In March, the Bank of England published an excellent, very clear paper titled Money Creation In The Modern Economy.
It explains how, contrary to what people might think, a bank doesn’t make loans, by taking the deposits of a client and then lending those deposits out. Instead, the bank creates money out of thin air. If you want to get a mortgage for a house, and the bank deems you to be credit-worthy, it puts the amount of money you need into an account. That money in your account becomes a liability for the bank. And the mortgage it now owns is an asset of the bank.

“Give me control of a nations money and I care who not makes the laws..” – Rothschild..
how come the street sweepers are all over the place ??? even doing my street twice !!! they only came once all winter to plough, but man!!! not with these,it doesn’t make sense
Charles, could social credit make more sense, then picking winners and loosers to inflate the money supply based on usury?
In the extreme the debt created currency devalues the value of labor currency. Possibly social credit could be a balance to debt created currency? Tighten up the lending requirements for reserves, and then inflate the money supply with social credit payable to citizens and government… eliminating the need for social assistance and taxes.
A reverse of the flat tax for the rich at maybe 5% of the money supply each year?
Thanks charles for another Friday morning ray of cloud. I would bet that in your house every glass, cup, mug, tumbler, stein, goblet, chalice, tankard or teacup is at best half full:) Burst the bubble of enthusiasm with the realization that there is 20% of the work week left to go before the weekend truly arrives.
On the monetary front, if the banks had to have a buck in the vault for every one they loaned out almost everything would grind to a halt in no time. By law they must keep a certain percentage of liquid assets to cover any bad loans and hopefully the new laws will avoid another sub-prime mess. To me a far greater threat is some of the lesser known Wall Street trading tools like derivatives trading, credit default swaps, CDO’s and black pools.
alex1212: If only some of us were so lucky! Yeah, I know they started a month after they could have and their sweeping is contributing to the dust problem. Not their sweeping per se but the film of fines they leave behind. Can’t for the life of me figure out why they don’t flush after sweeping. It would drastically cut down on the dust problem.
One semi trailer tank with a pump and nozzles would easily keep up with a couple of sweepers.
One thing missing lately from FFFA are some wacked rambling based on a narrow spectrum of internet conspiracy theories. Perhaps the tin foil top hat has been tucked away till later this fall when a certain event takes place in towns and cities across the province. I guess only time will tell.
Ah, good morning everyone! I hope today is as beautiful as yesterday was. Wasn’t that something?
Have a safe fun weekend everyone!
While I am happy that the Government is placing a moratorium on the Temporary Worker Programme and having a good look at it, I don’t think it is the present TFWs who should have to pay the price for it. They have contracts in place with their employers. The employers who have abused the system should be the ones who should have to honour these contracts or pay them out, and then have their fingers slapped. Also part of the blame has to be placed on the ones who continually approved the LMOs without really looking at them seriously.
Concerning Rob Ford, sorry, but I don’t believe he is sincere this time either. He’s making another show instead of really dealing with the issues. Just one month? Ah, no sorry, I don’t believe it.
Mike Morris, are you out there? What have you been up to?

how come the street sweepers are all over the place ??? even doing my street twice !!! they only came once all winter to plough, but man!!! not with these,it doesn’t make sense.
Alex1212 I’ve taken he time to watch them and actually call streets and done a bit of homework on that. Rather than just complain and wonder why they do something I don’t understand I made some calls.
I was told that the city is broken down into zones. There are also day shift zones and night shift zones. A sweeper will go through a ‘zone’ and pull the gravel away from the curb. Then the loader with a big attachment on the front, they call it the loader-broom, goes right behind and picks all that up. You’ll see that loader then dump its sweepings into a dump truck.
A sweeper then follows the loader-broom to pick up the bits left behind.
This loader-broom is ONLY intended to pick up the bulk gravel and they will go through the entire city working this way. Then as you’ve stated, you’ll see a few days later a group of city street sweepers go by… and you’re thinking they are doing it AGAIN!! Not true. They are sweeping making their final clean up.
