nature and volunterism – two things that make this city special
“once again P.G is almost in the center of the province, this would make us central not northern.”
When I came here in 1973, all the signs, the articles, the verbal communications told me I was in the Central Interior of the province.
In fact, the name of the firm that hired me started with the words “Central Interior ….. “
If this is northern and we are supposed to be the capital, then we are following the led of the province, which has its capital not only in the southern-most part of the province, but it is located south of the 49th parallel and should have been in the USA.
So, we all know what we think of capitals which are far away, situated in another climate. We were setting ourselves up for the same scorn.
