Rogers Takes Post in Vernon
Prince George, B.C.- Former Prince George Mayor Dan Rogers, is the new General Manager for the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
His background in local government and work experience in communications are being considered valuable assets for growing the business community in Vernon.
Rogers was a popular Councilor, topping the polls when he was elected in 1999 and again in 2002. He ran against incumbent Mayor Colin Kinsley in 2005, but fell short of that goal.
He took another shot at the top job in the city's government in 2008 and was victorious. His effort for re-election fell short in 2011, when Shari Green garnered 1637 more votes.
There was wide speculation that Rogers planned to run again for a position on Council in the upcoming election this fall, but news of this new job skuttles that rumour.
He co-chaired the City's bid for the 2015 Winter Games and championed a plan to improve Downtown Prince George and was instrumental in the development of the trail systems in Prince George.

Good for Dan he is moving on to better places and away from the stinch of the green spender.
Is Mr. Rogers leaving dirty luggage behind … the all NEW RCMP station…
later on the 2015 Canada Games after game deficits / support required ….draws a concern to his PG Exit.
Good Luck Mr. Rogers .
This is such a loss for PG. Dan is a great guy and has done a lot for PG. He will be missed.
Best of luck and thank you Dan Rogers for all you have done to make PG a better place for all creatures.
I agree Say Say Say….
Rogers nearly bankrupted this city. He leaves a legacy of Debt.
Lynn Hall will be just like Dan Rogers! Cant make a decision and will cost us a fortune.
Just like the design he made on Pay Parking. Up Up Up!
Less we forget how much more Dan put the City in debt. Good luck Dan but maybe Vernon should of checked his references.
Good luck Dan, hope Vernon turns out to be a good move.
Nice guy. Bad mayor.
To all the negative posters, shame on you. Dan Rogers is a good guy and it’s PG’s loss to Vernon. While you list his expenses and critique his achievements do you support the current mayor and your ever increasing fees and agenda?
I for one think Dan is a good guy and wish him much success in his new posting.
Best wishes to the Roger family
The first design was done under Kinsley led council and was a done deal before Dan was elected Mayor.
Most of the existing council were on council when Dan was Mayor and as I understand it all of them got to vote. His only mistake was believing he had a team working to achieve what was best for PG then and in the future, not a team that was working behind his back to make him look bad for their gain.
When we lose a person of his dedication to another community our City loses.
Someone: “While you list his expenses and critique his achievements do you support the current mayor and your ever increasing fees and agenda? “
I think the answer to that is a pretty resounding ‘no’. We haven’t had a good mayor is quite some time.
I think most people would agree Dan is a good guy and his heart is in the right place, just not a great Mayor.
I think this was a good move for Dan. A lot of people I know in recent years have relocated to Vernon and none of them have regretted the move. Its a beautiful city in a great location.
Dan was an excellent city councilor and did an alright job as mayor. I think the way the RCMP station was handled was his major draw back, but at least he always promised a referendum on the PAC should it ever get to that stage of serious consideration.
The thing I appreciated most about Dan was his commitment to the city trails and the fact that he was always open to listening to the views of others. These were qualities we have lost in local politics since his exit. I think Dan was an excellent person and its a big loss for PG with his departure.
To listen to the various posters on this site, I don’t think that we could ever get a Mayor that is “good”. Like every person, whether they admit it or not, all politicians have some good and some bad ideas, the trick is to find someone who has more good ideas than bad. With the vitriol expended by people against those that put themselves and their families in the spotlight by agreeing to serve the public, I am surprised that anyone would. Perhaps the fact that people are willing to put up with all the negative just to run for public office should call their “sanity” into question. :-)
Thanks Danno, for saving the planet by building that hot water pipe for $17 million dollars down George Street. $17 million? Never mind Dan, me and other taxpayers will pick up the tab for it. It’s on us. Don’t try this crap in Vernon. Take pity on them.
Does anyone know what the characteristics of a good Mayor are?
Let me try the following:
Leadership, political savvy, administrative skill, the ability to attract business, jobs and tourists.
Figure out which Mayor over the time that you were aware of civic politics, was best in those characteristics and any other qualities you wish to add.
When you go back, remember that the population of Prince George dropped for decades. The 2011 census was the first one when the population increased. That was the third year that Dan was in office.
Kinsley’s legacy with respect to population increase was to question the census figures during two counts.
The Mayor is not a dictator. The City direction is set by the vote of 9 people. The Mayor is only one of them.