If people aren’t sure how the city (to whom we pay our taxes), does something; rather than or as well as complain on this site; just call city hall or the streets division and they’ll give you the run down on how or why they do things a certain way. They were very friendly and I got the answers I was looking for.
Before the last election Mike Morris was going door to door looking fo votes , I had a few questions for Mr.Mike like just what did the liberals intend to do for the poor and seniors , well he told me he was looking into it my guess is he is still looking and thats why you can’t find him . Just another fibral .All talk no action .
where are the other jerks like John Furlong and King Gordo ?
The following statistics are from the latest credit market summary data table released by Statistics Canada:
On December 31, 2013 the total debt outstanding in Canada (bottom line of the data table) was $5.55 Trillion. For the calendar year 2013 the total debt outstanding in Canada increased by $312 BILLION.

I think the following song by the Irish Rovers says it all.

I was wondering if the city hall is going to clean all the gravel off foothills Blvd.
The amount of gravel that’s on the lawn is nuts, and as soon as they start cutting that grass, rocks are going to be flying everywhere and it will cause damage to vehicles and house windows.
It took a serious amount of research on my part, however, I believe I have finally identified the exact moment the Conservative Party of Canada was created! I am so excited to be able to share this very special moment with you⦠and youâre welcome ;-)

For extra marks, can anyone identify which of the three characters most likely came up with the Conservative Party of Canada idea? *Hint: Look at the three characters carefully, you will need to utilize some observation skills and possess a basic ability to interpret body language.
Have a good Friday and weekend everyone!
Hey sparrow. I liked Ezra Levant’s comments on TFW’s in the service industry. They pay little or no taxes in Canada and they reduce the amount of affordable housing available for all low wage earners.
There is indeed an enormous labor pool available in Canada for the service industry. They are all rich kids taking useless arts degrees at the taxpayer funded adult day care centers such as UNBC.
Cutting the lawn with rocks on it sounds like a brilliant idea!
The poor murderer who died an ugly death on the execution table! I’m still trying to figure out how dying when your supposed to be executed is a botched execution! Sounds like it was a success to me!
Is the rumour true that Dallas Thompson is in the running to be the new GM of the Vancouver Canucks or was it just a bad dream.
@contractor
The reality is you cant generalize across Canada like that. In BC I would suggest there is almost no need for temporary foreign workers in the service industry, but in Alberta and Sask eliminating the program will actually make it even harder to receive several basic services like Tim Hortons.
NoWay: I wonder why they don’t just give them a huge shot of morphine or heroin and overdose them? Or why not put them in a chamber and remove the air? They could have a gun pointed at their head while they are strapped to the gurney and have a computer determine when to fire the shot. It seems that they make the job so difficult for themselves.
@Resident … stop eating cheese before bedtime !!!!
V.
Born in BC:
Think about it, there are probably a lot of seniors who would be able to do those jobs too. Short shifts, inside work, a pace to keep them active. They just need to pay more in wages to make that happen. Then you probably wouldn’t have any shortage of workers lining up for the jobs.
A lot of them have taken the easy way out in trying to get the most for the least.
The Home Show was a huge waste of time. They should change the name to “The Hot Tub Show”. Popcorn, Pasta and Hot tubs. Starting a major renovation and wanted to see whats new in kitchen stuff, decorating, flooring etc. Nothing there. 1 flooring outfit, 1 small decorating place. No kitchen outfits. I told my kid that I could go and pick him up at his friends house in about 2 to 3 hours allowing for time to look at stuff needed for the renos. I was in and out in 20 minutes.
The problem is not the foreign workers. The problem is the government and it desire to fine tune the rules and guidelines on hiring. if all the workers were paid the same amount with any government incentives, things would work itself out.
For example, if you owned a small business where you need fifteen minimum wage workers, and there was an incentive from the government to hire, blonde haired blue eye people. The government willing to subsidize by up to 15% of their wages. Who are you going to hire!!!!, of course the Swedish bikini team.
TFW and workers at Tumbler Ridge – strange that TFWs are still working and Canadians are laidoff – SHAME!!.
