Pitch In For Spring Clean Up
Operation Clean Sweep, REAPS' annual spring clean up goes tomorrow
Prince George, BC – The Executive Director of the Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS) says she's thrilled with the numbers signed up to help with tomorrow's city-wide spring clean up.
Terri McClymont says there are 80 user groups, with approximately 2,000 volunteers, set to pitch in to pick up litter along boulevards, in fields, and shrubs throughout city green spaces.
McClymont says it's not to late to let REAPS know that you'd like to take part, "We encourage people to register with us and then we can provide bags and gloves and, this way, we'll also put down the area where you're picking up litter, so we're not duplicating all those forces that are out there picking up litter, and we'll also arrange to have the garbage picked up."
McClymont says there are still a few areas that REAPS feels are in dire need of some TLC:
- Ospika Boulevard between Range Road and Tyner Boulevard, particularly the bottom of the hill
- at the intersection of Highway 97 and Domano Boulevard, the corner opposite the Scotiabank
- anywhere around high schools and fast food restaurants
To register, email events@reaps.org, or those visiting the Home Show can stop by the REAPS booth to pick up gloves and bags. In addition, several sponsors have banded together to provide eight bins locations for free yard waste drop-off tomorrow. The locations are available on the REAPS website or Facebook page.
The pitch in runs from 10am until 4pm.

theres a bush area down near norwood and porter full of junk like old mattresses. wonder why they don’t clean that up. maybe the city should do that.
…or as the article suggests, get the residents out to lend a hand. Maybe that’s too much to ask.
For what it’s worth, I have seen many people out already picking up garbage. Nice job and thanks to those people!
I wonder if the city is going to clean up all the gravel that on Foothills blvd, or are they going to allow the lawn Moyer to throw those rocks everywhere and at every ones house.
Would not be as much of a problem if more people had pride in the appearance of the city and area they live in, respect for others, a stronger grip on the concept of ethics and morals, and maybe a little class. Too lazy to haul your waste to the landfill or too cheap to pay minimal dumping fees?
Shame on you.

Think I will let the City of Prince George do that…that is why I pay taxes….the roads are filthy dirty STILL!!
There is gravel all over town…it is TERRIBLE. My old Mother almost went for a slid the other day on it….just awful of the city!!
Maybe homeowners can get their neighbourhoods zoned gravel pits to avoid big taxes. Ya got the proof.
There is a woman that walks on O grady, with her dog,( I think it is a lab ). She has dark hair and she works every day cleaning up garbage along O grady. ‘Thank You’ for your energy and time, It does make a difference. It is folks like this that makes a PG spring easier to look at. Thanks again.
I was at UNBC yesterday to do a bit of a tour for visitors.
There was so much gravel on the parking lots that I had to explain that there is pavement underneath, that it is not a gravel parking lot. That is what it looked like.
I’m taking the kids to the neighbourhood clean up today. It’s the right thing to do and I’d rather get the neighbourhood cleaned up than wait around for someone else to do it never. I guess we’re going to take the high road. But I will do it with a chip on my shoulder because I know that nearly every scrap of garbage on the ground in this area (University Heights) is the result of home construction. Some of the sites on my street are just disgusting. Some are tidy so I know it’s possible.
So these people just leave their trash outside to blow away in the wind, saving their own time and money and then I pick it up for free? I feel like billing them. Those Timmies cups right next to your job site guys? Doubtful that any of us residents dropped those there. And the thing that is really bonkers about it is that they want to sell these houses. Maybe it’s just me, but if I was driving around the neighbourhood as a prospective buyer, I’d likely avoid the places that looked like garbage-filled chaos. Just a tip in case any of you happen to be reading this…
metalman: Those also who can’t keep their garbage (coffee cups, slurpee cups and cigarette packages) with them to dispose of them in a garbage can.
We are all done now and I can’t believe the stuff we found – all of it construction garbage. Old roof tar cans, a broken ladder, pieces of siding, pieces of flooring, chunks of tile. It was fun explaining to my 4 year old why we had to be the ones to pick it up.
