Lights Out and Lock the Doors at Old Detachment
Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George RCMP Detachment building on Brunswick Street is now, officially, closed.
The last of the week long move saw some “in custody guests” of the RCMP moved to their new quarters at the new Detachment building on Victoria Street just before 5 this evening.
The new detachment will open its doors to the public tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. The new detachment on Victoria Street will also be home to Community Policing which has vacated it’s former location at 6th and Brunswick.
What will become of the old detachment building is not clear, although it will play a role in the 2015 Winter Games. In a story 250News published last fall, the head of Communications for the Winter Games, Mike Davis, was saying it will be used, but the exact role had not yet been finalized.
Suggested uses include:
- The Games Management Operations Centre, the area for service departments including transportation, security and environmental issues.
- The Mission Centre used by the mission staff sent by each province and territory competing at the games.
- The Volunteer Centre as the main hub for the 4500 volunteers working at the games as well as processing, registration and accreditation
The building will need some upgrades, afterall, that's one of the reasons why the new facility was built. But the City has made it clear, it will not be picking up the tab for any upgrades or improvements to the old building.

Who in the City made it clear that they would not be picking up the tab for any upgrades or improvements to the old building.????
Who in the City think they have the authority to make such a decision. If Council decides that there will be upgrades and improvements, then that’s what will happen.
If the City runs true to form, they will sell the property presently housing studio 2880. They will then move 2880 to the old police station, and they will use part of the money from the sale of the property on 15th avenue to offset the cost of improvements.
That’s just a possible scenario, however the alternative is to leave the building empty, or sell it. Not sure why anyone would want to buy it. Especially after the City is on record saying that it is in abhorrent condition. (even though it isn’t)
No of the city runs to true form.. They will buy more useless land, come up with more stupid fees or taxes.. Let the roads continue to deteriorate etc
Spend a lot of time in the old cop shop did you, Palopu? There is only a few ways to get inside it; either you’re a cop, support staff, or you’re a criminal. Which is it? Tell us how you have come to the conclusion that the building isn’t in abhorrent condition.
Or your a citizen and walk in the door…lol
The city owns it, they should take care of it. Do they too have this throw away mentality?
Ha, ha, I shouldn’t have asked.
If 2880 moves in where is the parking?
“But the City has made it clear, it will not be picking up the tab for any upgrades or improvements to the old building.”
The City has done a poor job of maintaining this building until now, no sense starting with any expensive repairs now.
Of course, if there are mould or asbestos issues, they would be wise to address those before opening the building up to the public, as in allowing 2015 Winter Games related use.
metalman.
“Tell us how you have come to the conclusion that the building isn’t in abhorrent condition.”
Simple, it has not been condemned. Compared to Studio 2880, it is in pretty good shape. It was crowded. The word is “dated”. The word is “tired”.
Want to see another dated and tired City building? Visit the downtown pool.
Want to visit a dated and tired private building? …. Try the Days Inn. So they will not be tearing that down but refurbishing it under a new banner. And it is a wood building to boot.
“If 2880 moves in where is the parking?”
Since when has the City ever worried about parking – Civic Centre, Pool, Library, Two Rivers Gallery, Coliseum …. put on an event in several of them together and you are walkin’.
I doubt that anyone is going to move 2880 anywhere soon.
I thought it was going to be torn down and the street closed to make more room for that hotel if they ever finish it!
Hey got some great news for you people up in George. The City of Surrey are building a new city hall for 97 million. Must be some cop shop that cost 42 million.
cheers
How about turning it into a homeless shelter? Homeless don’t need parking except for their shopping carts. Should be room for those inside a previously secure building.
It would make a fine grow operation building for a secure medicinal marijuana company. They could even add on a few floors to the top for green houses. Mold in the building won’t be so much of an issue, and with a secure entrance the product could be shipped out with minimal security issues. Being downtown and close to the police shop would make intervention by gangs a high risk proposition. The city could pass a bi-law allowing for municipal taxation of the product and transition away from taxing home owners for policing issues. Maybe even have some of the RCMP members themselves directors of the start up company. Harpers new rules on medicinal marijuana are designed for this sort of scenario.
Gus, ask yourself:
Who has the power to condem buildings?
Who do they work for?
Who owns the building?
And I happen to know that if you stand on the main floor and look straight up along the wall – you can see blue sky 2 floors up – and there are no windows on that wall.