As for severance package for the laid off employees , all exempt staff and managers are getting it now but for them it could be up to 2 years.
Maybe part of the problem is that Canadians are reluctant to move for work.
http://www.surreyleader.com/national/257497551.html
So much for the ‘mobile workforce’?
So what is an employer to do when locals do not want the job?.
Getting hot over at the Ukraine.
I too found the Home Show very disappointing as well. Was interesting in building materials etc. for carport/garages not hot tubs.
I stopped going to the Home Show years ago. Nothing like paying good money to walk through a bunch of live infomercials.
Last time I went to the “Home Show” was when I found out that aluminum deck railing was $33 a foot. Looking back I can see why they didn’t quote me a price in this metric precious country. A metre is 39 inches. Over 3 feet. Gas in litres instead of gallons. Deck railing in feet. Whatever works, eh?
Hey Harbinger, the next thing you know the govt will switch us over to metric time to allow business to rape us over labor times.
From Charles: “-25% regret buying a house”
Were the people polled asked why the regret?
We own our home. It was a mainly good decision, but sometimes, if you asked me, I would say I regret buying it. This is not a financial regret though. Some days, I hate my neighbor. Now and then a problem arises, and I regret that I can’t call a landlord to deal with it. (toilet plugged, pipe broke, etc.) When it snows heavily, I miss my condo. When caterpillars are dropping into my hair while I mow the lawn, I hate my property.
But overall, I love my house, yard, and City. With few regrets. I bet I’m not alone.
1988 Ford F-150 tie rod is both metric AND the understandable scale.
“Maybe part of the problem is that Canadians are reluctant to move for work”
==================================
The article you posted a link to is missing a HUGE piece of information and that is whether the people in the survey are currently employed and comfortable in their current environment. If they are, why the heck would they want to move or be expected to move?
I see this as a numbers game, plain and simple. We know that we have an aging population in Canada and we know that we have an economy to maintain. We should be smart enough to figure out that our aging population won’t be able to maintain the economy that we have, especially if we continue to focus so much on resource extraction.
I suggest we get creative. Instead of giving incentives to business to employ foreign workers, why not give them incentives to employ Canadian workers? I say let them write-off 115% of the wage costs (I just use 115% as an example, it could be anything more than 100%) for any Canadian they employ, whereas they only get to write-off 100% (possibly less than 100% for sectors where there is a large pool of available Canadian workers?) for non-residents.
Yes it would deliberately encourage business to employ Canadians first, but what’s wrong with that? Heck, maybe savvy businesses would use some of those tax savings to offer increased wages to their people so that they could attract more people to work for them.
I’ve no real problem with the idea of TFW, but lets get the abuse out of the system, penalize employers who do abuse it and let’s do our best to encourage investment in Canadian workers first.
Any Parents notice there is “Teacher Job Action” happening at your Childs School ?
It’s called “Job Action”
but I think it’s a Farce.
“Maybe part of the problem is that Canadians are reluctant to move for work.”
Sort of assumes that people should pull up stakes and move just for a job.
There has to be a better way than to uproot families where the norm is that both parents work, kids go to school, and even grandparents are close at hand to help with taking care of younger children.
Generally speaking, we are not nomads. People in many other countries are even less so.
That is just one of many examples.
I think that there is another type of nomad, those are the ones with a mobile job that takes them all over the province, Canada, and even the world as part of the lifestyle they created for themselves almost from the start.
My father-in-law was one of those. Worked for DND as an electrical engineer and travelled all over Canada for half the time. There was a routine to it and everyone adjusted. Another in-law today is an officer on a merchant vessel, similar to a Captain Phillips situation.
The neat thing about both of those, one can often live anywhere on the routine travel network.
Those too are mobile jobs and I think there are more of those today than there were 50 and most certainly 100 years ago.
There is nothing wrong with workers from a foreign country. We are a country that grew up on foreign workers. We would not have the population we have today if we did not have workers coming here from foreign lands.
It is the TFW I have a problem with. I would have no problem at all with PFW (permanent foreign workers) who would eventually become PCW (Permanent Canadian Workers).
