Teachers And Province Still Apart In New Contract
Friday, April 25, 2014 @ 10:18 AM
Victoria- The Chief Negotiator for the BC Public School Employers Association , Peter Cameron, says his group had agreed to a protocol that the negotiations between the government and the teachers in the dispute , not take place in the media, but that agreement was broken by the teachers.
Cameron says the Teachers did not live up to the agreement which has resulted in the Employers also stating their position in the media.
Cameron says our position has not been stated accurately, and that is the one of the reasons why we have moved to this.
Cameron says he would like to see some serious bargaining take place to try and settle the issue.
At present both sides are wide apart in salary and benefit increases.

Strange, I thought the employer side said many months ago that they wanted a 10 year agreement, and tried to justify it. Isn’t that negotiating in public and the media?

If the teachers are to do serious bargaining, get the picket signs out and all together -not those meaningless rotating strikes.
Teachers have given 72 hour strike notice -USE IT! Talking will still be going on the fall if no action is taken.
I am with you Oldman1 ,,, drop the gloves, full out strike ,, what are they afraid of ? I will love too see what the outcome will be, Wish I was a Bookie :) Stop the kicking each other in the ankles, Lets get this into a full scale war . Seriously ,,,PUT UP YOUR SIGNS ,
PS ,,, I have children in school and not for one second do I regard the school district as my childrens baby sitters :) You the parent of the child is . Put aside YOU for a minute , look after your precious first ,, the people that teach them will then take their place :) cheers
Here is a sampling of a few of the latest settlements reported by the Business Council of BC in their FebruaryâMarch 2014 Industrial Relations Bulletin. These settlements show that there are many private and public sector employees who are receiving considerably higher salary increases than what government is offering teachers.

One more thing , union or not , for you that complain about teachers,QUIT your job and teach your own child being that they are so precious , see the income flow in ,see your benefits flowing helping out your family. The Govt can legislate you back to work, what a joke, are they going to throw you all in jail ? take money from you ? wont happen in the END. That wont happen in the end because you will negotiate that it wont happen before going back. Hey I would even miss some days pay to stand out there with you, even risk going to jail. okay as long as I can watch hockey :) many injustices in this corrupt world

Huh?
Explain what Huh means ?
Today the chief “negotiator” for the government cried poor and said the provinces credit rating would be downgraded if they gave the union a raise of COLA plus 3% per year catchup for lost wages (0-0-2 in 98 when teachers gave up a raise to gain classroom size and composition that was then illegally stripped) plus 3 current straight years of zeroes. The 3% catchup would also help to get wages closer, yet still way behind Alberta, Sask, etc. This was quite simply fear mongering and nothing else. The government found $500 million for a roof on BC Place and it didn’t hurt our credit rating.
In the longrun this is all about priorities, corporate welfare, and the misuse of our resources to the benefit of big business. Please read the following to see how mismanaged our resources are.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Credit for this goes to Ray Blessin (Kamloops).
As British Columbians, we are some of the most fortunate people in the world. We share the riches of abundant natural resources and public services, which derive from the taxes we pay.
We also expect private corporations that extract these public resources should pay a fair share of the value of those resources in the taxes they pay.However, a comparison of the value of the resources extracted in 2001 with those extracted in 2012 â and the related tax revenues â exposes an alarming trend about which we should be very concerned. First, letâs take a look at the increases in just three resource-based production values in this province:
⢠In 2001, the value of coal production was $959 million. By 2012, it had grown to $5.06 billion, an increase of 527 per cent.
⢠The value of metals production in 2001 was $1.39 billion. In 2012, it was $2.45 billion, an increase of 76 per cent.
⢠The value of industrial minerals in 2001 was $296 million. That had increased to $472 million in 2012, an increase of 60 per cent.
This represents a huge increase in corporate revenue over the last 10 years or so. In comparison, if we look at the total B.C. natural-resource tax revenue in 2001, we see it was about $4.2 billion. In 2013, that figure had declined to about $2.5 billion.
Looking at natural resources produced in B.C., we find the provincial share of market value has declined from a steady 35 per cent some years ago to about 15 per cent in the last two years, a stark contrast to the huge gains made by private, resource-based corporate interests.
Smooth, you forgot to add “diddly squat” for the BCGEU over 5 years. Again.
Well the negotiator is full of crap…..if the govt. was serious about negotiating they should quit playing games with their “10 year contract” rhetoric. This is just stalling and obfuscating issues. To the “teacher haters” who post here and “know everything” about what teaching entails…home school your kids. To the govt….who continue to bargain in bad faith and manipulation…..just grab a body off the street and throw them in a classroom to babysit…..you will soon see disastrous results. In any event, Joe Public’s children do not need an education anymore…..they won’t get good jobs as Christy Clark has begged the Federal govt. not to suspend the Foreign Worker program.
If you think education is expensive, I suggest you give ignorance a try. It works so well in the third world.
And in the meantime, the kids get held hostage.
Man can you imagine if ALL jobs in BC were unionized? Like some our friends would like.
In this context, “huh” with a question mark means I don’t understand a word you’re typing. Your command of the language is hardly a ringing endorsement of our education system. :)
JohnnyBelt “And in the meantime, the kids get held hostage.”
Glad you’re finally joining the BCTF side. I assume you’re referring to how Justice Griffin found the government provoked a strike in order to enact legislation. The government is following the very same pattern again this time. The government won’t release the sealed documents because they know it proves they did.
You know what happens when you ‘assume’, Smooth.
And according to you, ‘the government’ has been to blame for the last 30 years. Ok then.
