Prince George, B.C.- Tomorrow at noon, the flags will be raised at the new Prince George RCMP detachment on Victoria Street, but yesterday, there was a quiet ceremony at the old detachment facility on Brunswick.
Superintendent Eric Stubbs, Inspector Brad Anderson, Staff Sergeant Perry Smith and Detachment Chaplain, Brian Joyce closed the old detachment with the lowering of the Canadian flag.
Chaplain Joyce says when he was thinking about the decommissioning of the building, it was a passage from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament that came to mind “There is a time for everything, a time for everything. It is time to decommission this building, its time has come, it has served its purpose and it is time.”
(At right, Superintendent Stubbs lowers the flag)
With bowed heads, the four men shared a prayer that called for peace for a building that has seen its share of human drama and tragedy and a wish that all the good memories and positive feelings created over the years in the old detachment would transfer to the new facility just 5 blocks away.
"I think it’s important to recognize the hard work that has been done over the years in this building by RCMP members and our support workers from the City of Prince George” said Superintendent Eric Stubbs. “Just, day in, day out, the employees in this building worked hard. This is a busy detachment, a busy town to police and its very challenging, and the people who use this building, we wore it out, that’s how hard we worked, we just wore it out.”

Please, wear out the next one. Thanks for doing a good job.
They said a prayer for a building? What the?
What is going to happen to the old building? Is any use planned for it?
What’s going to happen to the old cop shop.
1) Move Studio 2880 into it, sell the 15th avenue site and recoup money.
2) Open up a Timmies
Wow, they worked so hard they wore the building out.lol. Well, firstly they were well paid for their work.
They didnt work very hard cleaning, look down by there feet. Just saying.
“He spoke” I ‘ll tell you they wore out the old police station, and definitely out grew it, they had betwen 6 and 8 offiers sharing one desk space.
What the two camera/publicity hogs Bond and Green weren’t there????…. opportunity lost for them I guess…
Wouldn’t it be more efficient to open a Timmies in the new detachment?
RCMP is a 24/7/365 work schedule.
On a weekly basis, that means that a 37.5 hour work week requires 4.5 shifts.
In addition, some officers are on the road for half or more of the time. Also most have 3 and more weeks of vacation which I would think would be staggered as well.
6 to 8 per work station may be a bit on the high side. I wonder how many per workstation the new building is designed for, knowing that at the moment it would be a low number per workstation, but that when the city reaches 160,000 in 2093, the number may almost double. So, 2 now and 4 then.
Imagine what a building that is 60 years old will look like in PG?
Wonder what the cost will be to wash the glass every 10 years …. ;-)
Still waiting for those living walls to be put in. It looks like the plants in there will get more access to light than those working at their workstations. All of the glass on the front is for the benefit of the atrium. While there appear to be some internal window looking out onto that space, I do not think that the workstations have as much access to daylight as the district office has or other less pretentious RCMP buildings across the province and country.
With the advent of this new cop shop, a ban on cobblestone or bricked walkways in the neighbourhood for obvious reasons would be a good idea in case of civil unrest down the road for any reason. Boom times for glaziers some time down the road. Maybe.
Maybe All West Glass knows what you are thinking, Harbinger. :-)
Many a true word spoken in jest. Eh, gus?
Oneman…too funny ! What is the old saying about moss growing under your feet and being busy ? Appears to be moss growing under their feet !!