Here is an interesting story about an investment by Microsoft in Vancouver.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/microsoft-canada-excellence-centre-to-bring-jobs-to-vancouver-1.2629746?cmp=rss
Some points from the article:
– “When we made a decision to direct the expansion, it’s really about how could we can find a place that would attract the best and brightest minds around the world that would want to come to a beautiful city like Vancouver.”
– Ian McKay with the Vancouver Economic Commission says successful start-ups in the city have helped created a technology hub that the biggest players in the industry can no longer ignore.
– “Now we’re attracting the attention of the big firms who recognize that the ecosystem here, the technology sector here, the talent , the skills, the incentives of just doing business in the city are too much for them to ignore.”
I thought this was a pretty good example of an industry operating within BC, that for the most part, is virtually unrepresented in the “250”. Why is that? More importantly, how can we change that?
I love acronyms …. just more jargon to keep people out of the conversation.
Tim Horton is a basic service? LOL
For a lot of public service employees it would not matter if their work was tracked on imperial or metric scale as zero is zero no matter how it is measured!
Thought I would mention this as it’s relatively new , this bad crash involved a local Prince George man whose name is mentioned in the following story.
………………

Had to go to emergency at the Hospital yesterday ,I would like to thank all the employees for the great service. Its contract time and one of the issues is improved health and safety provisions , that is not just for them that is for us as well. Our emergency ward is used to house people with mental health issues and people that should be in detox, as there is not where else to put them , I would guess a shortage of beds in the proper places. The staff earn every penny they make, you have to walk the walk to know what I am talking about.
TFW program has been made into a scam for the likes of Macdonald’s, Tim Hortens, Wendy’s, A&W and more. The corporation ensures the franchise owner is under their control and must buy from them and continue to suck more from the franchise owner and worry less about rules or ethics. The Corporation must feed the investors and 10% return is nice but 25% better. MacDonald’s makes billions but can’t bring themselves to pay a decent wage or provide hours of work reasonable. I agree there are seniors that would love some of these jobs and their are students willing to work but with split 2 or 3 hour shifts if you have to travel could cost you more to work then you make. Its a said state we are in and buts a black mark on Canada. These workers would be happy to move to Canada but corperations see no benefit and our Government is playing along.
Vancouver gets 400 high tech jobs from Microsoft and PG gets to twin with a city in China. Seems just about fair. IPG at its finest.
On this reluctant to move for work, a simple change to the income tax act would help. If your employer sends you out of province to work, they can provide you with tax free travel, tax free camp costs/hotels/meals. If you decide you don’t want to move your family, but have to work elsewhere, you pay all those costs with after tax dollars. Change the act to allow a deduction for travel to out of area work, and living costs at the new location, and some people would be willing to work elsewhere. No one wants to move their kids to Ft McMurray – or most of Northern Alberta for that matter.
Seamut: “So what is an employer to do when locals do not want the job?”
People seem reluctant to answer that question. Like gus said, TFW is not a new thing, despite what the media leads usto believe.
Generally speaking, we are not nomads. People in many other countries are even less so.
========================================
In the forty some years that I worked my family and I moved to where the work was. We didn’t sit by the fire and expect work to come to us. In my time I met a lot of “nomads”.
Cheers
In the forty or some years that I worked my family and I moved to where the lifestyle suited us. We did not site by the fire and expect work to come to us. We learned new skills to suit the jobs available in community we chose. In my time I met a lot of versatile people.
I came to PG for work. Was a 5 year plan. I’m into year 29 now.
I came to PG for a change of lifestyle away from a big city. I came to stay, unlike many others. I saw it as a city which fit my lifestyle and fit my interest in a city that was growing where many new things were actually the first of rather than just another one of the same. There were no lines to get into nightclubs, movies, etc. My jobs to me into Vancouver on average every month so I could get my big city fix.
The main thing that changed is that the city stopped growing less than 10 years after I came. On top of that, it lost some of the places to hang out at. Even the ski hills got stuck in the 1970s.
