West Jet’s New P.G. – Calgary Run A Win Win For Everyone

Monday, April 28, 2014 @ 3:45 AM

Today will see the first flight for West Jet from Prince George to Calgary. Now it may not seem like much in the big picture, but each time we carve out some new territory to reach by air from Prince George, it opens up yet more opportunities to reach a destination.

The new flight will make it  easierin fact much easierto reach for example Halifax cutting 5 or 6 hours off the trip. More simply put, going east in Canada will be no only faster, but easier.

Regardless of how you feel about the expansion of the airport runway with the hopes that we might attract some big jets as a refueling  stop, this new travel route for West Jet is for real.

There is however yet a further advantage, Calgary is the main base for West Jet , it is headquartered there and so many of the flights that originate, like the new, New York flight can easily be accessed from their base.

Hopefully down the road if we are able to make this  link viable, perhaps a new flight from  Prince George to a sunny destination can be added.

So let's work together, it is good for the community, good for the travel and good for West Jet  and that is a winning combination.

I'm Meisner and that's one man's opinion.

PWA tried it CPA tried it and where are they now? Those two airlines used to have Edmonton runs too. Not saying it isn’t going to work but in order for it to work people need to use it. Those two airlines used to have a PG Kamloops and a PG Kelowna run too. So the territory isn’t new!

Did Ben actually write this article? I find it hard to believe if he did. It’s a disjointed mess, grammatically speaking.

We have had flights from Prince George to Calgary before and they were discontinued. The last was the Air Canada flights.

Over all I prefer West Jet, however as I pointed out in a previous post, I believe this service is being provided because the Cdn Mountain Air flight to Calgary eats into West Jets revenue, and they are protecting their turf.

Well I’m a fan. We don’t fly to Calgary as much, but this route will definitely shorten our flights back east. It’s far superior to the poorly timed once a day thing Air Canada tried. Already booked a flight between here and Ottawa – only one stopover!

Like Ben said ,this Calgary direct flight
connects with WestJet’s main hub for flights.
With regards to CP Air & PWA they never had direct flight’s to Calgary.
They flew a circle route.
CP Air – PG-VAN-CAL-EDM-GP-FT.ST.John-PG.

PWA – PG- VAN-CAL-EDM-DC-PG

CMA is a feeder airline for Air Canada.

Lets not forget Calgary is also home to some of the LNG & Oil companies.

Who may building pipelines & processing plants. In our area sometime in the future,

What is economically viable today may not be tomorrow. Enjoy it while you can. If enough people take advantage of it, the service will stick around.

“So let’s work together, it is good for the community, good for the travel and good for West Jet and that is a winning combination.”

So Ben writes a positive article, with some reasonable cautions, and what does he get? Bunch of negative ninnies come out to respond.

Who cares why who did what? It is private enterprise. It is not being subsidized by $400,000 of our City tax dollars. so leave it alone already.

I used to fly the PW route from here north which started in Vancouver, went to PG, F.S.John, Ft. Nelson, Watson Lake, Whitehorse. Not only that, it was a 737. During those days there was an alternate route from Vancouver to PG to Grand Prairie (I forget whether it included Dawson Creek) and on to Edmonton. From there one could take direct flights to Ottawa as well as London, Frankfurt, etc.

That was only 40 years ago. Time flies as well as airplanes.

Things went downhill from there as far as I am concerned, other than that flights form here got cheaper over the years plus more plentiful.

Different times, different markets, different competitors.

What we are really not talking about is whether the total number of people flying in and out of PG will be affected. I do not think so.

More choice is what we are getting. As long as everyone can survive, that is fine. We may, however, find that for those flying to Vancouver, there will be less choice down the road.

sorry, Logical One, I should have checked for new posts before I posted. You got a better description. :-)

Here is an interesting one.

The Council for the District of Mission adopted an amendment to the Zoning Bylaw that prohibits the establishment of licensed Medical Marihuana Grow Operations licensed under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations. At the same time, Council adopted a Policy that states that the District of Mission will consider applications for Medical Marihuana Grow Operations on a case by case basis and only when certain criteria can be met.

I can see that heading to a possible legal battle. The City of Prince George lost what may be a similar case back in 1978.

Supreme Court of Canada
Prince George (City of) v. Payne, [1978] 1 S.C.R. 458
Date: 1977-05-17

Municipal corporations—Refusal of business licence (Adult Boutique)—Council not empowered to refuse licence on basis it seeks to protect community’s moral welfare—Municipal Act, R.S.B.C. 1960, c. 255, s. 455, as amended by 1964, c. 33, s. 35; 1968, c. 33, s. 122.

Unless you’re planning your grow up in Calgary gus, I’m not following you. :)

As for Westjet’s new flight to Calgary? I just so happen to need to get myself and my two kids to Calgary this summer so I looked at this direct flight. Leaves PG at 6:00 in the morning and leaves Calgary at 10:00 pm in the evening. Not really kid friendly so I guess it’s back to AC for me.

The 6am is great for travelling back east. We have two small children and we always take those flights because the choice is either that or get to our destination at midnight. The kids seems to adjust better to the early wake up. Flying to Calgary it might not be such a draw. We always just drive there though. And the times are great for business travellers. Probably hard to find one time a day that works for everyone.

Sorry axman …. had both windows open and posted to the wrong one as I was trying to get out of the door. :-)

This is great for PG. Now if PG could get a late night arrival from overseas like PG-Manila, or PG-Hong Kong… say arriving at 9pm for a connection to Calgary East then PG could start the makings of a true regional hub through connector traffic.

For a lot of the overseas airlines they have limited slots available to them in Vancouver and in order to expand they require other options where to land in BC.
