Slide Isolates Residents in North Okanagan
Enderby, B.C. – Hundreds of people remain stranded in the north Okanagan following a landslide early Friday that sent mud and debris crashing down a creek 25 kilometres east of Enderby.
Both the Mabel Lake Road and a bridge crossing Cooke Creek were wiped out by the slide, stranding more than 200 people on the other side of the creek and leaving more than 700 customers without power. The Transportation Ministry is looking at spanning the creek with a Bailey bridge, but that can’t be done until the road has been re-opened, and that isn’t expected to occur until Monday at the earliest.
Fortunately nobody was injured when the mud and vegetation came down. However the Shuswap River is heavily clogged and the town of Enderby has moved its emergency operations centre into active mode to deal with any possible threats the slide may pose.