While I thought I would retire here, the lack of vision by city leaders and the sense that tomorrow will be the same as today because most people seem stuck in the same rut, I am starting to see that if I want a more pleasant lifestyle, I may have to move.
“Vancouver gets 400 high tech jobs from Microsoft and PG gets to twin with a city in China. Seems just about fair. IPG at its finest.”
I guess different people get different interpretations from the same article.
Vancouver is a major international city. In fact, I would say, because of its location both related to the world as well as local attractions, it is the most desirable city in Canada from a lifestyle and international access point of view.
Of course, from Microsoft’s point of view, it is part of the Cascadia linear urban settlement from Portland, OR to Vancouver, BC with Seattle at the center.
Talk about lifestyle and jobs linked together. That is the ultimate.
PG has a long way to go. It is the community that sets the pace. The City does not understand that, nor does IPG or NDIT, nor does the Chamber of Commerce. Judging from many of the posters on here, most of the people living here do not understand that either.
While PG might have “True Grit”, Vancouver has an ambience.
For me, PG is where the work is. It has been for a long time. But if that changed, I would move in an instant.
“While PG might have “True Grit”, Vancouver has an ambience.”
Well said! Looking out my window I see that year after year the city allows things to deteriorate more and more. The curbs get chewed up until there is nothing left, but nobody has ever come and fixed something. The one and only sidewalk is narrow, cracking and potholed, the street signs lean more after every winter – pushed over by the front end loaders, power poles are leaning too, the sand has not been swept up yet…quite an ambience, that`s for sure!
gus: “PG has a long way to go. It is the community that sets the pace. The City does not understand that, nor does IPG or NDIT, nor does the Chamber of Commerce. Judging from many of the posters on here, most of the people living here do not understand that either.”
I think you just have trouble dealing with those who might have a different perspective than your own. Remember, others have different experiences than you might.
Because my significant other goes where the work is (camp), we can live pretty much anywhere in Canada. We choose here. We like Prince George, it has tonnes of outdoor recreational activities. We can afford a nicer home here than in many of the other communities we look at. We have 4 distinctive seasons, which I would miss if we left. When we want big city shopping or entertainment, we go to a big city, but I am always relieved to get back “home”. It is starting to look broken, but it is ours, and we love it.
Bitter, I wholeheartedly agree, all the staff at the hospital get my utmost respect.
What don’t get my respect are the bureaucrats at NIH for their shortsighted and plain stupidity in not increasing parking. Love to see their building torn down and made in to parking for the hospital.
“I think you just have trouble dealing with those who might have a different perspective than your own”
I gauge this city by comparing it to other cities of its kind, not by what others here think of this city.
Sort of like when I buy something. I gauge what I buy by comparing it to the standard of similar things. I do not gauge what I buy by what others buy.
So, I do not have trouble at all of what others think about this city. Like any normal person, I gauge it by my opinions. I have one life to live and it will be mine, not that of others.
I learned that at an early age. :-)
For some people the requirement of having a meaningful well-paying job meshes nicely with the desire to live in a clean, attractive and well kept city which provides the physical harmonious surroundings for the enjoyment of the things that people do when they are not at work or retired.
It is not an unreasonable expectation to get some positive returns on the taxes we pay and the volunteer work we do for the betterment of society, for instance.
Those who say that the only thing that keeps them here is the work and that they would leave as soon as there is no work seem to be not very enchanted with the overall ambience either, thereby agreeing with the assessment of Gus!
Where would they go to if every town was as gritty as Prince George?
Ambiance in Vancouver, where? Oh right traffic and shoulder to shoulder people.
All the ‘ambiance’ in the world doesn’t mean a thing if you can’t afford to live there.
Put it this way, if money were no object, where would you live? How many people would say ‘PG’? My guess is, not many.
Since Harper depends on the Armed forces and the RCMP for his security and safety it is not very smart to screw them over on pay and benifits. These folks maybe might think twice about putting themselves in harm’s way protecting him.
