Prince George Roads Headed For Rehab
Prince George, B.C. – Perhaps you’ve noticed clusters of orange cones surrounding small areas on city streets over the past few weeks.
Michael Kellett, the City’s “Corporate Communications Specialist”, explains that “what they’re doing there in terms of City work is preparing those areas for road rehab. Because what’s going on is the hot mix asphalt is getting ready. It’s not ready yet but it will be ready and the actual rehab with the asphalt will begin just after May long weekend.”
Kellett says between now and then crews will start filling potholes with the hot mix “to make sure the hot asphalt consistency is correct. You’ll see people out there who are doing road work. It isn’t actually the road work but they have to prep certain areas first before they go in with the asphalt. It is part of the road rehab, but it has to have another foot fall” before the hot asphalt shows up. Pittman Asphalt has the contract to supply the City with hot asphalt this year.
The total road rehab budget for 2014 is $9.8 million, $2.7 million of which comes from the federal Community Works Fund. The City has 29 road re-surfacing projects lined up for this year.

I sure hope they start painting lines soon too. The new “environmentally safe” paint, I think, needs a few tweaks before it stands up to wear-ability.
What is the point of using a paint once a year, that only remains visible for three or four months? Is imprinting the lines the answer? Or somehow dying the asphalt as its laid the answer? I don’t know that either but I think they should have come up with an ‘as good’ or better paint before switching to one that doesn’t work.
so they fill the pot holes w/this hot mix to see if the consistency is correct…our tax $$$ hard at work AGAIN. Do they have to reinvent the wheel every year???? this rehab business is a waste…just pave it properly, quite using “bandaids”….pathetic.

The best asphalt in the world will not fix the underlying issue; that being the road beds that weren’t designed for the traffic they receive.
If $5 Million comes from our road rehab tax levy, and $2.7 Million from the Federal Community Works Fund (Gas Tax) where does the balance $2.1 Million come from.
Could it be from last years Gas Tax Fund money that was not spent???
Better do some warranty work on south Ospika as it is starting to break up and will need major work if it isn’t maintained.
What they call road rehab in this city seems more like lipstick and mascara to me! I see roads that were skim coated within the last 5 +/- years and already have gaping potholes going – for example lovely one on Domano going north before the turn-off to Save-on. How can that road fail so soon after being resurfaced? I know exactly why – I watched them toss a couple of shovelfuls of gravel in the gaping pothole before applying the top coat – as Axeman said – road beds are not having the underlying issues worked on.
Our roads will continue to fail until we do something more than peel and skim coat broken roadbeds.
Yes, about time they painted the lines…people just moving here don’t know where to go….things are just too slow here….like cleaning the DIRTY roads!!!!
Who ever is new in town get use to it, we run on a small town mentality no thought of anything what so ever and then we do things half assed to get it done. Welcome to P.G.
If you are not on inhaulers you soon will be.
Have any of you travelled up or down the pg hill? I’ve been on logging roads thats smoother.

PG hill? been here 40 years and I’ve never heard of it. Where is it located?
As for that hill on Domano it appeared roughly 8 months after it was paved and it’s not been fixed decently since.
Gaal did a media release to another rag April 29/14 and quotes:
“When the city amalgamated in the late 1970s, it inherited roads that weren’t constructed to the same standards, said Gaal.”
Huh? The majority of roads attained from amalgamation have not even been scheduled to be fixed.
The more Gaal speaks the less he makes sense – again. He got himself in hot water last time over the snow removal. Time to go!
Is the city still catching up from 40 years ago and none of the $6 million given to the city from the province was not used for any roads?
No wonder areas want to get out of the city again. Sheesh!
billyinpg…sorry , i thought they called the hill that goes south of the casino heading south was called PG hill ..anyways what do i know, i’m new here. Anyways , some logging roads are smoother.
greatwhite10. You could be right I am not sure that the hill going South on 97 even has a name, so it could be called PG Hill.
I couldn’t agree more regarding the line painting.
I have seen many drivers driving right in the middle of two lanes, because they are oblivious.
And yes, let’s get rid of the environmentally friendly paint that lasts a couple of months. It is a failed experiment in the name of political correctness with dubious benefits.
How many accidents have been caused because of the lack of lines on the road, and people drifting out of their lanes? When it’s dark and raining, the problem is magnified.
“Yes its the road beds. We will dig every major route down 1 meter and rebuild them properly. Ps – your taxes will triple to cover the 500 million this will cost”
Do I get elected this fall?
Back in the day the PG Hill was the correctional institute (jail) that is on the lower part of Airport hill (hwy 16 e)
Now that the snow is gone we should consider making some roads one way. If we do this now it would give us time to get used it. This would work especially well for crescents. The reason I suggest this is because many of our roads are reduced to one lane in the winter and if everyone was moving in the same direction it would be somewhat safer.
Too add to that, all th hwys are is sh*@ shape with band aids all over them….
I surmise that the city has run out of “bump” warning signs. Just scrape up two or three inches of pavement up, mix with some used motor oil and re-apply. That oughta shut up the whiners for another year. Right, city hall? We don’t need our own stinkin’ asphalt plant. No matter where ya put it folks are gonna whine.
Too little too late. Sub-grades are damaged, will cost more to fix properly. Bend over to save a dollar, while the five dollar bills fly over your head. My mama always taught me, buy cheap…wear cheap..
palopu the missing money is the $2.5 million paid by the residents in Hart Highlands for their sewer upgrade that includes repaving the street… paid for not by the city but rather 100% by the homeowners on the effected streets and billed by the city. Good deal for the rest of the city when a street has to pay for its own paving. Thats how things are in PG when you live in places like the Hart.
Speaking of roads considering the minus temperatures and snowfall in many areas maybe removing snowtires May first should be changed to June first.
The hill going south on 97 is called Husky Hill as long as I can remember. The hill going east by the jail was always called Airport Hill.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend folks.