Well said Gus
Best wishes Dan, you deserve it
Oh, and forgot to send along congrats on the new job and best wishes to Dan and the entire Rogers family on their upcoming move.
So, I count 5 people on here who voted or would have voted for Green.
Thanks Say Say Say , yourkiddingme, NoWay, JohnnyBelt, and Harbinger for helping to put the current Mayor in here seat.
Thanks for the improvement, writes I, tongue in cheek. :-(
Well, no. I didn’t vote for Green. Believe it or not, I voted for Rogers the last election because he was the lesser of two evils… but not by much. I think Green will go down in history as being a worse mayor than Rogers.
Welcome back, gus! ;-)
Just my opinion as an ex PG resident, but I think Rogers was so far ahead of Green, it wasn’t even comparable.
Experience, professionalism and intellect, I think he was far superior. He did have a reputation of not being able to make a decision, but in that position, I’d rather have that then someone who jumps in without even considering the impacts of options B, C and D. I sometimes get the sense that the current council can’t even get past option A.
Dan put thousands of hours in to make this city a better place. Vernon’s gain our loss…
I don’t personally know Dan rogers but I do know his tenure as Mayor of PG cost us taxpayers a ton of money for next to nothing in return and we will be paying for those mistakes for years to come still….the only two things I agree with him on was the new cop shop and the 2015 games everything else was a bust imo
Not a + for Prince George.Another family leaving PG.Good luck Dan.
For sure, our loss and Vernon’s gain!
Me? Voting for Danno? I don’t think so, pal. Based on the opticals of a secret voting ballot, that sure is awful presumptuous of you gus. On the whole, I would rather have a benevolent ayatollah than any mayoralty candidate that was offered.
“I don’t personally know Dan rogers but I do know his tenure as Mayor of PG cost us taxpayers a ton of money for next to nothing in return and we will be paying for those mistakes for years to come”
Can you at least give us two mistakes that cost us a ton of money? Then compare them to the “mistakes” of the previous Mayor who was borrowing more and more money to patch the streets instead of increasing taxes or doing the job properly and efficiently. Not to talk about the lack of maintenance of rods in general as well as buildings such as the cop shop, Kin Centre ice arenas, moving the public works yard, not reducing garbage through recycling and thus costing increases in tipping charges, choosing the wrong location for the cop shop which will mean altering streets and intersections to the tune of another 4 million or so bucks yet to come …. and on and on it goes.
Try to be a bit objective ….. please ….
The last half decent mayor that Prince George had was John Backhouse.
It is somewhat humorous to see the spin that goes on compared to reality. When you look at the city’s financial statements it is interesting to see that the city’s debt actually went down over the three years Roger was mayor. Since then, despite her now infamous declaration that she was going to cut 10% in every department, our new mayor has actually passed a budget that has seen an increase in spending every single year. Did she go to the NDP school of finance?
The problem is that we have too many people that look at topics such as City debt, for instance, who really do not understand a financial statement.
They do not know what people in other cities pay for taxes for the simple reason that they do not understand the concept of a median house which prevents them from making real comparisons among various cities.
In fact, when one gets right down to it, probably half of our general population does not understand the difference between mean and median.
When we have a population which does not understand some of the fundamentals, how can we expect them to speak with understanding about a topic.
But, I really do not fault the population. That is the situation we find ourselves in. We simply have a situation of an informed public who are asked to take part in a democratic “conversation” about their environment, whether it is social, economic or environmental, which affect their life, but cannot properly do so because they are actually not as informed as some people think they are.
It is really the job of those who we have placed in various positions of trust by virtue of them being elected or them working in organizations which influence our lives to a great extent.
Thus we keep hiring communicators, most of whom do not understand that simple fact and keep on preparing missives which fail to address the fact that the average level of understanding is not much higher than grade 8, not because people did not graduate from high school, but because the retention of those things learned at that period in their education is far less than what they knew at one time. It is, after all, rare one has to deal with quadratic equations after HS graduation.
We have no one at City Hall who is interested in putting together well designed, objective data which would lead people to better understand. Thus we develop a population that is suspicious of every action. Rumour rather than facts dominates throughout much of the community.
—————- on another note —————
I agree John Backhouse was the best Mayor since I came to PG. John and Dan will be able to compare notes since both will be residing in Vernon.
We have to remember that there are a lot of things that happen which promotes a city, which cause businesses and institutions to locate here and grow here that are not only influenced by the IPGs of this world, but also individuals sitting in the Mayor’s chair. That is the nature of the work that they do.