I don’t recall if it was posted on 250news or not, but here’s the link for the information website for the Proposed Area Based Forest Tenures, open for feedback until May 30th:
http://engage.gov.bc.ca/foresttenures/
If money was no option, I would have a 100acre park like home on the Nechako River and every day would be spent either on the river or our riding the back country with friends. And of course I would travel like a nomad, but always come back to home. If money was no option.
Move to another country with less expensive living costs and money will be less of a concern.
Consider Ecuador – mountain plateau in the Andes or pacific ocean seashores.

“All the ‘ambiance’ in the world doesn’t mean a thing if you can’t afford to live there”
==================================
You say that as though ambiance can only be found in places that are unaffordable . . .
If money were no object, I’m not sure where I would live to be honest. Heck, I’d probably have a few places to stay at certain times of the year and spend the rest of the time travelling around the world taking in different sights, cultures and experiences.
If money were no object, I could definitely see having an apartment or condo in downtown Vancouver as “home base”. It really is a great spot and everything I would ever need would be within easy walking distance.
I’d probably also have a house in Whitehorse where I could spend summers hiking, fishing and exploring Yukon. I absolutely love that place.
Would I have a place in PG? Yes, if my family and friends were still there. If that wasn’t the case, probably not. I’ve travelled enough to know that there are better places to be situated if fishing is my priority. There are better places if climate is my priority. There are better places if larger city amenities are my priority. There are better places if lack of isolation is a priority. There are better places if all of those are priorities. I think I’ve actually found a city that is better for all of those things wrapped up into one place.
Will I stay here forever? Who knows. Times change, people change and priorities change. People need to do what makes them happy. I think people should chase happiness, not jobs.
Cuenca Ecuador. Apartment Condo. Concrete building. Built 2001.
US$ 155,000, fully furnished, 1,830 SF
2 bedroom, 3 bathrooms
Look at the pictures. Try to get that in downtown large urban Canada for less than $1million. In Vancouver or Toronto …. maybe $5 million and up depending on location.

Here is a report on the cost of living.
I know someone from PG who has been living in Ecuador for a few years.

I have seen just about enough dust….when will they clean the streets…..they are REALLY LATE this year!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sunnyday1 – it is only the begining of May, maybe pull out a calendar and a history book of when it was done in the past and you may realize they are not really late this year
JB:”Put it this way, if money were no object, where would you live? How many people would say ‘PG’? My guess is, not many.”
Not many, for sure! But that doesn’t mean that the situation can’t be improved and persuade many more to stay.
We have not had ice or snow by the curbs for a long time, where I live. I don’t care when they did it last year…this year they have had plenty of time to do it and they are not.
Very sad to hear Bon Voyage Sports is closing, a real good store. Too bad folks abandoned it to go elsewhere, but that’s competition in this day and age. Best wishes to the owners.
sunny day 1
The city sweepers and related equipment were cleaning all the roads in the graveyard two Fridays ago. Ya think they have some advanced knowledge of an upcoming zombie apocalypse and don’t want too much dust kicked up when the chit hits the fan.
All this talk about living elsewhere and what a gritty, dirty, dusty, stinky, broken city we live in. Are you listening Mayor and Councilors? It keeps getting worse every year. Our main blvds. are full of weeds and garbage, everything is so rundown. Where do you even begin to get this city back on track? The City is not doing their job and IPG is a damn joke.
PG is a dump. To think otherwise it’s delusional.
Went into Bon Voyage sports on a sunday, on my way out to the coast, to have the line replaced on one of my salmon reels. “Sorry we don’t do that on Sundays”. One of many, poor service instances I have experienced in that store. No loss!

You idiots that insist upon driving in the dust along the edge of the road should be lined up along the edge of that road. :-)
The fishing reel tale was first posted what about two years ago….get over it. Was that the same time you cried about a bit of moisture in the free air?
It wasn’t always a dump. Who is to blame? I was born here, and remember an entirely different atmosphere and attitude. The downtown streets were watered and swept regularly, green spaces were actually green and residents really took pride in this city. Here I am 66 years later and looking around at the filth, reading the constant complaints on this site (which are all true)and I too would rather live elsewhere. However, this is where my children and grandchildren are so this is where I’ll stay.
